...continued from front cover

language seems to be influenced greatly by this proximity. Hence the pronunciation... Bar-thuh-lone-ah, spo-ken almost as if with a lisp.

Barcelona is an ancient seaport on the Balearic Sea whose name is suppos-edly derived from a Carthaginian family by the name of Barca. As a port city, Barcelona has long been connected to a myriad of cultures and peoples. North-ern Africa is within a few days sailing, therefore you’ll find a hint of Arabic in-fluence. The Romans certainly left their mark on the city. So did the Visigoths.

Throughout this region there are castles and bridges, aqueducts and ancient struc-tures that reflect the influential powers of these invading forces. The arts and culture all bear unmistakable marks from this multinational impact creating what many believe to be the rarest gem in the Span-ish crown Barcelona. She’s an intellectual center that wears the proud patina of time.

A Look at the CityThe proper way to approach Barcelona

is by ship, as did the ancients so very long ago. The bustling harbor is usually alive with cruise ships, brightly-painted fishing boats pulling their daily catch from the transparent ink-blue waters, and sleek white pleasure crafts awash with deck hands who polish the brass chandlery to a shimmering glow.

The Passeig de Colom is the water-front area that is alive with activity, day and night. The pace may cause you to retreat to the wide, suitable-for-strolling boulevard known as Las Ramblas. This tree-lined path runs from the waterfront all the way up to the Plaça de Catalu-nya. Flower stalls with their brilliant bouquets, bird vendors with cages of canaries and doves, comfortable benches lined with gossiping women and doz-

ing leather-faced men, all decorate this promenade like a painter’s canvas. Life changes very little on Las Ramblas.

If you’re a fan of Antoni Gaudí, an architectural enthusiast, or simply an ad-mirer of daydreams that have sprung to life, visit nearby Plaça Reial to see Gaudí’s lampposts. Gaudí was a turn-of-the-cen-tury architect with a fancy for fantasy, a lighthearted visionary of art nouveau. His works resemble those mysterious-looking castles you created as a child by dropping crystals into a fish bowl.

Antoni Gaudí lived for 74 years before being struck down by a tram in front of his famous Sagrada Família Church. You mustn’t miss the Sagrada Família (Church of the Holy Family), for it is his most ambitious and famous work. Over 550 feet tall, it is still under con-struction. The church resembles a child’s giant sandcastle made by dripping sand through clenched fists, drip by colorful drip, until the sandcastle reached the sky. Then it was dusted with magical speckles of color to create a kaleido-scope of towers, buttresses, gargoyles and serpent-like arches.

Your meanderings about the city should also include a stroll through the Gothic Barri. Slip into the silent naves of the Ca-thedral de Santa Eulalia with its magnifi-cent Catalan Gothic interior. Stand in the washed glow of the 500-year old stained glass window before taking in the rich religious paintings and sculptures housed in the nearby Cathedral Museum. Barcelona’s Masters

The women are absolutely gorgeous, the scenery is dramatic, the food superb, and Barcelona’s weather is as gentle as a caress. No wonder the world’s finest art-ists paused here to capture some or all of

the above.Among those masters were Pablo

Picasso, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. The Picasso Museum in Palau d’Aguilar on Carrer Montcada houses some of the artist’s most interesting early work. The Museum of Modern Art displays pieces by such Catalan painters as Casas, Nonell and Sert. You’ll find excellent examples of these artists’ work in the Museum of Catalonian Art and the Miró Foundation, two of the four museums atop Montjuïc. Here, at one of Barcelona’s highest points, you’ll also find the site of the 1992 Sum-mer Olympic Games and the Spanish Village, which was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition.

Barcelona is such a magnificent city you’ll be tempted to fling your passport into the Balearic and order a dish of tasty paella, the wonderful seafood-and-rice dish kissed with Spanish saffron. Add a splash of local wine, a bowl of chilled fruit, and simply allow your day to ease gently by.

As the warm afternoon sun lays softly on your shoulders raise a glass with your friends to celebrate this, the glorious city of Bar-thuh-lone-ah.

