Inductee AnnouncementWe are pleased to announce the formal induction of John Warjone into the Forestry leadership Hall.

Throughout his 44-year career with Port Blakely, John Warjone made significant contributions that positioned the company to be one of the leaders in sustainable forest management in the United States.

Recognizing the value of diversifying the company’s forestland assets beyond the United States, John led the team that established Port Blakely New Zealand Forestry and was later promoted to president of the division, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. In the Pacific Northwest, he oversaw the implementation of Port Blakely’s first Habitat Conservation Plan, which now covers 9,700 acres in western Washington. John also held the position of president of Port Blakely U.S. Forestry and served a 10-year stint as a director before officially retiring in 2006.

John’s contribution to the forestry sector goes beyond his role at Port Blakely. He was a cofounder and the first president of the Pacific Education Institute, a nonprofit in Washington State that connects educators to science. Through Port Blakely’s Environmental Education Program, which he started and is now in its 27th year, 90,000 students, parents, and teachers in Washington and Oregon have visited Port Blakely’s working forests. Also noteworthy is his support for the World Forestry Center. John served as vice president from 2009 to 2011 and chairman of the board from 2011 to 2014. He is currently a member of our Advisory Council.

We are excited to announce the groundbreaking of the World Forestry Center Miller Hall landscape project, the Grandchildren's Garden.

Over a year ago, the Miller Family came to visit Miller Hall with a suggestion to improve the functionality, intimacy and beauty of the Miller Hall grounds for the next generation of World Forestry Center patrons. Their vision, designed by Huntington and Kiest, includes upgrading and improving walkways, installing a wooden arbor and fencing, and planting dozens of additional native trees and shrubs. The name “Grandchildren’s Garden” carries on the legacy of Harold A. Miller and Miller Hall in supporting the next generation of forestry champions.

With the support of the Miller Family, we have raised the necessary funding for the project and will begin construction this winter with a completion target of spring 2019. We look forward to sharing this new space with our community.

Farewell to the 2018 WFI International FellowsEvery year, for over two decades, the World Forest Institute selects a group of natural resource professionals from around the globe to participate in the International Fellowship Program.

The premise of the program is to expose these leaders to new ideas in sustainable forestry, inspiring positive change in their natural resource management practices. The exchange of ideas is the outcome of the generous knowledge-sharing culture of the Pacific Northwest natural resource community. This year five professionals joined us, leaving their families, friends, and businesses behind for six-months. After successfully completing their program, the Fellows have returned home to implement and share their freshly-acquired knowledge in their communities.

Looking back over the past six months, the Fellows’ study tour to Hampton Lumber-Willamina Division was a highlight. One of the owners, David Hampton, toured the Fellows through their state-of-the-art sawmill facility. David shared with the Fellows his family's business legacy from their modest beginnings as a single sawmill in Willamina, Oregon, to an international, vertically-integrated forest products company with over 1,600 employees. Hampton Lumber is now one of the largest sawmills in the U.S. and one of the top ten lumber producers in North America.

The Fellows were introduced to the Hampton’s company culture, one that puts their employees’ safety first, which along with energy efficiency and sustainability, informs capital improvement projects. Hampton’s culture reflects a strong sense of giving back to the communities in which it does business. Many thanks to Hampton Lumber for always being willing to share their forestry knowledge with our international visitors.

Who Will Own the Forest? Technology, Changing Demographics, and Climate Change This year’s 14th annual WWOTF Conference brought more than 430 executives, investors, asset managers, landowners, and conservationists to Portland to examine the drivers, trends, and impacts of institutional timberland investing.

Speakers covered a wide range of topics. Highlights included a presentation by Steven Weilbach, vice president GTM of Katerra, on how technological advances are revolutionizing the construction sector; a panel moderated by Jim Hourdequin, CEO and managing director of The Lyme Timber Company, discussed challenges facing the logger workforce; and seven speakers across two sessions describing ways productive forests can contribute to mitigating climate change. Other speakers covered timber opportunities in India, China, Russia, and Latin America.

The World Forestry Center also held its 8th Annual Forest Products Forum in partnership with Massachusetts- based consulting firm Forest Economic Advisors. The event drew over 100 attendees and featured speakers covering wood products markets, including tariff implications for wood trade with China.

The 2019 Forest Products Forum and Who Will Own the Forest? will be held on September 17-19.

The Hagenstein Lectures Emerging Voices in Forestry

The third annual Hagenstein Lectures, moderated by Nicole Strong of Oregon State University, showcased six young professionals including Dr. Thomas Easley, new assistant dean at Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Dr. Easley addressed the opportunities and challenges young people face pursuing a career in forestry, the importance of mentors and actions that can be taken to be more inclusive, diverse, and equitable.

Mike Warjone, senior director of strategy for Port Blakely, and Angie DiSalvo, outreach and science supervisor for Portland Parks and Recreation, discussed the role forest management can play in local and global carbon balance. Zack Parisa, co-founder and president of SilviaTerra and Dr. Edie Sonne Hall, founder and principal of Three Trees Consulting, shared their thoughts on market-based solutions for better production and conservation outcomes using new data sources and advanced analytical tools.

The event was presented by the World Forestry Center and the Society of American Foresters. Thank you to event sponsors Oregon Forest Resources Institute, Hopworks Urban Brewery, and Friends of Trees.

Please visit The Hagenstein Lectures website and YouTube Channel for more information: www.hagensteinlectures.org.

What’s old is New Again, langdon Plate Collection The incomparable beauty of wood from around the world is on display once again. This exhibit showcases just a fraction of the hundreds of wooden plates created by James Porter Langdon, a woodcarver and retired forester.

Currently, 150 wooden plates made of wood from all over the world are on view, with common and scientific names for the species listed.

Langdon was born in Portland in 1906 and worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 30 years before he retired. He had a long history in natural resource management, working at the Columbia National Forest in Vancouver, the Mount Hood National Forest in Zigzag, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Langdon gifted his prized collection to the World Forestry Center just a few months before his passing in 1990.

We encourage you to see this elegant collection which marries the natural beauty of wood with artistic simplicity. It is a reminder that trees come in many variations of color, density, textures, and languages, just as we humans do.

january 12, 2019 – june 30, 2019Timber Culture: The History of Maxville, oregon – A City United and Divided

This exhibit of historical photographs provides an inclusive look at Oregon’s multicultural logging industry by depicting the lives of loggers and their families drawn together from different cultures during the Great Migration.

We are grateful to the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center for loaning this exhibit to us.
