EVANGELINES EVANGELICAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Blessed to be a blessing Volume 59, Issue 10____________________________ _______ ________October 2015 LOVING UNCONDITIONALLY When the first missionaries came to Alberta, Canada, they were savagely opposed by a young chief of the Cree Indians named Maskepetoon. But he responded to the Gospel and accepted Christ. Shortly afterward, a member of the Blackfoot tribe killed his father. Maskepetoon rode into the village where the murderer lived and demanded that he be brought before him. Confronting the guilty man, he said, “You have killed my father, so now you must be my father. You shall ride my best horse and wear my best clothes.” In utter amazement and remorse his enemy exclaimed, “My son, now you have killed me!” He meant, of course, that the hate his heart felt had been completely erased by the forgiveness and kindness of the Indian Chief. We have all struggled with forgiveness and love. When someone hurts us it can be painful. But as difficult as it can be, our God, through Jesus calls us to forgive. What an example Maskepetoon gives to us. It is so difficult to do but in the midst of our struggles that is what we should strive for. Jesus forgave those around him, even as he hung on the cross. He loved people unconditionally. We should work hard to do the same in the midst of our own weaknesses and short comings. LOVING UNCONDITIONALLYWhen the first missionaries came to Alberta, Canada, they were savagely opposed by a young chief of the Cree Indians named Maskepetoon.

175 YEARS IN THE MAKINGOn Sunday, October 18 at 10:15 AM we are going to celebrate 175 years as a church. What a wonderful opportunity to come together and remember who we are and where we are going. We have a beautiful history that we will honor. The possibilities are unlimited in what we can accomplish in Jesus's name. So please join us on October 18. A catered meal will follow directly after the service. It will be a great opportunity for fellowship and perhaps catch up with a few old friends. May God bless us as we continue our journey in faith.

DOING TIME

On Rally Day, we celebrated some of the initiatives that are happening in and around EvUCC; programs and ministries that are addressing needs in our community. They all share a common thread of requiring one of the most precious resources that Highland exports: time. Time is a thing we all wish we had more of, and I’ve noticed some things about time and how it intersects with church.

“I’ve already put in my time.”- This is a phrase I actually hear a decent number of folk say with a twinkle in their eye and a smile on their face. It tends to come from folk who have contributed significant amounts of their time and services to the church or humanitarian endeavors in the past and now hope to “pass the mantle” and empower others to continue the good work. The second part of this has great merit. Empowering others to join forces with us is an extremely Biblical paradigm (look at Paul- he goes into a city, trains leaders, BAM, he’s moving onto the next one). The former part of this thinking on time brings me to another phrase…

“My time *might* come.” – Ok, I’ve never heard anybody actually say this, but I experience it often, usually in newer guests/members, especially of younger generations. The idea behind this time-phrase is that there is openness to participating in the good works of the church as a team, but a degree of convincing and proving may be required. By that I mean, folks whose hearts say phrases like this need to feel like an organization is…well…organized, and prudently uses its resources and whose focus is…focused before committing. I think this is less of an inherent skepticism, but speaks more to the myriad choices of how we use our time in today’s world. So for these folk, the notion of someone “already putting in their time” to invite them into the team doesn’t connect in the same way as someone who can explain exactly what the team is about and what they might expect if they joined this team.

Each of these phrases has certain considerations. The first (“I’ve already put in my time”) challenges us as Christ-followers and leaders to model a discipleship that is a lifestyle, not a career-stint. It doesn’t mean we have to (or should) volunteer for the same things year after year after year, but instead we look to be agents for God in everything we do, for all of time, while serving in ways that genuinely spark interest and passion in us.

For the phrase, “My time might come”, we are challenged to be able to articulate to people who we are, what we’re about, and what we hope to accomplish. The present and future carry a different weight than the past for these folk, and if we’re able to declare our purpose, identity, and (wait for it…) vision, time might become something these folk will wish to invest in the mission of what we are trying to do at EvUCC!

Love your hearts,

Pastor Will