Hubert Gesser Brings Color to The World, One Gemstone at a Time

Hubert Inc. primarily serves customers in the United States, although one third of its busi-ness is abroad. The company’s range is vast, accommodating the desires of a broad range

of retailers, enthusiasts, and collectors with quality gem-set jewelry that provides great value at every price level offered.

For nearly 25 years, Hubert Gesser has traveled the globe in search of nature’s most beautiful treasures. Throughout Africa, South America, the Far East and further, Hubert looks for the best the world has to offer in a spectrum of gemstones from classic blue sapphire to exotic Paraiba tour-malines.

Brazilian born and raised Hubert came to the United States when he was 18-years-old, attending the University of California, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree for mechanical engineering. For about a year, he worked for a manufacturer producing aerospace and prototype missile

parts, managing a 60-member staff. But when Hubert met someone who travelled the world importing gems, he decided without hesitation, to invest his then entire net worth into loose gemstones which he could resell and distribute. This decision inspired a career change that he would build into a successful gem lapidary house and jewelry manufacturing company known today as Hubert Inc.

Hubert quickly learned how to develop a keen eye for beautiful color in both the most commonly known gems like amethyst, to rarities like natural color cherry topaz and alexan-drite. Moreover, he soon realized that more clients wanted finished jewelry, motivating him to build his skills as a designer and surround himself with expert cutters, goldsmiths and wax carvers to get the job done in his L.A. based studio. Eventually he learned firsthand the art of buying and faceting rough as well as the intricacies of handcrafting fine jewelry.

Although gemstones and jewelry seem like a far cry from his background in engineering, Hubert notes that his field of study gives him strength in problem solving, which has served him well, particularly when it comes to custom designs that account for more than 50 percent of his business. In addition to the beauty in the gems he sources, Hubert has remained fascinated by the interesting people he meets in the business, from artisan miners in the backcountry of Brazil, to regular jewelry connoisseurs, to royalty such as the Queen of Spain. The stories surrounding these gemstones build a lifetime of memories and symbolism for anyone who comes in contact with them.

All of Hubert’s designs are artistically and meticulously constructed, from fun fashion pieces, to one-of-a-kind designs. He is one of the few jewelers involved in every aspect of jewelry making. Although Hubert is the principal designer for the brand, the company also retains two additional designers on staff. “For me, the most inspiring pieces are the ones I do collaboratively with my private clients.”

Join us in Facets and view the fine jewelry collections from Hubert Gems.

Shipboard credits may be applied to all retail purchases.

Connoisseur BeersWe have added yet another layer of quality to the onboard experience with our collection of vintage, specially curated beers available on our optional Connois-seur Beer list.

Unlike traditional, mass-produced beers that are subject to pasteurization and filtration to extend shelf life, vintage beers contain active yeast and actually improve over time. Like fine wines, beers that have not been through the typical brewing process are often suitable for “laying down” – being stored in a cool, dark place for aging. Beer enthusiasts have embraced this relatively new practice and are seeking out rare brews to enjoy.

Select from an assortment of aged and limited production ales, stouts, ciders and other artisanal brews from Belgium, England, the United States, Austria and more.

Our Bar Staff are pleased to assist you with selections from our Connoisseur Beer list. Connoisseur Beers available on this voyage include:

• Schneider Aventinus, Germany

• Rochefort Trappistes, Belgium

• Fullers Vintage Ale 2012, England

Some things just belong together: Earth and Moon, Sherlock and Watson, milk and

cookies. Now there's another perfect pairing that is sure to delight: Lunch and Lecture,

an enriching new event at the Vintage Room.

Located between the Library and Silk Road on the port side of Promenade Deck 7 Aft,

our intimate Vintage Room was created to promote wine education and showcase the

fine wine selections offered on board during occasional daytime wine tastings and

wine-themed dinners.

Now you can enjoy this enriching experience during a special Lunch and Lecture on

Saturday, November 9, at 11:45am in the Vintage Room.

Remember that incredible almond-crusted sole sautéed in butter you savored at that

cozy bistro in Paris? Or the time you discovered the perfect grilled lamb at an off-the-

beaten-path restaurant in Tuscany? Such exquisite dining moments usually arise from

the artful marriage of food and wine. But knowing which wine to pair with your meal

is an acquired skill, and our Lunch and Lecture event is designed to shed light on a

specific wine region as you enjoy a perfectly paired, savory multi-course menu.

