Energy can be harnessed from the sun and be transformed into hydrogen for later use without releasing a single toxin into our environment

Page 8: Evian Davies - Portfolio

The Kernow Karr is a hydrogen-powered vehicle that was entered into Shell’s European Eco-Marathon.The Shell Eco-Marathon is a competition that first started in 1939 as a friendly wager between two shell employees as to who could travel the farthest on the same amount of fuel. In the 75 years since, that small wager has blossomed into a global competition that invites all to compete. This event sparks great debate in the media about the future of energy and what our future means of transportation will be.

THE JOURNEY

Our team built a hydrogen-powered car. This fuel is targeted to become a replacement for petrol, a reason for this is the environmentally friendly waste product; water.

The project was undertaken by 3 Sustainable Product Designers; Elliot Beecham, Ben Whitfield and myself. Our role was to design and build the chassis, bodywork and overall layout of the vehicle. We collaborated heavily with Exeter Universities’ Renewable Energy students who worked on the electronics for the Karr.

CHALLENGES

Time Scale: 2 months to design, fund and build the Kernow Karr ready for the Eco Marathon.

Budget: £800 for all materials and equipment needed outside of the electronic department.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

BBC radio Cornwall invited us to have a broadcast interview, who were very interested to hear of our endeavours in the exploration of economically viable transportation.

The West Briton interviewed us and published our story in their newspaper prior to the event.

Page 10: Evian Davies - Portfolio

CAD AND ANALYSIS

Solidworks was our core program for creating a realistic interpretation of our concepts.

It was crucial to reduce weight and improve air resistance where possible. This was monitored using Solidworks’ built in simulation software.

Page 11: Evian Davies - Portfolio

PROTOTYPES

A full size prototype of the rear bulkhead was made for the Exeter team to ensure electronics would fit. The chassis was cut on a flatbed router and the body was done by hand.

PROTOTYPES AND TESTING

The form and structure were developed constantly to improve fuel efficiency and to meet the requirements set by Shell.

Testing rivet strength with polycarbonate

TESTS

There were many tests we had to perform to ensure safety and validity of design. For example, the polycarbonate windscreen had to hold a tight curve without rivets popping out during the race.

SCALE MODELS

Precise scale models were lasercut to ensure the car would piece together in the physical world and get an idea of how the vehicle would look.

ROTTERDAM

We made it!

Rotterdam was filled with energy, everyone was in the highest spirits, excited about the event. Our arduous efforts paid of as the Kernow Karr raced and exceeded our expectations.

Houses in the UK, on average, are being built to almost half the size they were 90 years agoRoyal Institute of British Architects“ ”

Page 15: Evian Davies - Portfolio

My project focused on the organisation of kitchens in these smaller homes. The kitchen can be seen to be a crucial location for disorganisation and an inducer of stress within a household. It is a very active space throughout the day, there is a necessity to be able to move freely and locate items as quickly and as easily as possible.

Houses in the UK, on average, are being built to almost half the size they were 90 years ago. This shrinkage is putting a large strain on families’ well-being and relationships, creating stress in the environment due to disorganisation and build-up of clutter.

Awkwardlybalancing on stools to obtain items in high in cupboards can be dangerous.

Often dead orpoorly used space located up high in

kitchens, as they are hard to reach.

Page 16: Evian Davies - Portfolio

THE DESIGN

Designed to replace wall-mounted cupboards, the shelf improves day-to-day use. Upshelf allows one to lower the shelf to the ergonomic height of a counter top. This improves accessibility which will help with organisation. The Upshelf can be mounted much higher than most wall-mounted shelves which frees up space above the counter and, seemingly, enlarges the kitchen space.

TECH SPECS

The form was designed to be manufactured with few processes to cut down on cost and reduce embodied energy.

The shelf is designed for longevity, featuring oil encapsulated mechanisms and hardwearing materials.

FEATURES

The shelf features an internal spring mechanism which steadily raises the shelf back into its upright position. This is housed within the wall mount, to be hidden from the eye.

TYPES OF AIR POLLUTANTS

BiologicalAirbourne bacteria, dustmite droppings, byproducts of living things.

ParticulateFine ash, soot and dust particles, asbestos and common dust.

GaseousBenzene from paint thinners, carbon monoxide and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

INDOOR AIR POLLUTION HISTORY

Upon the first successful space flight mission to the moon the astronauts were found to have been poisoned by their own spacecraft. Plastics, fire retardants, adhesives, resins among a list of other sources were found to have been the cause of the astronauts’ poisoning. These materials, found in every home, put their residents at risk of developing serious health defects ranging from lung irritation through to cancer.

