Welcome to Mount Horeb! We are the Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce & Welcome Center and we are happy that you have taken an interest in all that our community has to offer. We’ve packed this little booklet with information about Mount Horeb and the surrounding area and hope that you find it helpful.

Mount Horeb is more than just a place to live and work. We have numerous attractions and a rich Norwegian heritage that is sure to delight. You’ll quickly fall in love with our small-town charm and hospitality present in our museums, shops, and festivals. Stay a little longer at a local hotel, inn, bed & breakfast, cabin, vacation rental, or campground.

Mount Horeb is part of the Driftless Region and is protected by trolls, known as “lords of nature.” If it’s outdoor fun you’re seeking, stop by one of our four parks, go skiing, snowshoeing, biking or hiking. A short scenic drive from Madison, nature sets the stage for things to do outdoors during every season. Be sure to stop at the Cave of the Mounds to explore the caverns, and bring a camera

to capture photos of our rolling hills and stunning vistas. If shopping is more of what you are looking for, be sure to visit the many shops on our walkable “Trollway,” and stop to have lunch or dinner at one of our restaurants.

Mount Horeb has been home to some of the area’s best festivals for nearly fifty years. This year we will be celebrating our 47th Art Fair, our 37th Fall Heritage Festival, and our

17th Thirsty Troll Brew Fest. These events draw thousands of visitors from around the world to Mount Horeb, making it a premier event destination.

CommunityMount Horeb’s residents know that there is something special about our

village. Whether it’s the walkable downtown, great restaurants and shops, or unbeatable outdoor recreation, Mount Horeb is one of the most sought-after

communities in Dane County for settling down and raising a family.

If you’re the outdoorsy type, you’re just a short drive from some incredible access to nature. Spend an afternoon hiking Stewart Lake Country Park, or grab your bike and pedal right into Madison on the Military Ridge State Trail. Teach yourself to fly-fish in Black Earth Creek, or go horseback riding at Donald Park. Those who’d rather cozy up inside can check out the public library or sip a hot drink at one of our locally-owned cafes and eateries.

Mount HorebMount Horeb is a jewel nestled in the rolling hills of Wisconsin’s Driftless Region. Officially named “The Troll Capital of the World®,” the trolls of Norwegian lore are known to protect our village’s many treasures. You can enjoy these whimsical statues throughout the village by visiting our area businesses.

Things to DoDiscover a new experience every time you visit Mount Horeb. Snap some selfies with our carved trolls (see page 20 for Troll Map), and grab a delicious rosette at Schubert’s Diner. At Glitter to Gore, make your own nail polish or get a glitter, airbrush or henna tattoo. Learn about the region’s history at the Driftless Historium and taste their delicious ice cream, created by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville! Become a spelunker and mine some gemstones at Cave of the Mounds, the jewelbox of the midwest. Learn how chocolatiers at Sjolinds Chocolate House take their chocolate from bean to bar. Every Thursday in the summer, you can pick up some local produce and other goodies at our downtown Farmer’s Market. Meet local beekeepers, cheesemakers, and farmers who create the foods we love.

Scandihoovian Festival - Old Train Depot

Visitors to Mount Horeb also get to enjoy our beautiful neighbor, Blue Mounds. Home to Blue Mounds State Park and Brigham County Park, Blue Mounds plays host to some of the greatest outdoor exploring in the area. You can become a spelunker for the day at Cave of the Mounds, a privately owned and operated National Natural Landmark.

Brigham County Park offers incredible panoramic views of the Wisconsin River Valley. Take your family on a picnic, or bring your tent and stay for the weekend. More great camping options can be found down the road at Blue Mounds State Park. This 1,153-acre park is popular for swimming, hiking, birding, cross-country skiing, and biking. It sits atop the tallest hill in Southern Wisconsin, offering unmatched views. They say on a clear day, you can see all the way to Iowa!

