Christine Chan and Angela Lee (both from BBA Management, Year 3) par ticipated in the Human Resources category of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition in 2014. After a preliminary round, the team of two was chosen to participate in the final round of the competition, held at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, Canada on 2-4 January 2014. The team was one of only a handful of teams chosen from outside of Canada, and was competing against teams that had taken an entire subject to train for this competition!

Christine Chan says:“It was our honor to represent the PolyU Faculty of Business competing in ICBC 2014. This competition provided us with an invaluable opportunity to learn and apply our knowledge to real industrial contexts. It was a good platform to enable us to integrate what we had learned in class, and to propose business solutions in real industrial contexts with time constraints. It also gave us an opportunity to enhance our cross-cultural experience and gain an understanding of Canadian history and culture.”

Angela Lee says:“I am proud of being able to make it so far … I got the opportunity to interact with brilliant students from various countries. The feedback I got from the judges was really useful. I was also able to observe different schools' presentations and learn from them … This whole competition experience has been wonderful. I am really thankful for this opportunity and I think it is extremely useful for FB students to have the chance to participate in such international competitions.”

The pilot-run Chinese version CAR subject entitled “First Bucket of Gold in China” was successfully launched last summer in Hangzhou, China. A total of 45 students came from various departments to take this subject. During the 7-day field trip in Hangzhou, they visited three popular companies and attended three influencing CEO forums. The Alibaba Group was one of the companies they visited. Most of the students were so impressed with the Marketing Director’s sharing of Alibaba’s history and innovations, and the future direction of its development. In the CEO forum, students had opportunities to consult CEOs regarding their experience in business ventures. Overall, this subject should provide students with an understanding of the skills needed for doing business with technologies and the Internet in China.

This year, we are offering this subject again, working together with CAPS (the Office of Careers and Placement Services) to integrate it with project-based WIE jobs in Hangzhou. Students can arrange to stay behind after this subject’s field trip in Hangzhou and continue to work on subject-related business projects in an organization there.

To accompany this subject, a book with the same title as “First Bucket of Gold in China” was written by the subject lecturer Dr Eric Lam and published by Pearson last November. It is a practical book with the key knowledge to guide readers in starting up their business step by step in China. The book covers the major topics of: 1. Business venture trends and thinking, 2. Creativity in business ventures,

3. Bridging the business plan and real world, 4. Entrepreneurs killing skills, 4. Learning from others, 5. Building business models, 6. Where the funding comes from, and 7. Review when the time is right.

Dr Flora Gu has a co-authored paper published in the October 2013 issue of the Journal of Marketing Research. The co-authors of her paper, entitled “Observer Effects of Punishment in a Distribution Network”, are Dr Danny Wang of Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr Maggie Dong of the City University of Hong Kong.

Abstract

In a distribution network, a punishment event not only affects the disciplined distributor but also changes the attitudes and behaviors of others in the network (i.e., observers). By moving beyond a dyadic view of punishment, this article considers the effects of punishment on observers and integrates insights from social learning, fairness heuristic, and social network theories. The resulting framework of the observer effects of punishment in a distribution network, empirically tested with a survey in China, reveals

two mechanisms through which punishment leads to reduced observer opportunism: (1) a direct deterrence effect and (2) a trust-building process. Moreover, two information-related constructs moderate the observer effects differently. The disciplined distributor’s relational embeddedness, which motivates greater information flow to observers, aggravates the problem of information asymmetry against the manufacturer, making punishment less deterrent for observers. In contrast, the manufacturer’s monitoring capability, which reduces information asymmetry, strengthens observer effects.

In light of previous research on opportunism that has largely focused on positive mechanisms, such as monitoring, incentives, and socialization, this study highlights the possibility of using negative sanctions, such as punishment, to influence network members’ opportunism. When punishment is properly applied, it can be a highly visible and effective tool to establish norms, govern acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, and boost productivity and satisfaction in a distribution network.

Prof. JJ Hsieh has a co-authored paper published in the September 2013 issue of Information Systems Research. The co-authors of his paper, entitled “Motivational Differences Across Post-Acceptance Information System Usage Behaviors: An Investigation in the Business Intelligence Systems Context”, are Dr Xixi Li of Tsinghua University and Prof. Arun Rai of Georgia State University.

