In summary …..

We have evolving sources of healthcare information beyond HIPAA:

– social media is a powerful lens and sensor by which we can study changes in medical behavior of individuals

– We can study things like patients’ heart rate and smoking cessation using apps

Want to ensure we protect privacy, but don’t want to get in the way of treatment for patients or medical breakthroughs

HIPAA was very narrow at the time it was designed. Appropriate and sufficient at that time. But, today we’re collecting data from many more places, like sensors and devices that didn’t exist when HIPAA was established. We need to rethink that.
