At Eveleth-Gilbert Public Schools we are thrilled to announce the
beginning of Phase Two of our 1-1 iPad Implementation Program!
This fall, students in grades 6-9 will be issued a district owned iPad
for their use during the school year. The Technology Committee has
been working hard to prepare our district and staff for this roll out.
We will do our best to help guide students, families, and school staff
through this exciting new program.
During the first weeks of school, parents and guardians of students
in grades 6-9 will be asked to attend a parent information session on
the iPads and the uses and responsibilities we will expect of our
students. Information will be presented on how the district will be
supervising the content on the iPads, the uses of new Technology
Fee for students in those grades, and on how the iPads may be used
in classrooms. We will be detailing how these iPads can be used by
both students and their parents or guardians to enhance learning
and access resources from home. We expect that parents and
students will have numerous questions that can be answered by
reviewing the iPad Handbook and attending the information
session. The iPad Handbook will be distributed at the parent meet-
ing, but is also already available for you to review online by visiting
the district website or by using the QR code in this newsletter.
We understand that we have many households who do not have
internet access for a variety of reasons and have taken steps to ensure
that this will not hinder student’s use of this tool during the year. Stu-
dents will have wireless access at school and will be able to download
any content they need while there. Parents and their students may
find that there are a number of area businesses and agencies that offer
free access at their sites (the public libraries for instance).
We are pleased to be able to offer our students this tool. Students in
grades 10-12 will be included next year. We have also purchased iPad
minis for use in the K-5 classrooms, including classroom sets of five and
full carts available for teachers to check out for whole-class use. Stu-
dents will have new tools at their fingertips that will transform their
learning experiences in many ways. We look forward to learning new
things with our students and from our students this school year!

of excitement that is always

are anxious to find out whom

year and if any of their
friends will be in their classes.
Fall sports and activities have
just started or will be starting
in the near future and
students are excited and
happy to be participating in
these activities. There is a lot
of laughter and chatter in the
locker rooms and on the
fields, courts, and in the
pools. Teachers have
returned to their classrooms
preparing for the students
who will soon walk through
the school doors. There is a
lot of chatter and laughter
shared among them also as
they prepare for the new
school year. I love the sound
of teachers and students as
they return to school. I find
their excitement and
enthusiasm to be very
rewarding and contagious.

whether it is attending an
athletic event, a play, and a
band or choir concert. The

EVELETH-GILBERT SCHOOLS WELCOME NEW STAFF
My name is Jeff Isaacson and I am a 2001 graduate of Mesabi East High School. I attended college at Bemidji State and UW-Superior earning degrees in Chemistry, Science Education, and Educational Administration. I have enjoyed working in the Eveleth-Gilbert District for the past five years a substitute teacher and homebound instructor. I have spent a great amount of my time in the sport of curling. I have been competing
since I was 13 years old. I have a couple of state and national championships and a World University Games gold medal. I was also a member of the 2010 Olympic Team. Curling has given me many opportunities to do what I love most-travel. I was known on a first name basis at the airport and logged thousands of miles on hundreds of flights across the US and Canada as well as 10 trips overseas. I have visited most of the countries of Europe and even traveled as far away as South Korea. I believe so much can be gained from travel and world experiences and always encourage others to get away and see the world if they have the opportunity. I look forward to working with the great staff and students at Eveleth-Gilbert. Go Bears!

Betzolt and I will be the

teacher this school year.
I am originally from Chicago,
but have lived many places
throughout the years where I
have had the opportunity to
work in a variety of professional
fields. I serve on multiple state
and national Business Education boards that have provided a
variety of enriching experiences to represent Business Educa-
tion on a global level. I received my training from North Park
University and Winona State University and look forward to
instilling in our students applicable job ready skills for the 21st
century workplace. I am very excited for the upcoming school