Abstract

Organizations are increasing their investments in business intelligence systems (BIS) to support business analysts who are challenged to derive managerial insights from Big Data to support strategic planning and decision making. Unfortunately, while some analysts use the implemented BIS to its fullest potential, most of them only apply BIS in a routine manner, thereby preventing organizations from realizing the often touted benefits from BIS. To address this issue, this study examines why business analysts use implemented BIS in such different manners. Based on data from 193 business analysts using BIS at one of the largest telecom service companies in China, we found that while external motivations for work efficiency and effectiveness drive analysts’ routine use of BIS, internal motivations for growth and enjoyment stimulate analysts’ innovative use of BIS. We further found the effect of internal motivations on innovative BIS use is stronger/weaker for those who are more/less innovative toward IT innovations.

Prof. Xu Huang has a co-authored paper published in the November 2013 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology. The co-authors of his paper, entitled “When My Supervisor Dislikes You More Than Me: The Effect of Dissimilarity in Leader-member Exchange on Coworkers’ Interpersonal Emotion and Perceived Help”, are Dr Herman Tse of Griffith University, Dr Catherine Lam of the City University of Hong Kong, and Dr Sandra Lawrence of Griffith University.

Abstract

Managers tend to develop dif ferent levels of work relationships with dif ferent subordinates. Some subordinates are treated as in-group members by managers, and others are treated as out-group members. Real world experience and scientific research conducted in the last 40 years have suggested that employees who have

in-group member status tend to receive more support and resources from their managers, and enjoy better career development. However, we argue and show in this study that managers’ differential treatments of their subordinates are likely to harm the interpersonal interactions between the subordinates, which in turn undermine individual employees’ work performance. Using two independent samples and different research methods, we obtained consistent results to support our propositions. Also, the findings suggest that if managers want to reduce the detrimental effect of dissimilar supervisor-subordinate relationships developed in a work group, he/she should try to select employees who have low orientations of social comparison (do not habitually compare themselves with others) to the work group.

Prof. Xu Huang

Dr Wu Liu has a co-authored paper published in the September 2013 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology. The co-authors of his paper, entitled “The Relational Antecedents of Voice Targeted at Different Leaders”, are Dr Subrahmaniam Tangirala of the University of Maryland and Dr Rangaraj Ramanujam of Vanderbilt University.

Abstract

When an employee, say Jane, finds an idea to improve organisational effectiveness, will she speak up to her direct boss (direct leader), or her boss’s boss (skip-level leader)? In this article, we explore how employees select the target to share constructive suggestions to challenge the status-quo in organisations.

Using data from 237 employees and their direct and skip-level leaders, we found that (1) an employee was more likely to speak up to the direct leader when the quality of the dyadic relationship between the direct leader and the employee was good, and even more so when the relationship between the direct leader and the skip-level leader was stronger, and (2) an employee was also more likely to speak up to the skip-level leader when the quality of the dyadic relationship between the skip-level leader and the employee was good, but less so when the relationship between the direct leader and the skip-level leader was stronger. In other words, when selecting to whom to speak up, an employee would consider the triangle relationships among the employee, the direct leader, and the skip-level leader.

News & Events from the Centre for Leadership & Innovation (CLI)Since the last issue of the MM newsletter, there have been several exciting developments within the Centre for Leadership & Innovation (CLI). First of all, we are pleased to announce the opening of the new CLI office in M1009 of Li Ka Shing Tower. With the extra space and facilities for meeting and teamwork, the new office represents an important milestone in our efforts to promote and support a culture of collegiality, leadership and innovative collaboration in MM.

Secondly, we have expanded our internal connections and expertise by inviting new members and a Co-director into the centre. Prof. Jason Shaw, Chair Professor of Management in MM, assumed Co-directorship of the CLI in September 2013. In the same month, Prof. JJ Hsieh, Dr Bonnie Cheng, and Dr Vivian Guo also joined CLI as core members. CLI has already hosted two monthly brown bag meetings to share and discuss research ideas and insights. Our third meeting was held on 28 February 2014.

Dr Warren Chiu, Co-director of CLI, successfully obtained two external funds in 2013. One such fund was granted by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) to conduct research on ethical leadership. An agreement on this collaborative research was signed by Dr Chiu and Dr Michael Lam, Chief Executive Officer of HKQAA, in November 2013. The other funded project involves collaboration with The University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China, to conduct a year-long study on coworking spaces. Dr Chiu and his teammates have obtained support from the managers of various coworking spaces in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Interviews have been conducted with young and promising entrepreneurs early this year, and an extensive longitudinal study will subsequently be conducted.
