GUEST SPEAKER

Matt Greening 77 is the internationally renowned cartoonist and creator of The Simpsons,

Futurama and the syndicated cartoon strip, Life in Hell. Currently celebrating its tenth

anniversary, The Simpsons is the longest running prime time show on television. Futurama,

launched in spring 1999, is in production on its second season of 22 episodes.

While a student at Evergreen, Groening wrote short stories, studied philosophy and edited

the Cooper Point Journal. After graduation, Groening moved to Los Angeles where he created

the comic series, Life in Hell. In 1985, Groening met with James L. Brooks, producer of The

Tracey Ullman Show, about creating animation between skits on the hit comedy series. The

Simpsons premiered as a two-minute piece in September 1987. Groening's animated series

has won 15 Emmys, a Peabody Award and numerous other awards and accolades.

As publisher of Bongo Comics, Groening has created several comic books. He has two

special comic series to his credit: Lisa Comics and Krusty Comics. In addition, Groening has

written a number of books, including Bart's Guide to Life, Making Faces with the Simpsons and

The Simpsons Family Album.

provided in Lecture Hall 1 and other posted locations. This accomodation was created as part of anacademic project by first year Master in Public Administration students.

Seating is available for individuals with disabilities.

We ask all those attending to please refrain from smoking during the ceremony.

We request that family and friends of graduates refrain from taking pictures

in the roped-off section in front of the stage.

Key administrators will be available for photographs at the reception

immediately following the ceremony.

CEREMONIAL MACE/Originally a weapon used in medieval warfare by a king or great noble, the mace has become a symbol

used on ceremonial occasions. As an academic device, the mace goes back to 16th-century England, when

Queen Elizabeth I presented a replica of her own royal mace to the corporation of the University of

Oxford in 1589. She ordered that it be used in all ceremonies to represent the royal presence and the

authority granted to the university to issue degrees under the royal insignia. Since that time, it has become '•

increasingly the custom for European, and now American, colleges and universities to use ceremonial

maces during graduation exercises.

' The Evergreen State College mace is a gift from the late Byron Youtz, former Academic Vice

President and Provost, who donated the materials, and faculty member Earle McNeil, who gave his time

and talent to its creation.

The shape of the cap is suggestive of a crown and represents the principle of knowledge and

experience. To remind us that such an integration is a carefully balanced blend of diverse aspects of human

nature, there are four inlaid circles symbolizing four major ways of experiencing the world—thinking,

feeling, intuiting and sensing—and four main characteristics of the human mind—wisdom, innocence,

introspection And illumination.

THE COLLEGE MEDALLIONMedallions are traditionally worn by presidents and chancellors.at ceremonial occasions. The medallion

designed for Charles McCann for his inauguration in 1972 was given by Dr. McCann to the. Library

Archives.

The college's second medallion (which President Jervis wears today) was designed for her inaugu-

ration in September 1994 by Spokane artist Joyce Attwood. It is fabricated of moonstone (from Nepal),

paua shell (from New Zealand), turquoise, silver, copper, brass, gold and acrylic and is suspended on a 30-

inch chain (from Thailand). The medallion design shows an evergreen tree with Mount Rainier and the

sea in the background. It is an interpretation of the Evergreen logo, designed in 1973 by Connie Hubbard,

the college's first graphic artist. In 1983, the Board of Trustees approved the "tree" as the official college

emblem and it was registered with the Secretary of State as Evergreen's logo.

ACADEMIC COSTUMESThe origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking

form. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. Long gowns

and hoods were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings/Today, many

institutions choose distinctively colored gowns. The design of the sleeve indicates the level of the degree

earned by the wearer. Hoods have both the colors of the institution and a band indicating the academic

discipline in which the degree was earned.
