Gen d e r r e pres entat ion i n o u r opening se q u e n ce In our openi n g sequence gender representation is quite stereotypical. A male character is depicted in the only position of authority (the detective); his costume tells us he is an authority figure due to the fact that he is smartly dressed. This is conventional of thrillers where the detective is also usually a man and of media as a whole where men often ha ve higher positions than women. The other lead male character is portrayed as violent, as he is to blame for his sis ter’s death and this reflects the stereotype that males are aggressive. We used close-up and mid shots which are composed so that he is looki ng at the camera directly and in the centre of the shot, which reflects the power that he has. The low-key lighting suggests dan g er which reflects males’ stereotypical violence.

In our opening sequence gender

representation is quite stereotypical. A

male character is depicted in the only

position of authority (the detective);

his costume tells us he is an authority

figure due to the fact that he is smartly

dressed. This is conventional of thrillers

women. The other lead male character

is portrayed as violent, as he is to

blame for his sister’s death and this

reflects the stereotype that males are

aggressive. We used close-up and mid

shots which are composed so that he is

looking at the camera directly and in

the centre of the shot, which reflects

the power that he has. The low-key

lighting suggests danger which reflects

males’stereotypical violence.

Women are represented as quite weak

as the only female character is the

victim which suggests she is vulnerable

and unable to defend herself. She is

also represented as quite dependent

on male characters as she is nearly

always framed in shots alongside her

brother and only once is on her own in

a shot. Furthermore, unlike the two

male characters she does not have any

dialogue so the character is not as

developed as that of the other two.