3 AUGUST 2013 Volunteers in Education (VinE) Comes to Eveleth-Gilbert
The onset of the school year is a time of exciting new beginnings for both students and staff — new classes, new faces, and new learning experi-encing. Another exciting new addition for the Eveleth-Gilbert School District for the 2013-2014 school year is par-ticipation in the Volun-teers in Education (VinE) program, a non-profit organization that started its efforts in 2009 of
providing volunteer assistance to teachers and students at various sites in the St. Louis County School System. The program’s measured success has resulted in and allowed for its further expansion into other school districts this year, including Eveleth-Gilbert and Nett Lake.
VinE’s mission is to connect communities with their local schools and to assist teachers and staff in promoting success for their students. When communities take ownership by volunteering in their local schools, their students benefit in many ways. Volunteering in the schools can take a variety of forms. Assisting students with readiness learning activities, practicing their reading skills or helping with math problems one-on-one or in small groups, answering their homework questions, and even something as simple as being a caring presence in a classroom when needed are all ways that volunteers can make a difference in students’ lives and help them to succeed.
Ann Voss, former teacher and thirty-four year veteran of the Eveleth-Gilbert School District has been identified as this year’s VinE coordinator. The VinE program will be implemented in grades K-8 this school year. “It’s a privilege for me to be this year’s VinE coordinator. I’m looking forward to being a part of this very beneficial program.” As coordinator, her job will be to recruit and organize volunteers, match volunteers with teachers who wish to have some extra assis-tance in their classrooms, utilize volunteers when available for afterschool homework help where none is currently available, and assist staff with volunteer needs as they arise.
Maxine Perko, former Franklin Elementary teacher and thirty year veteran of the district will be implementing the SMART ) Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) Program at the Franklin Elementary through the VinE program. SMART is a developmental approach designed to provide younger elementary students with a series of activities that combine brain and motor skill coordination to help prepare them for learning. Once these readiness skills are in place, children have the necessary tools to be able to enhance their ability to become lifelong learners.
“It’s exciting to have the VinE program as part of the Eveleth-Gilbert School District this year, stated Voss. “We are encouraging individuals who have an hour or two a week, or even a couple hours a month to consider being a volunteer to assist our teachers and students.” Feel free to contact Ann Voss at 218-749-8585 or [email protected] if you are interested in sharing your time or have any questions regarding the VinE Program.

Hi, my name is Karen Rogotzke,
and I will be the school
counselor at the junior high and
a social studies teacher at the
high school and junior high.
Before moving to the Iron
Range, I lived in the south
central part of the state. I grew
up on an elk farm outside of
Fairfax, MN and later moved to
St. Peter to study Secondary Education at Gustavus. I went on
to graduate school at the Minnesota Sate University, Mankato
and got a degree in Professional School Counseling.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with friends and
family, running, traveling, and touring museums. I am very
excited to start working with the Eveleth-Gilbert staff and
students! I look forward to meeting everyone and having an
awesome school year!
My name is Mandy Brunfelt
and I am excited to be the new
6th grade teacher at Eveleth-
Gilbert Schools.
A little background about
myself. I have been in the teach-
ing field for about 20 years,
taking some time off to be a stay
-at-home mom.
For the past five years, I have been very busy being a
substitute teacher. I am looking forward to having my own
classroom this year and can’t wait to meet the students at
Nelle Shean.
I live outside of Aurora with my husband, our 9th grade
son, our 6th grade daughter, and dog Maggie.

SCHOOL SUPPLY INFORMATION FOR JR. HIGH STUDENTS & PARENTS
Students at Eveleth-Gilbert Junior High need to work with their parents/guardians to determine the best way for them to keep their materials organized. This process will be different for each student, but organization is CRITICAL—so make a plan and purchase what you need. Be prepared to make changes if what you’re doing isn’t working and you’re losing
assignments or coming to class unprepared. Don’t overdo it. Sometimes less is more—fewer folders and notebooks mean you have less to keep track of. Purchase extra supplies in the fall when they are less expensive so you can refresh yours if they run out or become damaged.
Locker organizers can be helpful, but they can also create more of a mess to contend with and may prevent the locker from opening or closing. Students are not allowed to put stickers on lockers. Magnets are allowed inside, but tape and stickers are prohibited.
School supplies can become expensive, especially for those with multiple children. Any families who have difficulty for any reason purchasing supplies should contact the principal, counselor, secretary, or any other staff member. We have some supplies on hand that we can provide, no questions asked!
Teachers at Eveleth-Gilbert Junior High will hand out a syllabus at the beginning of the year that may list items not included here. This list, and the elective course supply lists do not include information from all courses or teachers. This list is created to help you get started gathering materials for the 2013-2014 school year.
All students in grades 7 and 8 will need the following supplies for their required courses:
1. No planners are required this year as students will be using their iPads for organization.
2. Pencils (lots of them, with good erasers—mechanical pencils are fine)
3. Pens
4. Scientific calculator
5. Notebooks (1 designated especially for English—80 page)
6. Binders—some classes have required sizes
7. Loose leaf paper
8. Folders (the sturdier the better)
9. Paper grocery bags to cover books
10. Colored pencils
11. Glue sticks
12. Hand held pencil sharpener
Students in Physical Education will need the following: combination lock, athletic tennis shoes (not skateboard shoes), t-shirt, shorts and/or sweats.
Students enrolled in the following elective courses will need:
Family and Consumer Science/FACS: one inch 3-ring binder, loose leaf paper. 8th grade FACS students will also need: $5.75 for sewing materials, wire hanger, pin cushion and dressmaker pins (recommended but not required), magazines with food pictures (not required)
Art: pencils, erasers, hand held pencil sharpener, folder.
Orchestra: one inch 3-ring binder, hole reinforcement stickers, a tuner (iTuner is a free app for IPhone/IPod/iPad), extra set of strings (for students who own a full size instrument), a mute, all lesson books (7th grade Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Book 2 and Suzuki Volume 1. 8th grade Essential Technique 2000 Book 3, Suzuki Volume 2 or higher), Metronome, shoulder rest for vio-linists and violists, rock stop for cellists and bassists, folding music stand for home practice and performances outside of school, cleaning rag, pencil highlighter.

