The Gordon Children’s Academy
Weekly Newsletter
Friday 23rd October 2018
Every Child, Every Day, Every Minute
This week has been another busy week in the life of Gordon Children’s Academy where we have attended
two mini youth games events: badminton and football. Our results have been good—and out of nineteen
schools, we are currently placed third in the fair play award. The children are continuing to enjoy the
lunchtime sports provision provided by our new sports coach.
We have also welcomed a large number of families into school this week for our successful open
mornings. The visitors were very complimentary of the children, their work and behaviour and the way
the school looked in general. As always, we were very proud of all of our children and the way they
conducted themselves.
As the weather has changed for the worse this week, please ensure that your child comes to school
wearing a warm, waterproof coat as we will endeavour to have playtimes as usual.
We hope that you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you refreshed and enthusiastic on
Monday.

EYFS
This week in EYFS we have been learning all about woodland
animals within our literacy lessons. We have been writing
circle maps, tree maps and flow maps to find out lots of
information about animals such as squirrels, fox’s, rabbits
hedgehogs and owls. On Tuesday we took our white facts hat
down to the school library and discussed what we can use a
library for and how it can help us find out lots of information
and facts about animals. On Thursday we got to have a go at
creating our own woodland creatures! We used a variety of
recourses and materials to make the animals. All the children
in EYFS were then able to produce some amazing pictures
and writing pieces of their animals within the literacy lesson.
In maths EYFS have continued their learning with careful
counting and we have been doing lots of work on matching
an amount to a number. All the children have shown great
persistence with their maths this week and should be very
proud of themselves. Well done EYFS.
Year 1
This week in Year 1 we have been creating backrgrounds and
rockets based upon the work of Peter Thorpe. We used chalk
for our backgrounds and used paint to overlay the rockets.

Year 3
This week Year 3 have been creating pictures of space using oil
pastels. We needed to think about the shapes and colours we would
use carefully. Using our green hats to think creatively we thought
about whether we would include planets or stars. We produced some
fantastic artwork!
Year 4
In Year 4, we have been learning about what
happens to a material when it changes state. We
have focused on melting this week and conducted an
experiment where we observed what happened to a
variety of materials when they were heated. We had
to be VERY patient to make sure we could observe
over a 15 minute period of time. We learned that
objects have different melting points and our
chocolate buttons turned to liquid!
In our Potions learning, we have been learning about
life as a doctor during the Tudor period. We learned
that hygiene still wasn’t important and we wrote
diaries from the view of a Plague doctor and a
trained doctor. We have also immersed ourselves
into our narrative writing and wrote some fantastic
setting descriptions inspired by Harry Potter!
If you are in Miss Kaur’s set, please bring in a jug or
bottle to your Maths lesson on Monday. Thank you!
Year 5
This week, Year 5 have been learning about the development of
humans in Science. Children were given the opportunity to use fruit to
compare the sizes of a foetus in development and then they created
their own timeline with key developmental milestones. In Maths, our
focus has been on fractions, which has really tested our accuracy and
persistence. In English, we have been continuing to read ‘The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe’, using inference and summarising skills to
answer questions about the text and consolidate our knowledge. We
have also been writing a persuasive letter to the Pevensie children,
using our creativity and accuracy, to ensure we are producing our very
best work!
Year 6
This week, Year 6 have been using their accuracy and
creativity to plan their own investigations in Science!
They have based their investigations on our topic of
electricity and hope to be able to actually test them
out to see if they work. Each child has had to
carefully think through all of the details to ensure
that someone else could follow their plan. In
addition to this, we used the prediction to consider
the outcomes of our results before we investigate.
