Dear 5K Participants, Sponsors & Spectators, On behalf of the Girls on the Run of Union County staff and board, we would like to thank you for your support of our organization. We are excited to have around 1,300 runners (~2,500 people including spectators) participating in our 2018 spring 5K. The Girls on the Run 5K is the culminating event for the spring season of Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run participants, families, friends, coaches, sponsors and community members come together to participate in the celebratory 5K. This 5K is noncompetitive and perfect for all runners, joggers, and walkers. Proceeds from the event will benefit Girls on the Run of Union County so that all girls who wish to participate will have the opportunity, regardless of their financial circumstances. Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The curriculum creatively incorporates training for a 5K with lessons that encourage 3rd through 8th grade girls to develop essential life skills. Crossing the finish line at the 5K gives girls a tangible sense of the confidence that comes with accomplishing a goal. It is our hope that this information packet will provide you with event details to enhance your experience. With gratitude, Bonnie Grote, Lani Koontz and Kellen Williams Girls on the Run of Union County

Participants can register for the Girls on the Run 5K online at www.girlsontherununion.org, in person at packet pickup on Friday, April 27th or at the event before the start of the 5K. Cash only for in-person registration! The registration fee is $25 before April 1st and $30 April 1st-April 28th.

Girls on the Run program participants are already registered for the 5K. They do NOT need to register separately and will not need to pick up anything at Packet

Pickup. GOTR Coaches will receive all of the girls’ 5K items.

5K packets will be available to pick up at Carolinas HealthCare System-Waxhaw Community Room (2700 Providence Road South, Waxhaw, NC 28173) on Friday, April 27th from 3:00-7:00pm. Packets will also be available at the Packet Pickup tent across from the registration table at the 5K.

Be prepared to run in any weather! The event will go on rain or shine. The police will determine if we will have a delayed start if we experience lightning prior to the beginning of the 5K start. We do not have a weather makeup date. The girls should wear their MINT GREEN Girls on the Run of Union County 5K shirt. We highly encourage each Girls on the Run team to be creative and show their Girls on the Run spirit with some team unity items. Examples include: unique hats, socks, shoelaces, tutus, etc. Encourage your family members, friends and running buddies to show off their spirit as well! We will have a raffle with the grand prize a Trek bicycle. Tickets will be for sale at Packet Pickup on April 27th and on the morning of the 5K at the Girls on the Run tent. The winner will be announced after all participants have completed the 5K.

No pets are allowed at the event.

Line up on the start line according to your pace. Faster runners should be to be in

the front with slower runners/walkers behind. Runners with strollers should start in the

back.

REMEMBER TO PACE YOURSELF! Resist the urge to go too fast at the beginning.

Start slower so you have more energy and finish strong.

Make sure shoelaces are securely tied! If you have to stop to retie laces, please

move aside so no one trips over you.

Move to the right side if someone behind you says “Excuse me” or “Coming through”.

When passing, call out "passing on your left" and then pass on the left. Be aware of who

may be behind you before changing course. Stay to the right on the course, leaving

room for passing runners.

If running with a group, don't block the entire path.

If you need to slow down or stop for any reason don’t do it until you’ve moved to

the side, out of people’s way, so people behind you won’t have to swerve around you.

When you get to the water station slow down to hydrate, and be sure to thank the

volunteers! Grab water from the table or outstretched hand of a volunteer and keep

moving. Move to the side of the course if you want to stop and drink water.

At the finish line, don’t stop suddenly or cut off other runners. Keep moving

through and head down to Vendor Village.

Don't forget to say thanks to the volunteers along the way!

Due to safety reasons, pets are not permitted.

Don’t forget to stretch after the race, it’s very important. This will save you from being

sore & stiff the next couple of days.

Stay positive, be encouraging, have FUN!
