Statistical and Research Analyst III, Department of Family Medicine 2003-2011

Medical University of South Carolina Epidemiological research of coronary heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, hypertension and hemochromatosis. Major accomplishments while with MUSC Family Medicine: Analyzed both primary and secondary data using SAS, SUDAAN, Mplus, and MedCalc

software. Performed cross-tabulations, logistic regressions, survival analyses, linear regressions, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and path analysis.

Used secondary data sources from the CDC which included the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I, II, III, and 1999-2008), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), and National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS).

Evaluated cohorts and cross-sectional studies from the NHLBI which included the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, Framingham Heart Study – Offspring, Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening Study (HEIRS), and Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Wrote up methods and results sections of manuscripts for faculty in the Department of Family Medicine, and was a co-author on 56 scholarly articles while in Family Medicine.

Investigated epidemiological relationships and wrote 15 first-author papers on clinical and environmental topics such as magnesium, fibrinogen, PCBs, and pesticides and their association with diabetes, hypertension and cancer.

Research Soil Scientist, Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences 2008-2011 Virginia Tech Reanalyzing data from Master’s theses and co-authoring Wetlands and Environmental Soil Science publications as part of a manuscript completion service. Adjunct Faculty, Department of Biology 2002-2003 College of Charleston Teaching Biology 102, Elements of Biology WestRock Corporation (formerly Westvaco) 1981-2002 Research Soil Scientist III, Forest Science Laboratory, Summerville, SC 1989-2002 Team Leader of Forest Stand Nutrition Mission and Land Characterization Mission.

Research in pine nutrition, nutrient cycling and land classification.

Research Soil Scientist, Forest Science Laboratory, Summerville, SC 1983-1989 Research in land classification, forest site quality evaluation and phosphorus cycling.

Research Soil Scientist, Charlottesville Research Center, Crozet, VA 1981-1983 Research in forest site quality evaluation. Major accomplishments while with Westvaco: Initiated, designed and implemented a series of fertilizer trials to develop conceptual models and

operational prescription guidelines for fertilization of young loblolly pine stands. Increased tree growth by 10% with N+P fertilization at time of crown closure.

Conducted applied and basic research on the availability of residual phosphorus fertilizer to second rotation loblolly pine stands. Developed conceptual models and operational prescription guidelines for second rotation phosphorus fertilization.

Led research team that developed protocols for mapping soil and site characteristics on the South Carolina Lower Coastal Plain and Virginia Piedmont. The protocols were used by contract surveyors to map company lands in both regions.

Evaluated forest productivity on prototype soil map units on the South Carolina Lower Coastal Plain. Convinced Timberlands Division management that the proposed land classification system could be used to characterize forest site quality.

Identified soil-site factors influencing forest productivity on the Virginia Piedmont. Research results were used to help define soil mapping protocols.

Research techniques used: In addition to establishing field plots and measuring tree response, these laboratory and field techniques were used to characterize soil nutrients, nutrient uptake, foliage and root responses, and the soil environment. Data analysis techniques are also listed. phosphorus fractionation for soil organic and mineral components phosphatase assay for soil enzyme activity buried anion exchange membranes for available phosphorus buried resin bags for available nitrogen sequential core technique for available nitrogen Skogley’s resin capsule procedure for available nitrogen quantity-intensity diagrams for available potassium
