1 Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce

Guest editorial

City of Richland - Open for BusinessBy Cindy Reents, City Manager, City of Richland

Despite cold temperatures, record breaking snowfall, and countless weather delays, at the City of Richland we welcome the coming year and maintain a positive economic outlook for 2017!

No doubt, challenging weather conditions affect commerce. Combined with the transition of our national administration, and wavering consumer confidence, now more than ever we recognize the importance of steadfast support of businesses in Richland and beyond. We are proud of our partnerships with surrounding agencies and organizations who share likeminded awareness that promoting business and industry in the Tri-Cities is a team effort. We are also proud to be members of the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce and will continue to share the value of Chamber membership with our business community.

In 2017, Richland will continue to prioritize economic development. We will maintain momentum on several efforts including the development of the Swift Ave. Corridor. With the recent completion of the Kadlec tower expansion and parking structure, progress on the new CBC facility, and our plans to break ground on the new Richland City Hall, this area continues to be a vital corridor in central Richland. We anticipate further opportunity for commercial development that will contribute to our vibrant, walkable, and accessible waterfront.

Continuing progress on the Duportail Bridge remains a priority. With the completion of the Duportail Extension and design nearly complete for the Duportail Bridge, this important piece of infrastructure will be essential to linking South Richland to our waterfront. We are pleased to have retailers continue to express interest in the Queensgate area and look forward to our 2017 traffic improvements that will assist in accommodating the growth.

With the acquisition of lands from DOE this past year, our efforts to promote large parcels of property in North Richland remain a priority. We anticipate expansions at Preferred Freezer and Lamb Weston and look forward to other large manufacturers choosing to call Richland home.

We’ll continue progress on updating our Comprehensive Plan – join us for our next public open house on March 20th. You can review draft recommendations and provide input on planning for Richland’s future.

I am proud of the strong leadership team we have at the City of Richland. My colleagues and I are excited to have a dedicated and enthusiastic Business & Economic Development Office ready to assist you. We have recently updated our online business portal for current and prospective businesses. Here you will find a bevy of information you may need to plan, start, operate, or grow your business. I encourage you to visit the portal and take advantage of the many resources available.

Stay tuned for news regarding convenient, mobile business hours with this team, regular distribution of Richland Business News, and continued participation in important community initiatives. Have a great 2017!

6Monthly V.O.I.C.E. of Business | February 2017 Printed and designed by:

Join us for February’s Business After Hours with the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday, February 15 from 5-7 pm! Free to attend, this event will provide a laidback networking environment followed by a fun night of hockey! Light appetizers and lemonade will be provided and a no-host bar will be available from 5:30-7 pm in the Charter Spectrum Lounge. Every Tri-City Regional Chamber Member in attendance will receive one free ticket to the game later that night when Americans take on the Red Deer Rebels at 7 pm.

When the Tri-City Americans first took the ice in 1988, it was the start of a Tri-Cities sports tradition. Over the last 29 years, millions of fans have experienced the excitement of the Americans hockey. “Hockey……here? In the desert?” This was a common response in the Columbia Basin as area residents learned that the WHL’s New Westminster Bruins would be relocated to the Tri-Cities for the 1988-1989 season. With the team came the brisk construction of a new, multi-purpose venue that would serve as—and remains—the team’s home ice. Tri-City Americans hockey was a rousing success, with near nightly sellouts through the first several seasons. Over the years, numerous Americans players have made the move to the NHL and become household names for hockey fans worldwide. Players like Olie Kolzig, Stu Barnes, Daymond Langkow, Scott Gomez, Carey Price and Brandon Carlo got their start right here in the Tri-Cities.