SIXTH GRADE: #2 pencils w/erasers, pens (blue, black, red), colored pencils/crayons, markers, glue sticks, calculator, ruler (metric and inch) pocket dictionary, five wide ruled spiral notebooks, scissors (adult size), two boxes Kleenex, dry erase markers, six quarter plastic storage box, highlighter, gym shoes (to be kept in school, head-phones or earbuds, $6 for folder system.
Checks should be made payable to Nelle Shean Activity Fund.
5th and 6th grade students will have lockers near the office for storing winter clothing, gym shoes, etc. Books will be kept in the classrooms. For this reason, we do not recommend purchasing locker storage accessories.

My name is Mary Fleetwood and

I live with my husband of 13 years
and my two children. We enjoy

I have worked in the Eveleth-Gilbert School District for two
full years now and am thrilled to be part of the amazing
team of educators here.
My name is Paul Brainard and I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Superior in 1993 and later attended St. Cloud State where I received my special education certification. I first started my teaching career in the Minneapolis school system teaching 3rd and 4th grade special education at the Riverwest Day Treatment School. I then taught
7th-12th grade special education in Hill City where I was the head baseball and assistant football coach for 12 years. I also taught for one year at Itaskin Juvenile Center. I am married to my wife Amy and we have three boys: Jack and Cole who are 13 and Conner who is nine. We also have two dogs Piper and Lucy. My boys and I enjoy hunting, fishing, and all types of sports. I am looking forward to teaching here at Eveleth-Gilbert Schools!

Welcome Back to School! Wow! Can you believe another year is about to start!
We are busy preparing the Franklin for teachers and students. The staff is eager to get back to what they love the most—working with kids. Our classrooms are shiny clean and getting prepared for new smiling faces.
Franklin Elementary is a great place to be! I believe that strong community -
school relationships are essential to academic success. Find any successful school and you will find parents and community members that are involved and supportive.
This year we will be bringing in Volunteers in Education, a group of dedicated individuals that are ready and willing to work with students and staff, and tutor students in need of additional support. This program will help our students excel both inside and outside of the classroom. I am excited to get the program started!
Our Open House will be on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from 4:00-5:00 PM, and all teachers and staff will be excited to meet you and welcome you into your new classroom.

not registered for school should register at the Franklin Elementary
Principal’s office prior to Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Breakfast
and lunch will be available for all students who choose to eat in the
cafeteria on the first day. Students who walk to school are
permitted to go home for lunch. All students will be

There are lots of new and exciting things going on for the coming year at the Gilbert Campus including a new principal. My name is Jeff Carey, I have spent the last 18 years in the St Louis County Schools as a teacher and principal and am excited for the opportunity to move to Eveleth-Gilbert! Also new to our school is Mrs. Mandy Brunfelt, 6th Grade Teacher, Mr. Paul Brainard, Elementary Special Education Teacher, Mr. Jeff Isaacson, Elementary and Junior High Science Teacher, and Ms. Karen Rogotzke, who will serve as
the new Jr. High Counselor and teach a class of 7th grade social studies.
As phase II of our iPad initiative, iPads will be distributed to every student in grades 6, 7, and 8 this year. We will be sending out more specific information in the coming weeks about iPad distribution including a mandatory parent meeting that will occur within the first couple weeks of school. We are very excited about the possibilities this opportunity is going to afford the students!
Open House for the Gilbert Campus is scheduled from 3:30 until 5:30 on Thursday, August 29th. Junior High students will be able to pick up their schedules, locker combinations, bus information, as well as student and parent passwords for Powerschool. This information will be distributed in the Media Center that night. All students will have the opportunity to tour the school and meet their teachers. Please join us on the 29th, we look forward to seeing everyone!

