In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have stuck to many different conventions when designing my magazine. I have attempted to use the rule of thirds in my media magazine. The straplines are kept on either side of the page with main image in the middle. The cover model has his eyes roughly one third down the page.

Page is split up into grid of 3x3 squares

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have also used the convention of having a 50/50 split for my double page spread. 50/50 split isn’t the main convention used in magazine though, but it is the one I chose to use. I have used text entirely on one page and the 2nd page with images.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have however challenged this convention by using a further 50/50 split on the second page for two images. I have also put the text on the right page instead of the left which is the how it is usually set when using a 50/50 split.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine was designed to be aimed at teenagers and young adults. The styles I have used in my magazine reflect this e.g. the font isn’t straight and clean, it is more rough a style popular with teenagers. The font colours are very dark which can be associated with teenagers. I have however added in some brighter colours so that it would appeal to other readers as well.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The genre used in my magazine is rock. This is aimed particularly at the rocker and emo cultures. I used the flame effects on my front cover to further emphasise this. Fire is usually shown to be linked with anarchists which in turn are usually linked to rockers.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine mainly represents males. The type of music ‘rock’ is usually aimed at males therefore I tried to aim my magazine at males in particular. I have used very dark fonts so that it is still associated with rock but also brighter colours for other parts of the magazine e.g. the font.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is not aimed at any particular race, ethnicity, social class or disability. It mainly covers age and gender.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?

During my research and planning I looked at multiple publishers that could possibly publish my magazine. A few of the publishers I looked at were IPC, Bauer Media and Emap. I looked at whether or not they already published rock magazines and how successful they are.

Page 10: Evaluation

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?IPC – IPC has a lot of magazines already, and a large number of those are very successful. But it already has a long established iconic rock title, NME.

Because they are unlikely to publish a magazine with same genre IPC is unsuitable to publish my magazine.

Page 11: Evaluation

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?Bauer Media – Bauer mainly publish crossword and puzzle books but they do have a few magazines.

Bauer also has a rock magazine Kerrang! A highly successful magazine, so they would be less likely to publish mine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?Emap – Mainly publishes business magazines and so is unsuitable to be the publisher of my magazine.

Future PLC – They already have a long list of magazines related to rock and specific aspects of rock and so they would be unsuitable to be my publisher.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?Haymarket Media Group – Haymarket publish a small range of magazines mainly car magazines. As they do not have any music magazines this publisher would be the best one for my magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?

The best publisher for my magazine would be Haymarket. It is a successful publisher of magazines and does not have any other music magazines, which means it would be more likely to publish my magazine.

Who would the audience be for your media product?

The audience for my magazine would mainly be teenagers specifically males aged 14 +.

The rock genre is mainly for males with social class of A, B, C1 and C2. This is because of what some of the music represents, particularly in my magazine, anarchy and chaos.

There is no particular ethnicity that my magazine is aimed at.

Page 16: Evaluation

I have used many different aspects to attract the audience for my magazine. I have used many dark fonts to appeal to the emo/rocker cultures.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Page 17: Evaluation

I have also added the effect of flames to the front cover as it could seen that it symbolises anarchy a theme of rock.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used the camera to take photos for my magazine

I USB wire to transfer all of my images onto the computer then used different programs to create my magazine

Page 19: Evaluation

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Using the polygonal lasso tool I could select parts of my image to perform cut-outs

I drew around my image with the lasso tool so that I could manipulate it

Page 20: Evaluation

Using the auto levels tool I could adjust the image to look better

I can use the history feature to undo any mistakes I’ve made

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Using the gradient tool I was able to create the flame effect for my front cover

Auto shapes allowed me to create a puff for my front cover

Page 22: Evaluation

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used the stroke tool to add an outline to my font and make it stand out more.

I chose the colour that would be on the outline

Increasing the opacity allows the outline to become thicker

Page 23: Evaluation

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I created bands on my contents page to separate each different section

I used different colours to make my font stand out. I was able to change the different colours to customize each colour

Page 24: Evaluation

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The text is separated into different columns which I was able to cause them to flow into each other to create a seamless article

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used the website Slide share to upload my power points so that I could upload them to Blogger

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I uploaded all of my PowerPoint's onto the blog. This way they could all be presented easily and the blog would be easy to navigate.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the

full product?

I have learnt many different things since my preliminary task. Overall I was able to create a much different magazine to my original one. I have managed to completely redesign my front cover in a different way to the original one. I have stylised the fonts and added a much more complex font, this shows I have improved on my preliminary task and have learnt much more.

Page 28: Evaluation

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the

full product?

My contents page has been completely changed from the preliminary version. I have removed almost all dead space, which was a problem with my first contents page. I have however stuck to the bands around the title. On the contents page I feel that I have learned to use up more space and organise my titles more carefully.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the

full product?

Overall I would say that I have learnt quite a lot in the progression between my two magazines as they both are very different with obvious improvements between all of them. I think that I have learned to use the technology better and this has been reflected in my magazine.