Page 21: Evian Davies - Portfolio

AIR POLLUTION, TODAY

What did NASA do about it?

Researchers at NASA carried out experiments with plants to examine their ability to remove toxins from a contained area. The results for a few specific plants were highly significant, reducing the concentration by as much as 99%.This research was conducted in the ‘80s and has yet to be implemented effectively to this day.

Page 22: Evian Davies - Portfolio

THE DESIGN

The Oxivase, put simply, is a flower pot that enhances the plant’s air filtering abilities. The Oxivase contains a fan that helps circulate the airflow of the room, thus, cleaning more air. The air is directed at the soil as this is where it best captures pollutants allowing the plant to tranform them into food. The Oxivase is designed to be small enough to be portable (keeping one by your desk when you work and by your bed when you sleep), and still large enough to house the best air-cleaning plants.

INTERVIEW WITH DENNIS

Dennis had cancer for 17 years and was undergoing chemotherapy again. He had dealt with neuropathic symptoms through the duration of his treatment. He loved to cook for his family and took pride in his ability to carry out this daily task. He recounted circumstances when the neuropathy had created difficulties for him in carrying out certain tasks in the kitchen. As the majority of his meals involved boiling, we focused on the trouble of lifting and draining heavy pots.

FEATHERWEIGHT COOKWARE

This project was aimed at people who suffer from Chemotherapy - Induced Neuropathy. This condition restricts the nerves in the hands from being able to feel and results in an inability to hold heavy objects.

Page 25: Evian Davies - Portfolio

THE DESIGN

Dennis expressed a great deal of pain in his joints caused by the chemotherapy. He found lifting heavy pots strained his wrist and struggled to grip the handle.

The Featherweight saucepan handle is formed ergonomically to fit the shape of the hand in its relaxed position. The handle extends on to the forearm to bridge and support the wrist. These aspects create a less strenuous grip and allow the user to be able to lift pots of significantly greater weights without straining the wrist joint and causing unsteady manoeuvres.

Page 26: Evian Davies - Portfolio

FEATURES

The lid’s handle work multifunctionally as a second handle to support the pot. This way, water can be drained directly without the use of a colander or, the often opted for, precariously held lid.

Page 27: Evian Davies - Portfolio

INCLUSIVE DESIGN

Though the initial design was aimed at a very select market group, it is immediately noticeable to see the potential this design can play in many other markets. The design is an ergonomic improvement for any user due to a more comfortable grip and support that allows easier lifting.

Page 28: Evian Davies - Portfolio

ALTERNATIVE DESIGNS

While creating my final design I considered a multitude of alternative solutions that have a similar potential in the cooking world. One example was a simple steel and silicone-coated wrist support that can retrofit onto most cookware to help improve wrist support.

BRANDWAVE MARKETING

Brandwave are a Sports Advertising agency, who produce creative campaigns for big brands such as Shimano, Adidas, Henri Lloyd, Berghaus and the RNLI.

Page 31: Evian Davies - Portfolio

VAUDE SPORTSWEAR

At Brandwave I worked on a number of images for Vaude’s new sportswear collection. The images had to invoke action and were created by taking around 20 shots and merging the best ones together using Photoshop.

These images were used in their advertising campaigns at sports conventions and their website.

Page 32: Evian Davies - Portfolio

VAUDE VIDEOGRAPHY

I created these video compilations using After Effects and Premiere Pro for Brandwave’s Internal Marketing.

EMPHASIS MANAGEMENT

Emphasis are a sister company to Brandwave. They create media content for scientific companies such as Senscient and Permasense.

Page 34: Evian Davies - Portfolio

Senscient Parallaxes

I also worked on a number of parallax animations, these are still images that are chopped up into new layers to create animations using Photoshop and After Effects. These helped give context to the Senscient videos.

SENSCIENT GAS DETECTION

Senscient designed a new type of laser detection system that detects very toxic and flammable gases that can kill instantly. A colleague and I worked on creating the collection of videos (using Illustrator and After Effects) that highlights the USPs and explains the complicated system simply.

Page 35: Evian Davies - Portfolio

PERMASENSE

Permasense produce a product that sits on the exterior of pipes and monitors their thickness to gauge when a pipe may be weakening and need maintenance.I modelled and animated the sensors in their environment, using Cinema 4D, to help explain their USPs.