Blue Mounds is also home to Botham Winery, a local treasure that has been growing and producing regionally distinctive wines of international acclaim since 1989. Take a tour or sit back on the deck and enjoy a taste of the Driftless Region.

THE TROLLWAYKnown as “Troll Capital of the World,” Mount Horeb’s historic Main Street is lined with life-sized carvings from tree trunks by local sculptor, Michael Feeney, and other area carvers. Pick up an Area Guide and take a self-guided tour of the trolls along the Trollway. Download the Troll Prints app for all of the details.

TROLLWAY SHOPSMount Horeb’s Main Street is a hub of activity where you will find specialty shops for buying Scandinavian imports, antiques, art, clothing, books, home-spun yarns, pastries, chocolates, and fabulous restaurants! Shops are generally open from 10am to 5pm seven days a week all year. Please check hours.

DRIFTLESS HISTORIUM - MHAHS MUSEUMA cultural destination emphasizing the connection between the unique Driftless landscape and those who’ve lived here. Visit our award-winning exhibit galleries, browse 100s of unique museum store items, take part in interactive and educational programs or explore MHAHS’s expansive archive and collection via our Research Center. Open Wednesday - Sunday,10am-4pm.

TYROL BASIN SKI & SNOWBOARD AREATyrol Basin Ski & Snowboard Area provides family-friendly outdoor winter fun by offering skiing and boarding for people of all ages and abilities. Located just 5 miles north of Mount Horeb and 20 minutes west of Madison, Tyrol’s 17 tree-lined slopes extend over 40 acres on the 300-foot vertical hill.

CAVE OF THE MOUNDSThis National Natural Landmark takes visitors through a cavern of stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls, and other mineral formations. Located in Blue Mounds, the limestone cave was accidentally discovered in 1939 and opened to visitors in 1940. Open all year, the cave stays about 50º year round, and is located 4 miles from Mount Horeb.

WALLY KELLER TOOL MUSEUMThe Duluth Trading Co. houses the Wally Keller Tool Museum, displaying a collection of vintage tools from farms, blacksmiths, firefighters, and more, some dating back to the early 1800s. Each pegboard display panel is an artful collage of tools, arranged in a way that traces their ingenious development.

SJOLINDS CHOCOLATE FACTORYHead to Mount Horeb and tour this bean-to-bar chocolate factory. Tours and sampling are available by appointment; call to arrange your tour.

DEER VALLEY GOLF COURSE & WATERPARKOne of southern Wisconsin’s most beautiful and challenging golf courses sits only a few minutes from Mount Horeb. 27 holes of great golf awaits. Sharing this picturesque landscape is the Deer Valley Lodge is also home to the largest indoor water park in the area with 12,000 sq. ft. of pools, slides, and play equipment—day passes available. Located on Hwy 18/151 in Barneveld—exit 58.

MOUNT HOREB TROLL SKATE PARK9000 sq. ft. concrete skate park located at 201 Telemark Pkwy., Sunrise Park, (under the east side water tower) consists of a 1500 sq. ft. bowl and many concrete and steel plaza elements - ledges, stairs, rails, benches, and more. The skate park is open from spring until autumn, when no snow or ice is on the concrete. Open daily 8am to dusk.

NORSK GOLF CLUBBuilt in 1927, this 9 hole scenic regulation golf course offers something for everyone. Norsk Golf Club offers weekday rates, golf outings, lessons, season passes, and all your rental needs. Year round clubhouse includes a full bar and grill, 8 lanes of bowling, and outdoor seating.

GRUMPY TROLL BREWERYThe historic Mount Horeb Creamery building was built in 1916 and was turned into the Grumpy Troll in 1996. The on-site brewery features up to 12 beers on tap spanning all tastes and styles. Open 11am to 11pm, 7 days a week.

DONALD COUNTY PARKLocated between Mount Horeb and Mount Vernon on Hwy 92, it provides recreational and equestrian opportunities for local residents and visitors.

