She enlisted the help of friend Stephanie LaCava, writer and self-confessed beetle fanatic, to settle on a species. “When I was a little girl I played with bugs, not dolls,” says LaCava, who collects Victorian insect bijoux. Together they leafed through LaCava’s extensive entomology library; as a symbol of rebirth and rejuvenation the scarab was the perfect fit and not unlike the specimens worn by Wes Anderson’s doe-eyed heroine in the recently released Moonrise Kingdom. “Delfina gave it her special touch; the legs and the antennae move so it had an added lifelike quality,” says Monroque. wearing it, I move it around my apartment. It’s my new little pet.” E

Amongst the chicly dressed crowds at the couture shows in Paris earlier this month, one stylish creature stood out above them all: a larger-than-life beetle bedecked with pearls and a dazzling iridescent coat.

“My little dark bug is becoming very sweet to me,” says Shala Monroque, who pinned the eye-catching metallic insect to all but one of her outfits that week. “I’m tired of very pretty things.

There can be beauty in what is seemingly ugly on the surface, we just have to change the context.” She shares those deliciously macabre instincts with other fashion lovers, including Jason Wu, whose resort 2013 collection was sparked by bug taxidermy, and jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez, who made the surrealist piece at the art maven’s request for this year’s Costume Institute Gala.“Insects are so detailed and complex, I love everything about them,” says Delettrez. “I wanted to make the brooch on a gigantic scale, the way it looks through a microscope. It’s how I imagine things when the smallest creatures of the world become predators.”

The inspiration for their bug supreme came via an archival image that Monroque found of a woman with an enormous bejeweled Schiaparelli insect brooch perched on

theraptureofmusicI poeti non dovrebbero essere mai dimenticati. Come è accaduto a questo grande pianista scomparso giovane. Irripetibile, geniale. Il nostro Alfred Cortot. Una vita sublime, contagiosa come una sonata sospesa tra esaltazione, velocità e lievi carezze rubate a tasti che toccano i notturni più inquieti dell’anima

Dino Ciani studied with Alfred Cortot, that irreplaceable man of genius. Errors and false notes characterized the concerts of the French composer and Dino Ciani, though in his own original way, was the Italian Cortot. This artistic consonance is evident in his recordings of Chopin and Debussy. Yet, his lesson was completely forgotten and his discography is inadequate if compared to the endless series of pieces dating from Bach to twentieth century music, a repertoire that most of the pianists, even at the age of 80, cannot claim. In some ways, this repertoire testifies Dino Ciani’s devouring haste in memorizing the piano sonatas, as if he could realize, though unconsciously that his time was short, too short.Listening to Dino Ciani’s recordings is painfully wonderful, an oxymoron which combines the incantation of his interpretative art with the regret for what Italian and international culture have lost forever. His touch, his use of the pedal, his rubato are still contagious, just like Alfred Cortot’s idea of playing music.Dino Ciani loved art, beauty, and speed; he loved Cortina, he loved rapture and ecstasy, both in music and life. The same mad rapture that decided to take him away one spring day, the same wonderful rapture that made him immortal. E

Overlooking the abyss, like one of Kaspar Friedrich’s travellers scanning the distant horizon. All seems to be there, within reach: the light conscience, the frail, the suspended soul. Then, all of a sudden,

ineluctable and devastating, the oblivion. Dino Ciani passed away on a spring day, when he was only 32. The figure of the pianist recalls a famous essay by Roman Jakobson on A Generation that Squandered its Poets. Just like the intellectual progeny the Russian semiologist alludes to, over the years Italy has squandered Ciani’s aestheticconception and his interpretative vision of music. Today, his art is honoured only by Cortina’s Dino Ciani Festival for the passionate authoritativeness of the organizers and the high value of the interpreters. Dino Ciani was an extraordinary poet, in a period when Italian piano music, with the primary exception of Maurizio Pollini and few others, stood for rationalism and technicism when emotions were considered as bourgeois, or even irritating. The pianist had to be serial, pre-packed: every pause, every rubato, every pianissimo, all identical, even when performed years apart. Away with instinct, the sense of risk and the emotions of life, which should be reflected in art.

Musical Panoramas

The Dolomites form the ideal frame for the marriage of the senses. The notes of the greatest composers fill Cortina’s extraordinary mountainscape with the vibrations of Panorami Musicali (Musical Panoramas), a sensory experience organized by the Dino Ciani Festival and Academy together with Cortina’s Rifugi. Sight will be fulfilled by the Dolomite views, taste tempted by the dishes of mile-high chefs, and hearing will be pleased by the harmony of the notes played by the young talents of the Academy and the great artists featured on the summer programme. The first concert will be at Rifugio Lagazuoi, on Saturday July 28th with the Gerhard Quartet from the Basel Musik-Akademie. Then, on August 4th at Rifugio Averau with the artists of the Festival; the closing concert will be held at Rifugio Col Druscié on August 9th with the Violinists from the Academy. All performances will begin at 13.30.

Extremes in contrast are a problem for both film and digital photography, but it is especially a problem when shooting digital. When the highlights and shadows are too extreme, the detail in both areas are in

jeopardy of being lost. Even you try to “average” the exposure, a compromise between the light and dark areas, the shadows tend to go black and the highlights are washed out. With digital photography, even a subtle difference in contrast can mean the complete loss in detail in the highlights. Therefore, try your best to avoid contrasty situations. Patchy lighting is a classic example of what to avoid, but I’ve seen portraits done on overcast days (it was a bright overcast) that show a loss of detail in skin tone because the contrast was just a little too much for digital cameras to handle. Note: Jim Zuckerman teaches many more digital photography tips in several BetterPhoto courses: Mastering Light; Making Money with Your Photography; Eight Steps to More Dramatic Photography; Creative

ariesSelf-improvement is a strong focus this month, dear Aries. Finances, taxes, and intimacy are main themes that you’ll be encountering in November, but this is just the beginning of a several year trend. Events and realizations this month can get the ball rolling for important changes. Love relationships can

reach new depths of understanding. However, there are some hurdles to deal with, and the most important one has to do with your relationship with yourself. This is the time to work on ridding yourself of self-defeating or limiting attitudes.

