The most stunning artefact recovered in Ljubljana, beneath Gosposvetska ulica street. A 1,700-year-old transparent blue glass bowl, a little more than eight inches in diameter, was found buried next to the woman at the center of the cemetery. The vessel is decorated on the outside with grapes, and vine leafs and tendrils. A Greek inscription on the inside of the bowl instructs the owner to »Drink to live forever, for many years!« This exquisite drinking bowl could have been used in everyday life as well as possibly for burial ceremonies, whether pagan, Christian or Jewish.

Spirit of the City, Ljubljana Old Town through the eyes of Tihomir Pinter, photo exhibition14 Jan - 14 Mar, Kresija GalleryA master of analogue black & white photography in handmade gelatin silver prints offers to take you through the old town of Ljubljana. Tihomir Pinter had been known, above all, for his portraits of artists, musicians and writers, for depictions of artists’ studios, as well as for his ironworks series. This time, he is putting on view the photographs taken during his walks around the Ljubljana old town, to pay homage to the city where, after travelling and moving extensively across the former Yugoslavia, he settled with his family in 1970 and which he now calls his own.Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Saturdays 10:00 - 14:00, Sndays 10:00 - 13:00. Closed: holidaysAdmission free

Milton Glaser: Posters23 Nov 2018 - 3 Mar 2019, International Centre of Graphic ArtsMilton Glaser (1929, New York) is one of the most important graphic designers in the world, who has designed hundreds of corporate images, magazines, newspapers, books, LP covers, and has created thousands of posters during his career spanning over fifty years. He has been inscribed into the world history of design with his iconic “I love NY” logo. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Let’s Celebrate Together. Hundred Years of the National Gallery of Slovenia15 Jan - 15 Mar, Tivoli Park, Jakopič PromenadeOn the 18th of September, 1918, the National Gallery Society was founded - having neither art holdings or exhibition space nor financial assets, but furnished with a lot of zeal. The palace of Narodni Dom became its home in 1925, and since 1933 an extensive permanent art collection has been exhibited in it. Thirteen years later the Gallery became a state institution and a home for all of us.Displayed along the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park are details of works of art from the Gallery’s permanent collection which was considerably expanded after the renovation of the palace of Narodni Dom in 2016. To recognize them as creations of our artists means to belong to the Slovenian community, to participate in its happy and less happy days with that creative willpower that brought into existence the National Gallery of Slovenia.

Exhibitions

Plečnik CollectionThe new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention.Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). A group may be a maximum of seven persons.Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Zoran Mušič (1909-2005)Permanent exhibition at the National GalleryZoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lives, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana’s National Gallery displays the world’s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič’s work, which explores the entire range of the famous artist’s painting techniques. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays

The permanent exhibition about the history of Ljubljana. How well do you know the rich history of Slovenian capital? Pile-dwellers, Emona, Middle and New Ages, the 20th and 21st centuries… what is the history of Ljubljana? A chronological presentation of Ljubljana’s millennia of heritage with precious authentic artefacts, like the world’s oldest wooden wheel with an axle aged 5,200 years, is on display on Ljubljana. History. City. exhibition. In our globalised world, heritage just might be what differentiates cities the most, and it also shaped our capital’s identity. Therefore, the exhibition proudly highlights local peculiarities, stories of everyday life in the past, and the individuals who left the strongest impressions on our history. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays until 21:00. Closed: Mondays

One of the finest Cuban ensembles of all time led by the inspired and inspiring Juan de Marcos González, the driving force behind the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon. The band presents all Cuban styles of music, a smooth set of salsa-infused classics, and features both seasoned performers and younger Cuban instrumentalists. a bridge between contemporary and traditional Cuban music. I’m trying to mix both things, so people can realize that Cuban music didn’t stop in time, that it developed in this long period when Cuban music disappeared from the market.” Juan Marcos de Gonzalez

The legendary tenor José Carreras occupies a privileged position in the music world, due to his musical career, which started with early debuts at the world’s most prestigious opera houses and festivals. As one of the Three Tenors, he gained fame with a wider audience in a series of mass concerts that began in 1990 and continued until 2003. They created an unprecedented impact in the world of opera and were followed by world-wide audiences of over two billion fans. Carreras’ voice is regarded as one of the most beautiful tenor vocals of all time, and his return to classical scenes undoubtedly includes a romantic repertoire, which with his tenderness and top voice approaches visitors of his concerts and certainly leaves them indifferent.

Maksim Mrvica is one of the most popular crossover pianists in the world. By combining popular and classic, film and electronic music, he also approached the younger audience, and extravagant performances are fascinated by demanding visitors. After a very successful year 2018 with a sold out concert in the famous Sydney Opera House and sold out arenas in the biggest Chinese cities, Maksim Mrvica will perform in Slovenia. The Ljubljana concert is a part of the New Silk Road tour, which is at the same time the title of the new studio album. Within the tour, Maksim predicts sixty concerts on three continents.
