IN 1971 St Peter’s Church, which stands imposingly at the head of Market Hill, was closed for public worship. The Parish of St Gregory with St Peter was finding the strain of supporting two medieval buildings too much.

On 29th May 1976 ownership of the building passed to the Churches Conservation Trust which cares for the building and has spent many thousands of pounds in doing so.

In the same year the Friends of St Peter, Sudbury was formed with the aim of keeping the building open, in good order and enabling its use for the benefit of the community. The Friends have continued and are continuing to do so.

The Friends arrange concerts and other events and organise a series of organ recitals with an organ marathon each year in order to make best use of the magnificent instrument in the church. Through their stewardship and day to day management of the building the Friends enable use for many events such as services, orchestral and other concerts,

fashion shows, craft fairs, art exhibitions, horticultural shows, farmers’ markets, historical exhibitions and model railway exhibitions. There has even been a medieval banquet and the church has been used from time to time for weddings and funerals as well as for joint services organised by Churches Together in Sudbury which group also hosts the Kettle and Fish on many Thursdays.

The Friends of St Peter would welcome your interest in using the building for an event. They also welcome your support in any other way.

WITH FIREWORKS season fast approaching, and the time for fireworks being much longer than simply November 5th, amongst all the fuss and frolics care must be taken to ensure our pets are safe and sound. Veterinary surgeries throughout the UK see an increasing number of pets requiring medications to calm them during this stressful time and for injuries resulting from fireworks. Because animals have such an acute sense of hearing, loud bangs and whistles are not just frightening but can even be painful to their ears. Therefore the general advice below can help to keep your pets stress free and safe during fireworks.• Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.• Keep doors and windows locked to prevent pets escaping and to keep any noise to a minimum.• Drawing curtains and putting the TV/radio on can help to drown out the unfamiliar noise of fireworks.• Never take your dog to a firework display.• Always make sure your pet is wearing some form of identification so that if they run away they can easily be returned to you.• Rabbits/guinea pigs/birds etc should be brought inside to a quiet room or to a garage/shed, and their hutches or aviaries covered with blankets to block out some noise and bright lights, but ensure there is adequate ventilation.

In addition there are a variety of treatments available for this stressful period that can be helpful, and it is worth talking to your vet about these for both this year and future events. So please have a wonderful fireworks night, but please don’t forget your pets.

Ardmore Veterinary Group are pleased to announce the completion of our new theatre suite and cat and dog wards. We will be having an open day in September for all to come and see the changes and meet the team. Our facebook page ‘ardmorevets’ will keep everyone updated re news, latest offers and useful links.

SNT is a registered charity established almost 30 years ago. Our listeners are registered blind or partially sighted but just like you, really want to know what is going on. This is why Sudbury Newstalk, the recorded local news and bi-monthly magazine, makes a difference. Run by volunteers in our studio here in Sudbury. We are members of the Talking Newspaper Federation and would like to hear from anyone who could help, as a Technician, Editor, or Fund raiser. Please call Jane on 01787 468535 or Trevor on 01787 372505.