All Junior High students are required to report directly to their first period class on Tuesday, September 3rd. The first bell rings at 8:00 a.m. and students must be in their classrooms, ready to go, by 8:05. These first few days we do our best to help students adjust to their new schedules and get organ-ized. If your student is new to our school, or missed open house, they may pick up their schedule and locker information in the office any time after 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd.

I am so excited to welcome back our staff and families for another fantastic school year.
I am moving to the Senior High School after six years in Gilbert; first as the School Counselor and then as the Principal of the Nelle Shean and Junior High. Because of this experience I know almost all of the students currently in the high school. I know what great kids they are and
look forward to being a part of their senior high years.
The faculty and staff are hard at work preparing for a new year. You’ll find many updates and improvements have been completed over the summer. We have purchased iPads for students in grades 6-9 (with a plan to purchase iPads for students in grades 10-12 next year), new computers in the lab and for our teachers, new carpet in many rooms, and new flooring on the staircase near the office.
Jones Street improvements are due to be completed on the portion in front of the school by the end of August. Until that time, the entrance to the Senior High parking lot on Fayal Avenue has been opened. You may find it necessary to use this entrance on Open House night.
We have a lot of exciting events, new and returning, that we will do our best to keep you informed of this year. Please visit our website frequently for announcements and information. We encourage you to check your child’s grades in PowerSchool and stress the importance of attendance and participation. The PowerSchool app has not been set up for our school yet. If we are able to make the necessary changes, we will inform parents of the sign-on information and directions to download the app at that time.
There is always a lot of information coming home at the beginning of the year. Make sure you take some time to go through it completely to avoid confusion or issues later in the year.
I look forward to seeing you at Open House on August 27th from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and at many other games, concerts, and events. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns. My door is always open. I respond to emails quickly and that is often the best way to contact me. See you all soon!

EGHS Drama Presents THE WIZARD OF OZ
The yellow brick road leads to the Boardman Auditorium at Eveleth-Gilbert High School this fall. The Wizard of Oz, the stage adaptation of the popular MGM musical based on a story by Frank Baum, will feature Briona Currie (freshman) as
Dorothy, Christian VanOrsdel (sophomore) as the Scarecrow, Quinn Muhich (7th grader) as the Tin Man, Mason Isaacson (junior) as the Cowardly Lion, and Jaimie Maki (senior) as the Wicked Witch. The rest of the large cast is made up of students in grades 5 through 12, along with a few elementary students as Munchkins.
The show will be presented on Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the high school in Eveleth. A Sunday Matinee will also be held on October 27 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door starting one hour before show time.

Safe Behavior on the Bus
1. Follow the directions of the bus driver at all times
2. Take a seat promptly and remain seated facing forward. Avoid moving around while the bus is in motion
3. Remain on the bus until student has reached their school or designated stop
4. Talk quietly and use appropriate language
5. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself; no pushing, shoving or horse-play
6. Students must not put head, arms, feet, or any object out the window
7. Fighting, harassment, intimidation or horseplay is not permitted on the bus at any time
8. Students should not throw objects of any kind
9. Use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs is prohibited

of classes.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK:
The school district designates the third week in October as school bus safety
week to coincide with National School Bus Safety Week.
STUDENT TRAINING:
The school district shall provide students enrolled in grades Kindergarten
through ten with age-appropriate school bus safety training. All students in
grades Kindergarten through six who are transported by school bus and are
enrolled during the first or second week of school receive the school bus
safety training by the end of the third week of school. Students in grades
kindergarten through ten who enroll in school after the second week of
school, are transported by school bus, and have not received training in their
previous school district shall undergo school bus safety training or receive bus
safety instruction materials within four weeks of their first day of attendance.
REQUESTING TRANSPORTATION CHANGE:
When it is necessary to change a student’s regular bus stop, parents and
guardians must complete a Transportation Change Request Form. Requests
for a change in transportation must be received by the principal’s office five
(5) days prior to the requested change date. Forms are available in the
principal’s office or at www.isd2154.k12.mn.us
The Eveleth-Gilbert Public Schools Student Transportation Safety Policy is
available in its entirety in the principal’s office and on the district’s website
www.isd2154.k12.mn.us Parents and guardians with questions regarding
school transportation should call 218-744-7748 .
Minnesota Statute 121A.59, Transportation by school bus is a privilege, not a right,
for an eligible student. A student’s eligibility to ride a
school bus may be revoked for a violation of school bus
safety or conduct policies, or for violation of any other
law governing student conduct on a school bus, pursuant
to a written school district discipline policy. Revocation
of a student’s bus riding privilege is not an exclusion,
expulsion, or suspension under the Pupil Fair Dismissal
Act. Revocation procedures for a student who is an
individual with a disability under the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act, United States Code, title 29,
section 794, and the Americans with Disabilities Act,
Public Law 101-336, are governed by these provisions.

