Definition of Superbug

An informal term for a bacterium that has become resistant to antibiotics usually used to treat it, as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or any multiresistant bacterium.

Superbugs could kill 10 million people a YEAR

Drugs companies need up to £25billion to fight the growing superbugs crisis, a Government advisor warns today.

Some 41 new antibiotics are currently in development, but Mr O’Neill said most of these do not target the most urgent needs and will probably never see the light of day.

Designing smarter drugs to fight antibiotic resistance

Antibiotics (orange dots) face a number of potential obstacles on their way from the site of administration to their target within the infecting bacteria.

Approved antibiotics work by inhibiting a limited repertoire of bacterial targets, disrupting essential functions such as cell wall synthesis, protein production and DNA replication.
