Welcome to Florence

Dear colleagues,

on behalf of AOSpine Europe, it will be a great pleasure and honor to welcome you to the AOSpine Master Symposium on inflammatory diseases of the spine taking place in the beautiful city of Florence.

Important goals in understanding and treating inflammatory and metabolic diseases of bone and joints have recently been reached by the scientific community; nevertheless there are still many pathologies that produce instability and deformities of the spine as well as neurological unpairments, and surgery remains the best treatment in some invalidating or life-threatening situations. Therefore in treating such complex cases the spine surgeon has to face not only challenging technical problems, but must also be aware of how the natural history of the underlying disease can influence the post-operative course and the long-term results of surgery. Biology and medical treatments often have the same importance as surgery to obtain good results in treating inflammatory and metabolic diseases of the spine.

A panel of qualified experts will give a state of the art update, but, as always during AOSpine educational events, we expect that the participants will also contribution to the success of the event.

The symposium will be held on 30 September - 1 October 2016 in Florence. The city of Florence is beloved by everybody in the world, being a unique concentration of art, beauty and elegance; so the location represents a further reason to attend the event.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Florence.Sincerely,

Alberto MaleciChairpersonCagliari, Italy

Symposium Description

You can expect to have an update of the most common inflammatory diseases that can affect the spine in order to acquire a distinct knowledge that will allow to select patients who will benefit from conservative or surgical therapy. You can also expect to learn which are the best surgical options, to be able to design a sound surgical plan and to understand possible complications in order to avoid them. This educational event will be focused on the involvement of spine in two of the most common inflammatory diseases of the spine i.e. rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis and offers you a challenging opportunity to share the faculty’s expertise in these fields. The event will consist also of a few lectures but will privilege case presentation and debates and will provide ample time for discussion between faculty and participants: it will be taught in a modular format with interactive session facilitated by the faculty.

Target Participants

This event is targeted at surgeons with at least 10 years of experience in spine surgery, who usually have to manage a variety of spinal pathologies including inflammatory diseases of the spine at all levels, and who have experience also in surgery of the cranial-vertebral junction.

Symposium Objectives

After the course, participants should be able to:• Choose the best operative and non-operative treatment for each patient• Prevent neurological deficits related to pathology• Know possible surgery-related complications• Have a good anticipation of long-term results of surgical treatment• Give information to patients on natural history, treatment expectations or future problems

associated with the deformity