E-G’s 2013-2014 Cheerleaders
The Eveleth-Gilbert Cheerleaders completed a two day learning camp in Eveleth instructed by UCA staff member, Sarah. The cheerleaders learned about stunting, stunt safety, cheers to do on game day, and leadership skills. Many of the girls earned individual leadership awards, along with three girls making the All American Team. These girls included Ashley Koivunen, Ashley Theien, and Michelle Grigal. The team won a Superior rating in their final evaluation, where they performed a cheer and a dance, which included higher level stunting.
The E-G cheerleaders can’t wait for the sports season to begin so that they can show off their new skills and cheer on their favorite team, the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears! See you at the game!

BACK TO SCHOOL 14 Lunch Program Credit Policy The following Credit Policy has been
issued to satisfy requirements set by the
Food and Nutrition Section of the MN
Department of Education.
The purchase of school meals is set up on
a prepaid basis Students are required to
have money deposited into a school meal
account in order to have access to meals.
According to the Department of
Education, School districts are
responsible to provide meals to children
who do not have to pay for them. Even
with care and good faith efforts, from time
to time students run into a situation
where they do not have credit in their
lunch account. Children cannot engage in
the learning process when they are hun-
gry, so the following procedure has been
established.
REQUEST FOR HANDICAPPED ACCOMMODATIONS

Please submit requests at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled event.
Parents Right to Know Parents of the right to request and receive timely information on the professional
qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers. This requirement applies to all
parents of the children in school, whether or not they receive Title I services, and all
Title I schools, both target assistants and school wide.
When districts receive a parent request they must respond in a timely manner, to the
requested information, and minimum report the following: whether or not the teacher
has met Minnesota’s licensing requirements for the grade level(s) and core academic
subject(s) they teach, whether or not the teacher is teaching under a variance status,
the education level and subject area of the teacher’s college degree major and any
graduate degree or certificate held, whether the child is provided by paraprofessionals,
and if so, their qualifications.
Schools that receive Title I funds shall provide to each parent: information on the level
of achievement of the parent’s child on the state academic assessments, timely notice
that the parent’s child has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecu-
tive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified.
This information provided to parents shall be in an understandable and uniform format
and, to the extent practicable, provided in a language that the parents can understand.
Parental Review of the Contents of Instructional Materials
Minnesota Statutes 126.666 and Independent School District #2154 recognizes the
right of a parent, guardian, or an adult student 18 years or older, to review the
content of instructional material and, if he or she objects to the content, to make
reasonable arrangements with school personnel for alternative instruction.
Alternative instruction may be provided by the parent, guardian, or adult student if
the alternative instruction, if any, offered by the School District does not meet his
or her concerns. The School District is not required to pay for the costs of alterna-
tive instruction provided by a parent, guardian, or adult student. School personnel
may not impose an academic or other penalty upon a student merely for arranging
alternative instruction. For the purpose of this policy, instructional material is
defined as all print and non-print resources used in the education of a student.
1. Instructional material will be available through the office of the building principal.
2. The School District will notify the public of this policy prior to the beginning of each school
year by mail via the district newsletter and by including the policy in each year’s student
handbook.
3. If any course changes occur after the beginning of the school year, the District will notify
any involved parent, guardian or adult student by mail.
4. If a parent, guardian or adult student has any questions about instructional material, he or
she will contact the course instructor to discuss the matter.
5. If the parent, guardian or adult student objects to the material, he or she will make
arrangements with the building principal and the instructor to discuss alternative
instruction, if any, offered by the school.
6. If the school offered alternative instruction does not meet the concerns of the parent,
guardian or adult student, reasonable arrangements for parent, guardian or adult student
alternative instruction, if any will be made.
7. School personnel or a third party may evaluate and assess the quality of the student’s
work.
DISTRICT CRISIS MANAGEMENT POLICY
The Eveleth-Gilbert School District has developed a Crisis Management Policy for
each attendance site. This policy includes general crisis procedures for securing the building. Classroom
evacuation, building evacuation, campus evacuation, and sheltering during the time of crisis. Copies of the
policy are available to the pubic by contacting the building principal.
ISD #2154 Non-Sufficient Funds Check Policy
A procedure has been established by ISD 2154 regarding
non-sufficient fund checks and is applicable per family for
each school year with no carryover to succeeding school
years.
1st returned check during school year: The party is subject to a $15.00 service charge
and will be sent a copy of ISD #2154 non-sufficient funds check policy.
2nd offense during school year: The party is subject to a $15.00 service charge and
will be sent a copy of the ISD #2154 non-sufficient funds check policy
3rd offense during school year: The party will be subject to a $15.00 service charge.
The check writer will be required to remit in cash, cashier’s check or money order, any
purchases or fees from the District until the end of the School year.
Eveleth-Gilbert School District Indoor Air Quality Notice
The Eveleth-Gilbert School District is proud to be taking a leadership role in providing a safe, comfortable and
productive environment for our students and staff so that we achieve our core mission—educating students.
Our school will follow the EPA guidelines to improve our indoor air quality by preventing as many IAQ
problems as possible, and by quickly responding to any IAQ problems that may arise. Good air quality
requires an ongoing commitment by everyone in our school, because each of our daily decisions and
activities are affected by the quality of the air we breathe.
School staff, students and parents can obtain checklists or self-help information so they can properly
evaluate their child’s home or other out-of-school situations by contacting the school staff. Parents can also
obtain information about school facility construction, maintenance and housekeeping practices, chemicals
used, mold and HVAC-related information, chemical producing academic subjects, and pesticide and
herbicide applications to determine the extent to which school activities contribute to a child’s symptoms by
contacting the school.

