YOUR garden deck is outthere in the elements allyear round, so get the

most out of it this summer bygiving it some TLC. Before the weekend, stock upat your local DIY store ondecking treatment, methylatedspirits, fungicidal wash, a stiffbroom, protective gloves and

goggles, and a good qualitywood-stain brush (unless youhave these things already). Somedecking treatments come withtheir own applicator, so youdont need a brush. On Saturday morning, startby brushing off the deckingwith the broom to get rid of dirtand debris. Use the fungicidalwash to remove any algae and

mould, then wash the deckingwith warm soapy water or apressure washer. Leave to dry. Once its dry, wipe over with acloth dampened in methylatedspirits. Its advisable to wear thegloves and goggles when doingthis and when using thefungicidal wash. By late morning/earlyafternoon, you should be readyto start applying the deckingtreatment. Work in the directionof the grain along the length ofeach board to avoid overlapmarks, and follow the manufac-turers instructions carefully. Bylate afternoon/early evening, thefirst coat should be dry (allowabout four hours between coats,
