What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Evaluation Question 3

To carry out the audience research, I set up a Facebook group in which I posted questions directed at our audience. When I added the members to the group I made sure that they were part of the target audience, so we could get as best answers as possible.

This is simple way of collecting qualitative data. It was easier for us to collect this type of data rather than quantitative, as this would be very time consuming, and may have cost us money. Even if we did have the time and money to produce quantitative data, it still wouldn’t have been as useful to us; numbers wouldn’t have told us what people really thought.

Here are the questions I asked the members of our focus group about our music video.

Feedback.

The audience have been effected by my video in ways which I would expect.The main response was that they felt nostalgic, happy and involved in the

artist’s life. The target audience seem to be reading the text how I would have wanted

them to, I can tell this from what they said they were feeling when they watched it. I wouldn’t have wanted them to feel sad or in any way down because the aim was to create an uplifting piece.

Cultural Capital:Pierre Bourdieu believed that social groups develop different types of ‘cultural capital’ depending on their class and background. It is the informal knowledge we have. Different people have different types of cultural capital depending on their own social context. He also said that different groups will praise certain types of cultural capital more than others. For example; one family’s appraisal of doing chores my differ from another family’s, or certain knowledge of TV trivia may be praised highly in one friendship group but not another. My older relatives have limited knowledge of contemporary video styles, but I don’t think this means they won’t necessarily enjoy it. I think they would gain the same reading from it as from what the feedback told me. Some of my friends probably have a better understanding of music videos of the acoustic genre than me so their reading of my video would be slightly different. They would probably pick out the very detailed parts of it which other members of the target audience wouldn’t be able to.

As I did not receive any negative comments about my video I don’t think I would alter my work (hypothetically) as a result of the feedback.

Although, as a result of my own opinion I would possibly change the range of shot types we used. I don’t think we had an especially appealing variety in our video, and to improve this might change the audience’s similar readings of the video.

I also gathered some feedback from the print work.

To get these few pieces of feedback, I used facebook and an instant messaging service.

I can see that the responses are quite positive, I can also see that they seem to be taking the preferred reading of the print work.

The only thing I would change about my print work if I had to from looking at the feedback would be to add retailers on the advert, and possibly another rating.

Andrew Goodwin & Music VideoGoodwin identified key features which he found to be

common in many music videos.One of the features which Goodwin has identified was:

"A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.“

This is present in my video. For example the lyrics say “Footprints of passion” and the visuals show the artist’s feet walking.

You could say that the jump cuts when the lyrics are “Same old fashion” reflect this. We see the artist in 3 different spots in the same shot location. This could be shown as being in the “same old fashion”

Another point he made was:"A relationship between the music and the

visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.“

The visuals in my video both illustrate and amplify the music. We can see this in the shots of the guitar being strummed. Also, when the music gets faster, so does the pace of the editing.

One other thing Goodwin said was: "Multiple close-ups of the main artist or

vocalist.“Our video definitely follows this convention.

We made sure to use many close ups (as well as long/mid shots) of our artist performing.

Even though it is a convention that so many other music videos use, it is clear to be an effective one.