grounds. If there are questions regarding the District’s IAQ Program, please feel free to contact Mr. Skerjance

student’s account is overdrawn.

The School District has adopted a Student Record Data Privacy Policy incorporating State and Federal requirements as to data privacy rights in student educational records. In summary,
the policy provides:
Privacy Rights: PPRA affords parents certain rights regarding our conduct of surveys, collection and use of information for marketing purposes, and certain physical exams.
These include the right to: Consent before students are required to submit to a survey that concerns one or more of the following protected areas (“protected information survey”) if the
survey is funded in whole or in part by a program of the U.S. Dept. of Education. Political affiliations or beliefs of the student or student’s parent/guardian; Mental or psychological prob-
lems of the student or student’s family; Sexual behavior or attitudes Illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating, or demeaning behavior; Critical appraisals of others with whom respondent has
close family relationships; Religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or the student’s parent/guardian Legally recognized privileged relationships, such as with lawyers, doc-
tors, or ministers; Income, other than as required by law to determine program eligibility. Receive notice and an opportunity to opt a student out of Any other protected information
survey, regardless of funding; Any non-emergency, invasive physical exam or screening required as a condition of attendance, administered by the school or its agent, and not necessary to
protect the immediate health and safety of a student, except for hearing, vision, or scoliosis screening, or physical exam or screening permitted or required under State law; and Activities
involving collection, disclosure, or use of personal information obtained from students for marketing or selling, or otherwise distributing the information to others. Inspect, upon request
and before administration or use: Protected information surveys of students; Instruments used to collect personal information from students for any of the above marketing, sales, or
other distribution purposes; and Instrumental material used as part of the educational curriculum. These rights transfer from the parent to a student who is 18 years old, or an emanci-
pated minor under State law.
ISD #2154 has developed and adopted policies, in consultation with parents, regarding these rights, as well as arrangements to protect student privacy in the administration of protected
information surveys and the collection, disclosure, or use of personal information for marketing, sales, or other distribution purposes. The School District will directly notify parents of
these policies at least annually at the start of each school year, and after any substantive changes. The School District will also directly notify, such as through U.S. Mail or email, parents/
guardians of students who are scheduled to participate in the specific activities or surveys noted below and will provide an opportunity for the parent to opt his or her child out of partici-
pation of the specific activity or survey. The School District will make this notification to parents at the beginning of the school year if the District has identified the specific or approximate
dates of the activities or surveys at that time. For surveys and activities scheduled after the school year starts, parents will be provided reasonable notification of the planned activities and
surveys listed below and will be provided an opportunity to review any pertinent surveys. Following is a list of the specific activities and surveys covered under this requirement. Collec-
tion, disclosure, or use of personal information for marketing, sales or other distribution; Administration of any protected information survey not funded in whole or in part by the U.S.
Department of Education; Any non-emergency, invasive physical examination or screening as described above.
Directory information includes the following: The School District proposes to designate the following personally identifiable information contained in a student’s education record as
“directory information” and it may disclose that information without prior written consent from the parent of the student or the eligible student: the student’s name, the student’s grade
level, photo- graph, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, honors and awards received, and the student’s weight and height if a member of any athletic team; The
parent of a student or an eligible student, upon receipt of this notice, will have two weeks (14 calendar days) to advise the School District in writing ( a letter to the Superintendent’s Office)
of any or all of the items they refuse to permit the District to designate as directory information about the student. This designation will remain in effect until it is modified by the written
direction of the student’s parent or the eligible student. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies LEA’s) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary
Education Act of 1995 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information categories – names, address and telephone listing – unless parents have advised
the LEA that they do not want the student’s information disclosed without their prior written consent.
Directory information, as defined by statutes may be disclosed regarding students who are no longer in attendance within the District.
Inspection of Records: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the
student’s education records. These rights are: The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access. Parents
or eligible students should submit to the School Principal a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect, the School official will make arrangements for access and
notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or
eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may as the School to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. If the School decides
to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding
the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing; The right to
consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the Student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One
exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the school as an admin-
istrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company
with whom the School has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee,
such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to
review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the School discloses education records without consent to officials of another school
district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.
Transfer of Records to other Schools: The School District forwards educational records of students to other schools and school districts in which a student seeks or intends to enroll upon
request of that school or school district. A parent of a student or a student who is eighteen (18) years of age may request and receive a copy of the records which are transferred and may,
pursuant to this policy, challenge the accuracy of the records. The District does not, however, notify parents of students or students of age eighteen (18) or older, prior to such transfer.
Complaints for Non-Compliance: Parents of students or student of eighteen (18) years of age or older who feel there has been a violation of the rights accorded them may submit written
complaints to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Street, Washington, D.C. 20202.
The review of the data privacy rights of students and parents in the educational records maintained by the School District is intended only to be a summary of the provisions of the

ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION As a result of recent federal legislation (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act - AHERA), each primary and secondary school in the nation is required to complete a stringent new inspection for asbestos and to develop a plan of management for all asbestos-containing building materials. Eveleth-Gilbert School District has a goal to be in full compliance with this law and is following the law. As a matter of policy, Eveleth-Gilbert School District shall continue to maintain a safe and healthful environment for our community’s youth and employees. In keeping with this legislation, all buildings owned or leased by the school district were inspected by EPA accredited inspectors and samples were analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on the inspection, the school prepared and the state approved a comprehensive management plan for handling the asbestos located within its buildings safely and responsibly. Furthermore, Eveleth-Gilbert School District has completed its 3-year re-inspection required by AHERA. Eveleth-Gilbert School District buildings, where asbestos-containing materials were found, is under repair, removal and Operations and Maintenance. This past year, Eveleth-Gilbert School District conducted the following with respect to its asbestos containing building materials:
Old Gym: Removed 22: TSI of asbestos containing pipe insulation
Old Junior High Eveleth: Removed 16’ TSI of asbestos containing pipe insulation.
Federal law requires a periodic walk-through (called “surveillance”) every six months of each area
containing asbestos. Also the law requires for all buildings to be re-inspected three years after a
management plan is in effect. This will be accomplished under contract with MacNeil Environmental, Inc.
Short-term workers (outside contractors, i.e. telephone repair workers, electricians and exterminators) must be provided information regarding the location of asbestos in which they may come into contact. All short-term workers shall contact the lead maintenance person before commencing work to be given this information. Eveleth-Gilbert School District has a list of the location(s), types(s) of asbestos-containing materials found in that school building and a description and time table for their proper management. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for review in the district office.
Immunizations Required for School St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services (SLCPHHS) would like to remind families that it is
important to get immunized on time, every time. Vaccines have prevented millions of people from
suffering debilitating and sometimes fatal illnesses. Parents should learn all they can about
immunizations. One good resource can be found at the Centers for Disease Control website www.cdc.gov
Children in Kindergarten and Seventh grade will need to show proof they are vaccinated against
chickenpox (varicella) or have had the disease. Also, children entering Kindergarten will need to show
proof of a second dose for the measles , mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
In addition to the vaccines required under the Minnesota School Immunization Law, the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend that children who are
11-12 years of age or older receive a Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCVW) and a Human
Pappillomavirus vaccine (HPV, for girls only). Although not required for school attendance, adolescents
are more at risk of contracting certain diseases. Don’t forget, adults need vaccines too. Because cases of
pertussis are at a 45 year high, the CDC is urging parents, siblings and anyone caring for infants to get
their Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) up to date to prevent transmission of this
sometimes deadly disease to infants.
Immunizations should be part of a preventative health visit with your regular health care provider. Child
& Teen Checkups (C &TC) is a FREE preventative health care benefit that includes immunizations for
children birth through age 20 who have Minnesota Care or Medical Assistance. Help in finding a doctor,
transportation, or an interpreter is available by calling SLCPHHS. For those whose insurance does not
cover shots, SLCPHHS hold immunization clinics regularly. For more information please call St. Louis