Don't know a chardonnay from a pinot noir? No problem. Our Head Sommelier is

a highly trained expert happy to introduce you to the joy of wine appreciation with

an interactive and entertaining presentation where you'll start to cultivate your own

understanding of wine's delicious nuances. During your lunch, he will share fascinating

wine insights, offering complete tasting notes and explaining the unique properties of

the vintages with each course.

There is a nominal fee of $125 per guest for this exclusive Lunch and Lecture experience.

For more information or to reserve your place at the event, please contact Head Sommelier

Tilmar Pfefferkorn via the Reception Desk.

MEET THE FITNESS DIRECTORS

Fitness Director Viktor MartinViktor was born in Hungary, a small country in the heart of Europe. He showed interest in sports since he was a child and

competed in many athletic events during his school years, whether it was basketball, soccer, swimming, Judo, boxing, rowing or triathlon. Later he graduated as an Economist and spent a few years in the financial field.

During these years he experienced how hard it is to maintain a healthy life. His lower back suffered from the office clerk’s sedentary lifestyle. After finding a remedy in functional trainings and

other exercises, he turned from athletic sports to fitness trainings and started to popularize them among the office employees. Viktor soon realized he felt more meaningful if he could help the general population to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

He quit his job and went to Sydney, Australia, to study at the Australian College of Sports and Fitness where he obtained Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer qualification. During his years in Sydney, Viktor focused on the general population working in the Central Business District. He concentrated his personal training services on fat loss, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Viktor also worked as an Instructor at Fitness First Australia. He is very proud that he worked in Australia’s most visited gyms. His popular classes combined the benefits of HIIT, functional training, metabolic conditioning and exercises inspired by athletic sports.

Viktor’s passion is to educate people about Exercising, Nutrition, Detoxification and Posture – how we can live a better, longer, healthier and happier life. “I don’t share the old “No Pain No Gain” dogma. I believe everybody should enjoy exercising. I want all the people to have fun while they are achieving a healthy, fit lifestyle. We all have the power to change our lives.”

Viktor shares his knowledge at free seminars and classes. His energy creates a fun environment during the Cycling, Yoga, Pilates, Conditioning and Stretching classes.

Watch Reflections for their fitness classes and seminars throughout the cruise.

Shipboard credits may be applied to all retail purchases.

Fitness Director Julian FuchsJulian is from Munich, Germany. His passion is to motivate

people and to push them to their limits. For Julian, it is the best

feeling if his clients leave the gym

with a smile.

Julian has been in the health,

fitness and nutrition industry for

the past seven years. He started his

apprenticeship in 2010 and received

different licences, including nutri-

tion, detoxification, posture analysis,

strength and conditioning, as well

as a diploma as a sport and health

trainer. After three years apprenticeship, he worked four years

for the same company as a personal trainer. Julian wanted

more, he wanted to see more of the world, see other countries,

experience other cultures and to train these people, with the

same results as in Germany; to see them smile after helping

them. He also wanted to speak English fluently and possibly other

languages. Julian wanted to grow from the experience. His motto

is “If you have fun with something, then you take it serious.“

He has been involved in sports his entire life and has tried every-

thing, but his passions are tennis and skiing. Julian played tennis

for 17 years, but after starting the apprenticeship, he stopped.

He has been skiing for 20 years and has competed as an

athlete in the sport for two years. He discovered a new passion;

dancing. He learned Shuffle and Hip Hop in a dancing school

for a short time, because of his work in the gym. He learned

dancing for himself and used a lot of time to become better. In

the gym he trains 3-5 times per week for more than an hour to

keep his body fit and healthy.

In his free time, he enjoys time with his friends, dancing in

clubs, watching movies and listening to music. His family lives in

Salzburg, Austria, and he has a little brother with an age differ-

ence of 20 years.

less networks, the SeaMobile system will

only be available when the ship is at least

12 nautical miles from land. When in port,

you can connect to local roaming networks,

as permitted by your home carrier.

You may use your mobile phone in most

areas on board. However, the following

areas have been designated as quiet

zones where service will not be available:
