    Evaluation.

    1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

I used the font ‘Accord eavy !"# for my masthead ‘$A!%#. &his font was already on the 'hotoshop

software. &he font is large and old, and I also used a right virant colour, this maes the masthead

stand out to the reader* audience+ this type of convention is used on similar magazines which I have

taen inspiration from. I chose my title ‘$A!%# as it was a short word, easy to rememer and also

other similar magazines, have titles that are not too long and are very easy for the audience to

rememer, also I called my magazine ‘ase# as it connotes well with my genre of music which I have

chosen. &he word ‘$A!%# instantly tells the audience that it will e a magazine aout music with good

ass, although I have spelt ass differently (I#ve spent it ‘$A!%#) when people see that word, they

thin of music and so they now it is a music magazine. y masthead font is not the same as other

magazine fonts that are connected with the same genre ecause I didn#t want to mae my magazine

the sae as other magazines, I wanted it to have its own loos also, ut my masthead is positioned inthe same way as the ‘I-# magazine, which was one of the magazines I too inspiration from. I wanted

my magazine to loo simple yet effective and I feel that the font, title and positioning of my masthead

helps to eep my cover simple.

y layout on my cover is simple+ it is clear and is not too crowded y te/t or other pictures. 0n the

cover, I mainly too inspiration from the magazine ‘I-# as I found the masthead was very eye

graing and the pictures made really good use of the whole page. &he contents page is also uite

simple+ I had taen inspiration from two different magazines and mi/ed them together to create my

own uniue contents page. I had used ideas from the contents pages of ‘I-# and ‘uc# magazine#s

and I used my creativity to mi/ them up as I lied oth layouts, it loos simple ut it is eye catching for

the reader, it is old and it is clear that it is a contents page. &he right page of the doule page spread

is inspired from the ‘uc# magazine, as on this magazine on the right page, they had two separate

pictures to fill the whole page, I feel this is a uniue layout as that is the only magazine that I had seen

that had laid a doule page spread out lie that. &he left page of my doule page spread challenges

e/isting magazines (or at least magazines of my genre), I feel it loos uniue ut is very simple and it

is neat and tidy, which is the loo that I was going for. I wanted to eep all pages simple, yet I wantedthem to stand out and I feel that I have achieved that target, as all pages are fairly simple ut they are

all eye graing and I am satisfied with the overall result.

    y model ‘2ames

    &agger# who is seen

    on the cover and

    contents page is

    styled with simple

    clothing, ut clothing

    that maes him loo

fashionale, he isn#t wearing anything ‘indie# he is 3ust

wearing a plain white t-shirt, this is nothing special ut it allows him to loo good and stand out. Also,

on the contents page is another artist who is dressed with a denim 3acet, a lac top and a cap. I

styled him that way as I wanted him to loo lie he is fashionale ut also wanted the audience to

now straight away that he is an artist who en3oys his fast music with a good eat, you can also the

photo is too in a dar environment where there is no sunlight, I wanted to tae the picture when it

was dar and wanted the flash to do all of the lighting wor as I felt as if that sort of image suits my

genre. &he artist ‘om !mith# on the doule page spread is also seen wearing

predominantly dar clothing with a denim 3acet over his hoodie. I styled him this way to

show the audience that whilst eing a good producer, he is

also a fashionale guy. I too the pictures of him outside a

4athedral, there were spotlights along the floor and so Iused them to help with the lighting, along with the flash on

the camera, to show that he is in a very dar environment.

&he clothing I styled my artists in are all clothing in which

my target audience lie to wear, and that gives my artists

and magazine a connotation to my target audience and

that will help sell my magazine. I feel this uses ideas of

e/isting magazines as they do the same.

&he camera wor on ‘2ames &agger# was used with a high uality 4annon camera, I used a tripod

also to ensure the camera stayed still and I got the perfect shot of my artist. I got a close up shot of

him as I wanted the whole picture to tae up the whole page+ this is something that I used frommagazines such as ‘I-#, ‘5I$%#. 0n a lot of their magazine covers, they used a plain acground and

a mid-shot* close up of the artist and so I too inspiration from these magazines as I felt that it was a

good way to mae use of the whole page. 0n the camera wor on the other picture on the contents

page, I again used a really good uality 4annon camera and this time too the picture free hand. I

too it free hand ecause I was multiple photos at different angles, heights and also different shot

types and I felt doing it free hand would allow me to get a lot of pictures which would e of a different

variety and I felt the picture I used was the est one. 0nce again it is a close up of the artist to show

his e/pressions. "or the pictures of ‘om !mith# I used a close up shot of him on the left hand page to

again, show his e/pression. 0n the right hand page, I used mid-shots of him to show his clothing and

to allow the readers to see the acground he is in. I too these pictures free handed also as I was

again taing lots of different photos, using different shots, angles and heights and this way helped meto get a variety of pictures and it allowed me to have a good variety to choose from when I was putting

them in the doule page. I feel this uses ideas from other e/isting magazines such as ‘I-#, ‘5I$%#.

"or the cover page, the font I used is Accord heavy !", I used this font ecause it is old and sharp, it

stands out a lot when the font size is enlarged. 0n the contents page and the doule page spread, the

font I used was $aserville 0ld "ace, I used this font ecause it loos really crisp, it is easy to read

and it doesn#t loo too oring and plain, ut at the same time it doesn#t loo too fancy. &hese fonts

challenge the ones used on the magazines that I have taen inspiration from (I-, 5I$%). I didn#t use

the same font on purpose as I don#t want my magazine to loo identical to other e/isting magazines, I

want it to have some similarities and some differences.

y magazine cover, contents and doule page spread suggest to the reader that the genre for my

magazine is 67$, ip op, 6ap ecause of the pictures and clothing of my artists. &he ‘2ames

&agger# pictures are 3ust on a white acground, ut he is dressed and styled appropriately to suit thegenre that I have chosen. &he other pictures on the contents page and doule page spread are taen

on different acgrounds, outside the studio and the clothing of the other two artists and the

acground for the other pictures, allows the reader to now what genre my music magazine is aout.

Also, on the doule page spread, the language format I have used also suggests that it a music

magazine with a genre of 67$, ip op, 6ap. 0n the contents page, I have suggested well nown

artists that are associated with my genre so it shows the reader what genre my magazine is. I feel y

using the language register that I did use aspects of current music magazines that I have taen

inspiration from. Also I feel y using the acgrounds in the pictures to help show my artists#

personalities also uses aspects from other magazines in the same genre.

"irstly, my artist ‘2ames &agger# is represented as a guy who wants to loo good at all times and cares

aout his appearance, his style also connotes with my magazine style, as eing simple yet eye

catching and that is why it is good to have him on the cover page. ‘arry 'attison# is represented as

eing someone who cares aout his loos, hence the denim 3acet, ut he also wants people to

recognise that he is into his rap music and that is why he has the cap on. y third and final artist on

my coursewor is ‘om !mith# he is represented, lie ‘arry 'attison# in a way that he wants to loo

good ut he also wants people to now that he is into a lot of music with a good eat, also in the

uestions he answer on the doule page spread, it shows that he is someone who swears a lot ut is

very humle. All of these connote with magazines such as ‘I-#, ‘5I$%#. Also the uestions ‘om

!mith# answers allows the readers to get to now him more.

&he colour scheme I have used is consistent throughout my magazine+ I used the colours white, pin

and grey. I wanted to use a sutle colour for the ma3ority of the pages ecause that would allow the

pin and grey to really stand out. I used the pin and white ecause the ‘I-# magazine used them

colours and they loos really good and caught my eye a lot. &he grey was my idea as I thought it was

uite uniue. I didn#t want to have too many colours incorporated in my magazine ecause I was

going for a simple, yet effective style and I feel the three colours I used have helped me achieve that.

    2. During the research and planning stages of producing my media product (music magazine), the

audience research, audience profile, and also the artist profile was very important as I had to think

about what my target audience wanted to see on a magazine cover etc. I had to make sure that the

magazine that I was making would attract my target audience, who enoyed then genre of !"#, $ip

$op and !ap. #y doing some research on my target audience, I now know what type of magazine that

they will be looking for the buy. Doing research on my target audience made it easier for me to style

my magazine and artists in my magazine. I used a website called %& 'ribes to help carry out some

research on my target audience. 'his website has different categories in which types of people fit into.

y target audience mostly fits into the ainstream* category+ I decided that my target audience fits

mostly into all of the categories within the ainstream* category. %& 'ribes suggest that

ainstream* people never like to show off* which matches my target audience. 'hey do not like to

come out of there comfort zone, they are very chilled out, enoy their cars and enoy to socialise and

love going out. 'hey do not like to try new things and like what they already have and do. #y

researching my target audience, i knew how to style my artist in certain clothing because I knew I had

to use clothing that would attract my target audience, something in which they would also wear.

-rom this research, I feel that my magazine will need an artist who dresses like my target audience

and will have to have a mainstream look as this will help me attract my target audience.

y cover artist ames 'agger* will be wearing simple clothing which makes him look good, this will

represent my target audience as that is the same sort of clothing which they wear also.

I have styled my cover artist ames 'agger* like big name artists such as ustin #ieber and others too.

/s you can see from the images below, both ames 'agger* and ustin #ieber are wearing plain whitet0shirts. 'hey are both plain but make both artists look good, my target audience do not like different*

clothing and that is why my artist is dressed how he is. /lso he is dressed like this because all artists

in my genre like to be simple yet effective.

#oth artists are on a white background but I turned one of the lights off in the photo studio to give the

picture a grey0ish background because grey was one of the main colours in my colour palette and I

wanted a consistent colour scheme throughout my magazine. I have also represented my social group

in my double page spread. 'he language I used is one which my target audience would use. 'he artists

named in my magazine are also artists who my target audience would like.

    1. ublishing is the process of distribution and production. 'here is a lot of distribution and

publishing companies such as 'ime Inc., eredith and others. I3 media is also another

publishing company (International ublishing 3ompany). 'his is the %&*s leading and one of the most successful magazine publishing companies. 'hey have a reputation of selling 145 or

over million copies of their magazines each year and they also know over 45 well0known

brands. 'hey own 67 which is a very successful magazine that is well0known, they own

6%'8 which is an e9tremely successful men*s leisure magazine the money for production

and publishing of #/87 magazine will be funded from advertisement and promotion of

internal and e9ternal, such as advertisement for 3oachella, I would charge them with a sum of

money to have a space in my magazine so that I can advertise their festival. 'his would

benefit them because by having advertisements in my magazine, they will be letting their

audience know more details about the festival, the money received from them can be spent on

publishing and distributing and producing my magazine. I was inspired to use internal ande9ternal advertisements and promotion as a way to gain my magazine money to publish,

produce and distribute my magazine from other e9isting magazines such as ID magazine and

    :ibe magazine.

I think I3 would be a good institution as they have good knowledge and e9perience of

publishing and distributing good, well0known magazines. 'hey do not publish and distribute a

magazine within my genre so I feel I am filling a gap in their market and that is another

reason why I feel they should publish my magazine. 'hey have a lot of knowledge on where

to distribute magazines, when to distribute them and many other factors that will be vital to

produce my magazine and ensure it is successful.

;. Based on my research for my target audience, I came to the conclusion that mymagazine would be aimed at people aged between 18-! because I feel that at the age

of 18, most people will have a "ob and will be able to pay for my magazine and at this

age, they will be interested in all things included in my magazine, I feel that at the age of

!, they will start to have more important things in life rather than reading music

magazines and that is why I have targeted 18-! year olds #both males and females$. I

have also based my target audience on people who en"oy buying new clothes, socialising

with people, en"oy social media, concerts% festivals. &lso I have noticed that people who

are 18 years or over may be willing to travel to go to big festivals and most people who

are 18 years or over have the money to do so with a group of friends and that is also a

reason why I have chosen the age 18-!. when turning 18, a lot f people will go to

university and ma'e more friends and they will all go out drin'ing at clubs% bars and at

clubs and bars it is my genre of music that gets played, it isn(t something li'e )indie(

music that gets played at bars and clubs. *y genre of music sounds good when it is

played out really loud and that is why they are played at clubs and bars and that will also

attract people to en"oy my genre of music that I have chosen for my magazine. *ore

people get )addicted( to this genre of music when going out to clubs and bars when

drin'ing with friends because they en"oy the loud music. &fter people +nish university

and graduate, they may feel they want to go abroad to celebrate and want to go to a big

festival and a festival such as oachella or omorrowland may be in their minds because

they en"oy my genre of music and my genre of music gets played a lot at those types of

concerts. &s they will have "ust graduated they won(t mind spending money to go all the

way to &merica to go. &lso I have stopped at the age of ! years old because they will

have other things to do rather than go out with friends, go on holiday with friends etc. I

feel my genre of music gets listened to more once people start hearing it being played

really loud in a club% bar. he sales to each gender may dier each month as the artist

on the cover of my magazine may determine whether they buy the magazine that month

    or not.

I had to 'eep my audience research in mind when designing my magazine to ensure it

+tted my genre style and also met with the interest of the target audience. I had to

ensure that my artist )/ames agger( was styled% modelled appropriately to ma'e sure he

matched the clothing styles of my chosen genre, this would allow my target audience to

be related to my magazine. &s my artists( hair is long I had to style it so that his hair

style didn(t loo' too )indie( and I feel I did that 0uite well as I styled his hair to be simple

but also loo' good. I styled my magazine so that it was simple, yet eye- catching because

that also matches with my target audience. hey layout of my overall magazine is very

simple but the pictures and colour scheme is very eye grabbing and that is what I

wanted from the start. I 'now that there are already some really popular 2B, 3ip 3op,

ap magazines but I feel these are the types of magazines that catch peoples eyes, mine

is also a little dierent to current magazines of my genre as I have mi4ed aspects of

dierent magazines together to give my magazine a uni0ue loo'. I didn(t include much

on my magazine as I wanted to 'eep it simple yet eye- catching, my layouts for all pages

are fairly simple but I feel they are very eective and also loo' good.

!. double page spread- In the double page spread, I added a pull 0uote that is intended

to grab the readers( attention as soon as they loo' on the left hand page of the double

page spread. he pull 0uote is located "ust below the picture on the left hand page. I

located it here because when the reader loo's at the double page spread, they will loo'at the left hand page +rst as most people read from left to right, so I 'new that as soon

as they loo' at the left page of the double page spread, their attention will be drawn to

the picture of 56om 7mith5 and right under that photo is the pull 0uote, where they will

most li'ely loo' after loo'ing at the picture and this pull 0uote will give them a little

insight of to what the 0uestions may be about when interviewing 56om 7mith5

I used a very simple way to attract the audience in a different way. I created a title for the double page spread in a way which

would make the reader interested in reading the double page spread. y title was ith Dom 8mith< by

writing this as my title, allows the reader to know that the artist

#logger I used #logger to post my work regularly, this ensured my work could not be lost

and it was also a good way to see all of the work I have done for my magazine e.g. research.

#logger is also a Buick way for the teachers to have a look at the work I am producing. /lso

#logger is a good way to present work on 8cribd, rezi etc.

rezi0 I used rezi to do one of the evaluation Buestions on, I decided to use this format

because it is something other than a blog post, powerpoint etc. I have now learnt a new way

of presenting my work so that my blog isn

8cribd I used 8cribd to upload word documents onto my powerpoint, it is much easier to lay

things out such as pictures on word than it is on #logger and so I did some work on word and

used 8cribd to then put it on my #log.

8lideshare I used 8lideshare to upload powerpoints onto my blog, I only used it a few times

but it was an easy way of uploading a piece of work that would look better on a powerpoint

    on a blog.

8oundcloud I used 8oundcloud to upload my playlist, this was an easy app to put together

songs of my genre and then upload them to my blog. I have had 8oundcloud for a while now

but I have never made a playlist on it and this task helped me learn how to do it.

8urvey onkey 'his sight taught me how to make a Buestionnaire in which I posted on my

blog for people in my audience category to take part in as part of my research and planning to

help me get a greater understanding of how to style my magazine.

?ighting I used softbo9 lights on the cover image as I wanted my image to have a good

amount of lighting but I also wanted a slight shadow to give it a grey look which matches my

colour palette. I have learnt from using these that the positioning of the lights is very

important as it can change the Buality of image and lighting.

. 8ooing ac on my preliminary magazine and comparing it to my final version of my music

magazine, I have had a vast improvement in the uality of my wor. y camera shots and mise en

scene are a of a higher uality in my final music magazine and that allows my magazine to loo more

professional. A reason why my images loo much etter in my final music magazine is ecause I have

learnt that the styling and positioning of the artist needs to suit the genre for it to suit the magazine.

"or e/ample, the image on my front cover o my preliminary magazine, the model is wearing clothes

that most students wouldn#t wear and so it 3ust wouldn#t apply to most students, ut the clothing my

model is wearing on my front cover of my final music magazine is suitale for my target audience

which will hopefully mae them want to uy and read it. &he change of styling in oth magazines

shows my improvement on mise en scene as it is more suitale for my target audience.

"or my camera wor, on the preliminary image on the front cover, I cut the image out and it didn#t loo

right or even professional whereas on my final music magazine, I used the lighting in the studio to

help get a ‘grey- ish# acground so that I didn#t have to cut the image out so it looed neat and also

so it matches my colour palette and that made my magazine loo neat and uniformed. I learnt that

lighting was an important factor when taing pictures and I used the soft light o/es to my advantage

to mae the acground loo slightly grey y using only one soft light o/, other than learning that

lighting helps to improve picture uality, I also learnt that the positioning of the lights also helps. After I

realised the importance of the lighting, when I was taing pictures for the doule page spread, there

was spot lights on the floor and so I used them to my advantage to get etter images.

9hen taing pictures, I have learnt to direct the model in a sense that I would instruct my model on

how to stand, pose etc. the pictures in the preliminary magazine are very asic and oring, they are

not eye catching which is a ad thing as the audience may not even e tempted to read it, ut my

pictures on my final music magazine are much etter as my models are posing in positions that will

hopefully attract the audience to uy and read it.

I have also learnt that the sizing of te/t, images etc. are very important in the process of maing a

magazine, on the preliminary, my arcode is too ig and that would mae everything else on my

magazine loo out of proportion, on my final music magazine, my arcode is much smaller and te/t is

in a size so that my magazine loos lie a professional magazine. I learnt that everything needs to e

of a reasonale size in order for my magazine to loo professional. Also, the positioning of every

element on every page is also something that I have learnt from doing the preliminary tas to the final

    music magazine.

I have learnt that editing pictures is also vital to mae a good magazine as the pictures need to e

near enough perfect for the magazine to loo good. "or the preliminary I used uite a oring font

which wouldn#t really e eye graing and I also felt it looed really oring and no other magazine

would use that font and it also looed unrealistic. 0n my final music magazine, I looed at the fonts on

magazines from my genre and chose a font which looed similar ut had a few minor differences.

"rom this I have learnt that I have to research products within my genre in order to get good ideas that

will suit my chosen genre and target audience. &he placing of te/t on contents and cover of my

preliminary and final music magazine are completely different as I didn#t really have much inspiration

for the preliminary magazine due to lac of research of school magazines and so I did what I thoughtwhat would loo good, whereas on the music magazine I research and analysed other music

magazines in my genre which inspired me on how to style my magazine. %ven the contents pages are

different on the preliminary and final music magazine as on the preliminary I had no idea* inspiration

where to place anything as I hadn#t done any research on school magazines where as for the music

magazine I had researched other contents page#s and had an idea what I wanted to do.
