3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Before we started filming our documentary, we made a questionnaire, which we handed out

to our target audience (students at Solihull Sixth Form), asking about their experiences and

their thoughts on alcohol. The aim of this was to find, on average, the starting age of

underage drinking and how aware parents were:

Research shows that the average binge drinker starts at the age of 12and progresses. In this

questionnaire, it shows that a majority of the students begin drinking at the age of 14. In

another question we asked if they have ever: been drunk (40% answered Yes); had an injury

whilst drunk/tipsy (20% answered Yes); been absent from school because of alcohol related

problems such as a hangover (20% answered Yes) and if they have ever seen their parents

drunk (20% answered Yes).

2. How old were you when you first had alcohol?

1. How often do you drink?

A majority of the students think that the drinking age should be ‘kept to 18 years old’

because it seems to be a sensible age where people are mature enough to drink

responsibly. However, a student who circled ‘reduced to 16 years old’ stated: “everyone

drinks from the age of 12 because they are influenced, especially after high school…should

be able to drink responsibly.

After we had finished making the television documentary, radio trail and the magazine

article, we were told to create an audience feedback questionnaire on the three products.

We handed out the 8 questionnaires to 17-18 year old college students. Doing this we found

was very useful as it had shown reliable statistics on what they thought of our documentary.

The Documentary:

1. Was there a variety of shots in the documentary?

98% of the students asked answered ‘Yes’, and stated that there were a variety of

close-ups, panning and montage were used effectively.

2. Was the music suitable for our genre?

90% of the students answered ‘Yes’, the music we had used in our documentary was

consistent and matched the music we used in our radio trail.

3. Were the sound levels consistent throughout?

98% of the students answered ‘No’, the sound levels of the voiceover compared to

the interviews and vox pops in the documentary were not consistent as they were

uneven, which was noticeable/ obvious to the audience.

The Radio Trail:

4. Was the audio suitable for the radio trail?

98% of the students answered ‘Yes’, overall a majority of the students thought that

the audio extracts used to advertise the documentary. However I had asked one of

the students that circled ‘No’ and they replied that the extracts used gave too many

important opinions away to the listener and that it did not appeal to them.

5. Were the sound levels consistent throughout?

99% of the students answered ‘No’. The sound levels, like the sound levels in the

documentary, also had the problem of the audio extracts to be very

unevencompared to the voiceover. As well as this, the background music at one

point overpowering the audio extract.

The Magazine Article:

6. Were the images suitable for the article?

99% of the students answered ‘Yes’. The still shots chosen were effective and

appropriate for the audience. The students thought that the article was not

overcrowded with images, and looked professional and simple.

7. Did you find the article appealing?

95% of the students answered ‘Yes’. They thought that the article was consistent in

colour scheme and that it acquired conventions of a real magazine article. However,

the remaining 5% who answered ‘No’; thought that the article did not appear to be

like an article from our chosen magazine (‘More’) and that the layout was not

appealing to them.

8. Did you find that the three products

were up to a professional standard?

Overall, we have learned that our target audiences think that the radio trail and the

documentary were more effective than the magazine articles. The criticisms of the 2 products

however, were the uneven sound levels. The magazine article was seen to be unappealing by

some of the students, but did consist of conventions of a real magazine product.
