ave you ever heard of a Rubens Tube? If not, then you are in for treat! Orig-

inally made by a German physicist names Heinrich Rubens, the rubens tube demon-strates acoustic standing waves inside of a tube. The Rubens tube is basically a big bunsen burner. Gas is fed through the tube and fom mul- tiple holes, and the flames shoot out. The catch here is that sound os-cillates. When the oscillating sound goes through the tube, some of the gas that gets fed through the tube is blocked off by the oscillating sound waves. The height of the flame varies with what frequency sound is blocking of the gas. The end result is a pyrotechnical show that resembles digital sound bars.

Building a home made Ru-ben’s tube is also easy. All it requires is basic materi-als from your local home improvement store. Mate-rials such as a metal tube, propane tank, a hose, tape, a device that will generate your sound, and a drill. Gas is fed through the hose on one side of the tube from your propane tank. The sound comes from the other side. Both sides are sealed with tape. After you drill the holes in your tube, all you have to do is feed the gas and light it. Initially the flames will be very low, do to insuf-ficient pressure being exert-ed through the tube. Thats all changed when you turn on your sound device. The sound waves with push the gass through parts where the sine wave oscilates the most.