CAMPO DI BELLA WINERY & FARMTucked away in the Driftless area of Wisconsin in the Town of Blue Mounds this winery honors Italian heritage. This vineyard and winemaking business is dedicated to sustainable practices. Enjoy wines at the Friday evening wine bar and at Farm-to-Table dinner events (all reservation only).

DIST. #1 OLD SCHOOL HOUSEThe oldest surviving school building in Mount Horeb was originally located at 306-310 W. Main Street. The school was built between 1884—1889. Now located at 110 N. Second St. Plans are underway to include a school museum. The school is open for special events or by reservation (608-576-5837).

TOWN OF PERRY HISTORIC DISTRICT PARKThe Town of Perry Historic District Park surrounds the Hauge Log Church National Historic Landmark. The unique 30-acre park boasts a spectacular scenic view of the Blue Mounds, stunning vistas of the Wisconsin Driftless Area’s glacial formation extending to Saint Louis, breathtaking sunsets, and quiet serenity on 1.5 miles of groomed trails for walking, hiking, kite flying, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and picnicking. “Best place to watch a sunset in Dane County” - Madison Magazine

BOTHAM VINEYARD Visit the tasting room, sample wines and learn more about their uncommon approach to winemaking in Wisconsin. Schedule a tour and/or a private tasting and get an insiders view into the vineyard, facilities, and winemaking. Spectacular grounds offer breathtaking views, wildlife, and birds in every direction. Just 10 minutes west of Mt Horeb.

STEWART COUNTY PARK Established in 1935, it is Dane County’s 1st park. Within the 191 acre park is Stewart Lake, built on a spring-fed tributary of Blue Mound Creek. The lake offers trout and bass fishing. Recreational facilities include picnic shelters, play equipment, cross-country ski and hiking trails. It can be reached by going north on Hwy JG.

BLUE MOUND STATE PARKThe park is the highest point in southern Wisconsin. Enjoy scenic panoramic views from two 40 ft. park observations towers. The campground contains 77 wooded sites and rustic accessible cabin for people with disabilities. Other amenities include nature programs, off-road bike trails, picnic grounds and a large outdoor swimming pool. Campers have direct access to the Military Ridge State Park Trail.

BRIGHAM COUNTY PARK Minutes from Mount Horeb and located a few miles from Blue Mound State Park and Cave of the Mounds, this park features 25 camp sites, 1 group camp area, picnic areas, playgrounds, and panoramic views of the Wisconsin River Valley and the Baraboo Bluffs.

MILITARY RIDGE STATE TRAILThis 39 mile trail—once a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad line—runs through the heart of Mount Horeb. Centrally located along the trail it offers visitors exercise, a scenic view of the village, the comfort of a shelter with restrooms, information station, bike racks, and parking. Bike passes may be obtained at the Welcome Center, Grumpy Troll, Premier Co-op West, the Village Inn Motel, Miller & Sons Supermarket, and GrandStay Hotel. Open to hikers and bikers daily 6am-11pm.

Play at one of the Village’s family-friendly parks, bike the Military Ridge State Trail, hike at Stewart Lake County Park or Blue Mounds State Park, or go horseback riding at Donald Park. Hiking & BikingMount Horeb is a jewel nestled in the rolling hills of Wisconsin’s Driftless Region. Officially named “The Troll Capital of the World®,” the trolls of Norwegian lore are known to protect our village’s many treasures. You can enjoy these whimsical statues throughout the village by visiting our area businesses.

The grass should never grow under your feet while in Mount Horeb. There are vast biking and hiking options in the Mount Horeb area. Bike the 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail, connecting Dodgeville to Madison by way of an 1855 military route. No bike, no problem, ‘Trail This’ our local bike shop offers rentals with a one day notice.

Mount Horeb is also home to a state park and three county parks, that offer miles and miles of great hiking. Blue Mound State Park boasts the highest point in Southern Wisconsin, plus two amazing 40-foot observations towers in the park. Come and enjoy the great outdoors in Mount Horeb!
