It is now August and that means that the new school year is around the corner. With the new school year comes… new school clothes, shoes, and school supplies! This year, Tax Free Weekend is August 7-9 so
during your shopping excursions, please keep the following ongoing projects in mind.
1.1.1.1. SockSockSockSock----itititit----totototo----MAMMAMMAMMAM
Your missions giving has already provided money to purchase new uniforms for underprivileged children. However, we are still collecting new socks and underwear for boys and girls of all ages (pre-K
through high school) and all sizes. We are one of the few churches in the MAM Congregation Council that still participates in this project and MAM is extremely appreciative.

A couple of weeks ago, at Dessert and Devotion (5:30 p.m. Wednesdays), the issue of how to respond to radical Islam arose. Specifically, how are followers of Jesus to respond to terrorists?
I have done some reading and contemplation. My reaction will not find a welcome mat at everyone’s door that read this article. I am fine with that response. However, I ask you to prayerfully consider your response.
Love Your NeighborLove Your NeighborLove Your NeighborLove Your Neighbor
The word of Jesus found in Mark 12 were
stinging to those who heard them. There was intense hatred between Jews and Gentiles. Jesus
did not give any qualifying conditions to his words. You probably have neighbors, co-workers, or
people of Muslim faith that cross your path. Love them. Smile at them and treat them with respect.
Pray For and Love Your EnemiesPray For and Love Your EnemiesPray For and Love Your EnemiesPray For and Love Your Enemies
Jesus said in Mathew 5:44 to love and pray for our enemies. He even tagged it with- “those who
persecute you.” You may say that is just unrealistic.
We are to pray for those individuals around the world who seek out Christians to persecute them – to drown them or behead them. We are to
pray that they will find Jesus. We can pray for our national leaders to accurately call out what is happening. Those who subscribe to radical Islam are Islamists. Not all
Muslims are radicals but all radicals are Muslim. (Go back to point number one before you run off the
cliff) Pray that our President will call for a war against radical Islam.
So pray for your Muslim neighbors and pray for those who subscribe to the radical version as well.
Pray for the WorldPray for the WorldPray for the WorldPray for the World
Pray that all over the world, people of all faiths will have the freedom to share their faith. Yes that is right. I believe we all should have the freedom to do so. I DODODODO believe that
Christianity is the only way to God- Jesus said so in John 14:6.
For as many people as possible to hear the biblical truth that salvation is found in no other name – we must have the
freedom to share that truth.
I have thrown it out there for your consideration. If you do not agree, that is okay but I challenge you to give it some thought and prayer. The words of Jesus are just as relevant today as they were in the first century—and just as challenging.
With Him,
Jim

We are also collecting travel-sized
toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) to fill MAM’s personal care packages for the homeless. All donations can be dropped in the yellow donation boxes located in the Fellowship Hall, Worship Center and 2-story building.

We know, we know...this project doesn’t start until September, but we need to do some prep work now. While you are out shopping for new school supplies for school, don’t forget to save the shoe boxes. Please bring your empty boxes with lids to the Missions closet.
Due to our success with Operation Christmas Child last year, we will be again passing out the shoe boxes to be filled at home. So while you are out purchasing school supplies for your children, don’t forget to grab a few extra items for your box. Hold onto these items! Due to your generous Missions giving, we already had plenty of school supplies for our summer VBS projects.
Thank you so much for your continued support of the Missions Team and all of the church’s ongoing projects.
Cheers,
The Memorial Drive Baptist Church Missions Team

One of the more gratifying and beneficial opportunities we have to serve our community is to be involved in MAM’s Back-to-School Campaign (BTS). A high percentage of the school-aged children in our area need assistance in obtaining the necessary school uniforms. MAM’s goal is to assist at least 5,900 children. Their approach is to supply the uniforms in a way that enhances the love and concern of the parents and promotes the self-
esteem of the children.
Contributions to the BTS Campaign can be through purchases of the items shown on the posters around MDBC, checks to MDBC with MAM-
BTS designated, or checks made directly to MAM-
BTS. Maximum benefit is obtained when checks are
made to MAM-BTS and given through MDBC; these monies are used to purchase the items from stores who have agreed to discount prices. The campaign runs June 4 - September 30; however the greatest need is before August 10 so that clothing can be provided before school starts.
Please consider making your contribution soon.

Phase 1 is expected to reach completion by early August: including painting, greatly improved lighting, sound and platform visuals
Budget: $ 71,000* Actual: $73,000*
Phase 2 has been divided into two steps on advice of Stonewall Contractors.
Our current cash balance of $28,000* permits step 1 to begin with the order of interior and exterior doors with an estimated lead time of 4-6
weeks.
During this time, additional contributions are needed from members and regular attenders of approximately $25,000 to complete step one. Step 2 will involve a remodel of the current Worship Center restrooms and addition of a third, the Family restroom. The estimated cost is $66,000, an amount yet to be raised.
Phase 3 will see a complete resurface driveway and parking lots and lasting repairs where damage is more severe. The estimated cost is $65,000.
We recognize that asking you for a total of $250,000 over and above your regular giving is a serious matter but our team and church staff
genuinely believe these improvements are vital to allow us to provide the worship experience we and our guests need. Your continued - and often
sacrificial - giving to this effort are much appreciated. As always we are available to answer and questions or comments.

WOW! VBS is now behind us! On behalf of the
Children’s Ministry, I want to extend an ENORMOUS thank you to all who gave a week of their summer to help with Vacation Bible School. Each day we had over 100 children and volunteers “Movin’” and learning about the love of Christ. I know for many it is quite a sacrifice to give an entire week, however you do see the light and excitement in the children’s faces when they come for Vacation Bible School and their
eagerness to get that Baskin Robbins gift card is priceless! For some children, it means the difference of eternity. Thank you again and again for investing, sharing, demonstrating, dancing, and teaching these children the love of Christ!
Many Blessings, Lea Beasley
Upwards Children’s Church will resume on Sunday, September 6. If this is a ministry that you feel called to, we could certainly use your help. Email Lea Beasley at [email protected] or stop her on Sunday morning; she’d love to chat with you and let you know about Children’s Ministry opportunities.
