What are the conventions of the thriller genre?

• A thriller is villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the hero must overcome.

I would describe the thriller genre as a very select genre that has to have few highly significant elements which make it what it is:

• suspense, • tension, • ExcitementWhen these three key elements are put together they create what is known to be a ‘thriller’. Its

these original elemnets which give viewers such intense mood’s whilst watching the thriller and make them want to watch more; anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise and anxiety. By putting the audience through a ‘adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced’ experience you truly get the feel for a thriller and what makes the genre one of the most exciting and watched. The basic literacy devices below are used without fail:

• Red herrings• Plot twists• Cliffhangers

What conventions of the thriller genre do you use in your thriller

coursework?• In our thriller coursework we applied the following methods to genre:• The central protagonist/s faces death, their own or someone else's. This happens when the

main character Jack gets attacked by Luke and is left dead on the ground.• The main plotline focuses on a mystery that must be solved. When Jack is killed the audience

doesn’t know any reason as to why it was done, this leaves us in a ‘mystery’ as to why it was done which needs to be solved.

• All action and characters must be credibly realistic/natural in their representation on screen. All of the action which took place in our thriller opening was done in a realistic manner keeping it credible to what would happen in an everyday situation.

• The two major themes that underpin the Thriller are the desire for justice and the morality of individuals. When Jack is attacked and killed by Luke you want Luke to be brought to justice because as far as the audience is aware Jack has done no wrong and the incident has been done for the thrill of another.

By using the rules of the genre shown above it proves why our thriller was a success and built up tension and incited the audience to want to watch more.

Influences

Ideas such as this came from famous thrillers such as ‘pyscho’ which also had a close up eye shot before the killing once again showing to add suspense being a genre of thrillers.

Our thriller had the ‘mysterious man’ played by Luke staring at Jack wih a close up on his eyes to add suspense –a thriller genre

• This gave me the idea to suggest the set our own thriller opening down an ally as it was an inclosed space leaving little room for excape like that of the 1976 thriller –The Little Girl who Lives down the Lane.

What is original to our thriller compared most?

• The difference to our thriller is that it opens straight away with the action and murder of an innocent cillivian, whereas majoirty of thrillers wait to build up tensions throughout the film or half way through to keep your attention. Ours shows the ‘incident’ being done straight away and then leaves the audience as to why it was done?, why Jack and not somebdoy else?, what caused this tension?, was it random?, was Jack relevant to Luke? All in all leaving the audience once again in suspense and terror, as it is set in an everyday example it makes easily to relate to because they may think it could happen to them next!