You’ll be dealing with relationship matters, and especially commitments, in November, dear Taurus, but this is a theme that is only just beginning for you and will in fact be in force for a couple of years. A sense of peace regarding work and health routines is with you this month, and your social life

tends to take center stage. You could find that you’re making more concessions than usual and that your agenda takes a back seat to the plans and needs of important people in your life. A conflict between time spent with friends or children, and time spent with a partner, could arise.

Work and health matters take center stage this month, dear Gemini. In fact, these will be big themes for a couple of years moving forward, and events that occur in November tend to encourage first steps towards making big changes. Going over past errors, redoing projects,

smoothing over differences on the job--all of these matters occupy your mind and your time this month. You’re also busy working with your physical body. Implementing and maintaining an exercise or nutrition program should be a priority. Although routine matters can get boring at times, reworking and reorganizing these things can be very satisfying.

cancerRomance and creativity can blossom this month, dear Cancer, even though there are some rough patches to deal with. The focus is on having fun, enjoying hobbies and pleasurable pastimes, children, and love. Those things in your life that are preventing you from successfully doing any of things

can become glaringly obvious, and the chance to put them behind you is especially strong, with mid-month a hotspot. You are in a rather dramatic phase right now, and your desire to express yourself is powerful. However, while Mercury retrogrades from the 6-26, and especially while this retrograde transits your solar fifth house.

You’re pouring more of your considerable energy (and perhaps money) into family, home, and other domestic matters this month, dear Leo. Attention to your home base is vital for the new cycle beginning near the end of November, when creativity, romance, children, and pleasure come into focus.

The stronger you feel on the inside, the more fun you’ll have (without the guilt that sometimes comes with it) during this upcoming cycle. At first glance, the month may not seem to be as productive as most, but in fact you are building your nest, gathering your resources, and preparing for busier months ahead. For some of you, circumstances are such that

A sense of peace about your personal finances boosts your overall mood, dear Virgo. Spending on frivolous items may be a lure, and you may need to tame this desire somewhat, but you might also decide that you deserve some pampering! November is a busy month for you, with plenty of phone calls,

emails, appointments, and errands to keep you on your toes. However, it’s all too easy for you to be misunderstood during Mercury’s retrograde from the 6-26. Mechanical break-downs, misinformation, dealing with red tape, and other such annoyances, may be part of the picture now. Concentrate on getting your work done right the first time so you won’t

libraNovember is a strong month for taking care of business, practical matters, budget-making, asking for a raise, and discovering new ways to boost your income, dear Libra. A mini-crisis can set you into motion on these matters. Keeping your cool is necessary. An eclipse occurs mid-month that

stimulates you to rearrange your budget, and while this is an important wake-up call, you have plenty of time and opportunity to do so diligently, so avoid snap decisions, as pressured as you may be feeling to make a move. Venus works its way through your sign until the 21st, and this boosts your natural magnetic appeal.

This can be a month of big internal changes, dear Scorpio. The cosmos demand that you mature in some manner - that you meet responsibilities, and get organized in certain areas of your life. The Solar Eclipse in your sign mid-month brings a chance for a new personal beginning, so that if you are looking

to reinvent yourself, this is the time to share yourself in an all-new way. Your personal impact is strong. From the 14-26, you are likely to be in a frame of mind that involves review and caution. Avoid pushing matters. Most decisions don’t need to be made just yet. You’re likely to be self-involved this month, but it’s a necessary process.

While you can be quick to speak and react in the first week of the month, dear Sagittarius, you could be eating your words or at least rethinking things thereafter. In fact, you may not be ready to make clear decisions until Mercury re-enters your sign on December 11th. It may also feel

as if others are slowing your progress, as they can seem distant or indecisive. Romantic and creative matters take center stage until the 16th, and you are likely to receive a lot of attention. However, love becomes more complicated and private from the 21st forward.

our social life is likely to be animated this month, dear Capricorn, demanding your attention. At the same time, your work is blossoming and especially fruitful. The first three weeks of November are good for smoothing over differences in your career and also for dealing with reputation issues. Just

keep in mind that Mercury’s retrograde from the 6-26 can mean more delays and hiccups to deal with than average. You’ll have plenty of time to rework your plans by the end of the month and into December, so do what you can to avoid stressing over details. Mid-month, a fresh start is possible when it comes to a friendship or group association.

Career and reputation matters continue to take center stage this month, dear Aquarius. Over the coming year, professional and personal changes are very likely, and circumstances this month tend to get the ball rolling in that direction. You are aligning yourself with new goals or re-committing to those

already in place. From the 14-26, you could be revisiting old problems in your career or dealing with problems that others have created, but you also have the chance to breathe new life into projects you may have shelved. You will need to tone down your impatience with slower co-workers and stalled projects.

Your sense of adventure runs high this month, dear Pisces, and you are itching for a change of pace. Opportunities for travel and education figure strongly. All things foreign or undiscovered not only appeal to you in November, but could bring new opportunities. You’re likely to make some important

connections if you venture forth onto unfamiliar ground. Nevertheless, there can be some complications to your plans from the 6-26. Vigilantly check your calendar and schedules so that you don’t miss important interviews or deadlines. Watch that you don’t misrepresent yourself, particularly around the 22nd.
