OverviewOn the 27th November Sutton 1 in 4 Network hosted a one-day event to explore how to promote mental and emotional wellbeing in Sutton through collaboration and co-production. The event aimed to:

Identify community assets and resources in Sutton that could be shared and developed, which enable Sutton to be a place where wellbeing thrives.

Provide a connecting space for people to start to explore how they could work collaboratively and co-productively to improve the quality of life of people of Sutton.

Five ways to wellbeing1

Connect…

With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be Active…

Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take Notice…

Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

Keep Learning…

Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Give…

Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

Identifying community assets and resources in Sutton

Participants worked together to identify assets and resources in Sutton which support the 5 ways to wellbeing, as well as resources which respond to crises and help people to achieve goals. Groups looked at six different categories of assets:

Individuals Associations Organisations Physical Economic Cultural

The results of the mapping work will be available online shortly at suttonwellbeingnetwork.co.uk.

Exploring how we can work collaboratively and co-productively

The group identified a number of key topics to discuss:

Information Navigation Timebanking Reducing stigma Operations Access

Information

Main questions posed:

How will we share information and knowledge? Can we set up a website? How will we piece together a directory of services? How will we ensure the information is kept up to date? How will we identify overlap between different resources? Where should we put information?

Main points of discussion:

People can get too reliant on one place to search for information or one signposting service. Need to co-ordination information between all agencies to provide an accurate and

consistent resource. Agencies need to take personal responsibility for being aware of services available in Sutton

and develop a common signposting protocol. Develop ways of getting information from people and neighbourhoods, rather than ‘pushing’

information onto them. There can be too much information produced and people can get information overload.

People need access to right information. It would be helpful to have central database, but the focus needs to be individual contact to

signpost people to services. Hold a quarterly meeting to update agencies and people on news and events. Cannot just rely on the internet to transfer information and knowledge, need to use other

methods, such as flyers, as well.

Recommendations and next steps:

Build on existing information resources and databases between agencies. Share information and develop collective knowledge which can be easily transferred.

Recovery College Our Sutton website Sutton Mental Health Foundation Sutton Carers Centre GPs and chemists could provide more information

Develop a website with interactive maps (see suttonwellbeingnetwork.co.uk)

Develop an online platform for members of the Sutton Wellbeing Network to share knowledge and publicise events

Navigation

Main questions posed:

How will we support people to navigate the Network of assets and resources? Is there a role for peers and volunteers to signpost and navigate people to resources? Do we do enough to pass people onto opportunities that we don’t offer ourselves?

Main points of discussion:

It would be useful to have a centralised telephone number for people to contact for navigation support.

Rely on word of mouth to transfer knowledge of community resources. Role of outreach workers and community social work team to signpost people to community

resources. Need to reach outside of mental health and provide community wellbeing options for people. Peer Navigation and Community Health Champions

Recommendations and next steps:

Sutton Mental Health Foundation are training Peer Navigators. These people could support others to navigate and access wellbeing resources.

Explore the options for developing a centralised telephone number.

Timebanking

Main questions posed:

What is Timebanking? How would a Timebank work? How will we fund a Timebank? What will engage people and hold their trust?

Main points of discussion:

Timebanks are a good way to share our skills and make a contribution to others wellbeing in terms of time and skills.

Page 7: event f…  · Web viewDanny McCann. Belmont Drop-in. Peter Williams. Belmont Drop-in. David Jarrett. SWLSTG. Sandra Amalakumar. ... Rely on word of …

People need to be willing give time back not just access skills on offer. People will need to be committed for a Timebank to work.

A Timebank can help reduce social isolation There are two options for a Timebank: one to one between people or a Timebank between

organisations Previously attempts didn’t work effectively in Sutton as they were being run on a voluntary

basis. We would need paid resources to run a timebank. Would the local authority fund this? The Timebank could be explored with GPs and primary care as well

Recommendations and next steps:

Find out how Timebanks operate in other places

Increase awareness of the possibility of a Timebank and see if people in Sutton like the idea

Sutton 1 in 4 Network will be hosting an event to explore the scope for a Timebank in Sutton in January.

Reducing stigma

Main questions posed:

Is there a role for the Network to reduce discrimination and stigma in Sutton? How would the Network do this? What projects and initiatives could we support?

Main points of discussion:

Yes, there is a role for the Network in reducing discrimination and stigma in Sutton. We could develop an inclusive statement. Publicising the network well will help to reduce stigma.

Recommendations and next steps:

Write an inclusive statement for the Network.

Operations

Main questions posed:

How will the Network operate?

Main points of discussion:

The network needs to operate without too many meetings. Develop an online forum with closed groups to share knowledge and ideas.

Set up a Sutton Wellbeing Network steering group with delegated individuals. Develop two types of membership: membership for Network facilitators / partners and open

access memberships for people. Both no cost.

Page 8: event f…  · Web viewDanny McCann. Belmont Drop-in. Peter Williams. Belmont Drop-in. David Jarrett. SWLSTG. Sandra Amalakumar. ... Rely on word of …

Link to Foundation Trust membership. Organise bespoke meetings when required, focused on particular subjects and projects. Develop joint agreements. Value individual orgainsations own agenda. Organise bespoke events and facilitate more connecting spaces to share and learn. Develop links to neighbouring boroughs, such as Croydon and Merton. Develop economies of costs and ways to share resources. Develop a set of common principles. Value what we already do and share information about wellbeing with people.

Recommendations and next steps:

Set up a steering group. Set up an online forum, such as Meetup.com or UserVoice. Link to Health and Wellbeing Structure. Avoid having too many meetings.

Access

Main questions posed:

How will people access the Network? How will we define our target audience(s)? How will we ensure people can access the network and resources?

Main points of discussion:

Aspire for quick and open access. Map service access points: such as A&E, Social Services referral Conduct active outreach work Use GIS mapping to build up a picture of deprivation and target areas in Sutton Value word of mouth Develop a co-operation protocol between agencies Ensure information regarding access is available. Develop a single ‘assessment’ for all services. Network logo. Reach out to other agencies and community groups

Recommendations and next steps:

Explore the possibility for a single wellbeing number people can use for advice and signposting.

Develop community wellbeing hubs in Sutton. Develop online information portal.
