Evaluation- Question 2: How effective is the combination

of your main product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Evaluation question 2

The Slogan: ‘What Makes Your Skin Crawl?’• One way in which we have made our products

effective, is by using the same slogan in both promotional texts.

• We have a used a rhetorical question because it makes the audience think of their fear. Therefore this would attract them to watch the documentary.

Taken from the newspaper advert.

• Another way in which the combination of our main product and ancillary texts are effective, is by using the same voiceover for the programme and trailer.

• This is effective because it links both products together.

• We have chosen a male for the voiceover because the deepness of his voice is typical of connoting fear.

• As well as that, for the radio trailer, the voiceover is edited into a deeper scarier tone to create that sense of alarm when the audience hear it.

The highlighted part is what was said in the voiceover

Furthermore...

• A way in which our main product and ancillary texts are effective is by using clips from the programme in the radio trailer.

• We have used these clips because they evoke a sense of wonder which would interest my target audience to watch the documentary and find out why.

The Tone…• Moreover, we decided that the tone of our programme would be a bit

humorous as well as striking. For example, here’s a clip from the documentary.

• This makes it effective as it appeals to those who like to watch comedy and those who like to watch horror.

• Also, the tone of shock is clearly reflected in the promotional texts as they both have connotations of fear.

The Newspaper Advert:We used this image of the snake because it is a common fear, which could shock the audience if they opened a newspaper and found that.

The sweat on the guy’s face clearly symbolises that he is sweating in fear of the snake. This is effective as it makes the audience think of what extreme fears they have.

The black background symbolises fear, as darkness is usually associated with death and this is effective because it is a common fear therefore, it would make the audience relate to it and this would make them want to watch the documentary.

We've used a male model rather than a female, which is effective as it challenges the gender stereotype that women more likely to have fears than men.

We’ve made the slogan stand out more than the title because this question is attention grabbing and makes the audience think of what their fear is, which could make them wonder what other people’s fears are and therefore watch the programme.

In addition.....• We decided to play our programme on BBC 1

because this channel targets everyone and includes popular programmes.

• The way we have used the channel identity in both promotional texts is effective as it informs the audience what channel it will be on.

• We’ve also included the time in both of the promotional texts and we’ve chosen 9pm because the topic of fear is mostly suitable for older audiences and 9pm is the watershed.

• To advertise to a wide range of audience, we’ve decided that the radio trailer would be played on national radio stations such as Radio One to Radio Five and other BBC stations.

Where would the ancillary texts be advertised?

• Also, the newspaper advert would be advertised in popular newspapers such as the Sun, Daily Mirror, and the Daily Mail.