NOTICE CONCERNING USE OF PEST CONTROL MATERIALS
Minnesota State law requires schools to inform parents and
guardians if they apply certain pesticides on school property.
An estimated schedule of interior pest control inspections
and possible treatments is available for review or copying at
each school office. A similar estimated schedule is available
for application of herbicides and other materials to school
grounds. Parents of students may request to receive, at their
expense, prior notification of any application of a pest
control material, should such an application be deemed
necessary on a day different from the days specified in the
schedule.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT & SEXUAL VIOLENCE POLICY
It is the policy of Independent School District #2154 to maintain a
learning and working environment that is free from religious, racial, or
sexual harassment and violence.
It shall be a violation of this policy for any pupil, teacher, administrator,
or other personnel of the School District to harass a pupil, teacher,
administrator, or other personnel through conduct or communication of
a sexual nature or regarding religion and race as defined by this policy.
It shall be violation of this policy for any pupil, teacher, administrator, or
other personnel of the School District to inflict threaten to inflict, or
attempt racial or sexual violence upon any pupil, teacher, administrator
or personnel.
The School District will act to investigate all complains, either formal or
informal, verbal or written, of religious, racial, or sexual harassment or
violence, and to discipline or take appropriate action against any pupil,
teacher, administrator or school personnel who is found to have
violated this policy.

Dental Insurance Available To Students
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood
illness, and over 50% of low-income children in
Minnesota do not receive dental care. That’s why
Smiles Across Minnesota, Children’s Dental Services (CDS), and the
Eveleth-Gilbert School District are working together to provide
Dental care on-site in the Eveleth-Gilbert School District.
CDS will be providing a full range of restorative and preventative care as
well as oral health education to all school children within the district. A
consent form will be sent home with students during the first week of
school. Upon completion of this form, children are provided a dental exam,
a full range of preventative care including fluoride and fillings.
CDS accepts all forms of public and private insurance. No child is denied
treatment due to inability to pay. In the event that a child does not have
insurance, CDS assists families in applying for medical assistance and offers
a sliding scale discount program.

REVENUE TO DISTRICT WILL INCREASE WITH YOUR HELP
Families Encouraged to Apply for Free/Reduced Meals
Each year the Eveleth-Gilbert School District asks parents to complete a form asking about household income levels to determine if students qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Did you know students eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program also earn the school additional revenue that has nothing to do with the food service program?
Higher percentages of free and reduced lunch counts bring schools additional Federal Title Revenue, Federal Special Education Revenue, Federal E-Rate Revenue (discounts on telecommunication services) and State Compensatory Revenue. This article will focus on State Compensatory Revenue.
Compensatory revenue is used for students who enroll in school who are under-prepared to learn at their age level. State statutes allow schools a broad range of ways to spend compensatory revenue.
Schools can spend compensatory funds on remedial instruction in reading, language arts, mathematics, and other content areas including improvement of study skills. It can fund additional teachers and teacher aides. It can fund lower class sizes and/or a team teaching approach. It can fund longer school days or weeks or extended school year programs. It can fund all day every day kindergarten.
Compensatory revenue can fund programs to reduce truancy and encourage graduation. It can fund health services, nutrition services, and provide funding to ensure a safe and secure
learning environment. It can fund staff development to assist teachers and other personnel in identifying the needs of students.
Compensatory revenue can be used to fund materials and technology to provide alternative instruction. It can be used to present instruction at different rates and to present instruction in a different method than initially used.
For the seven county area of Northeastern Minnesota, this additional Compensatory Revenue is between $659.26 and $5,556.62 per additional student eligible for free lunch and between $329.63 and $2,731.22 per additional student eligible for reduced lunch. When you consider the other revenue sources mentioned above, this can add up to a considerable amount of revenue. For our schools the numbers are:

The district understands that some individuals are uncomfortable providing income information to the schools. I want to assure you that this information is not public information. It is used only for determining eligibility. The number of students eligible is reported only as a total number, so no individual information is released. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches are not singled out in the lunchroom. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches are not required to participate in the school’s food program. However, by qualifying they still provide the school with additional revenue.
The district is required to do random income verification, but you are not required to submit paystubs or income tax forms with your application. You only need to provide this information if you are randomly selected for verification.
If your household income is at or below the income levels on the chart below, we are asking you to consider helping the district collect this additional revenue by completing and returning the Free and Reduced Lunch Application form that will be given to each student on the first day of school. If you would like an application form at an earlier date, they are available at the principal’s office at each school and on the district website www.is2154.k12.mn.us.
