EVALUATION 2How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?
The social group I am going to be focusing on is the antagonists social group of male killers. We drew inspiration foR our antagonist from characters such as Luther from the TV show Luther, Vincent Vega from the film Pulp Fiction and John Wick from the film John Wick.
The Pulp Fiction character Vincent Vega played by John Travolta is
similar to our character in terms of their clothing and
jobs/occupations. We wanted our character to wear traditional villain
clothes; a black suit with a black tie. We also added an overcoat on the day of filming as we thought it made the outfit more 'offical' and sophisticated. Using this costume
makes you automatically stereotype him as a villain and
sets the character up easily within the short time period. The costume also represents cold efficiency, as well as formality. The dark colours connote death and danger which
reflects the
personality off the assassin. Both our character's and Vincent Vega's job is to kill people without questions asked and get the job done efficiently which is why we think that
our character are similar. They are both emotionally detached from their job which gives off a cold and stoic
impression.
The fact that the two characters are emotionally detached from
their job suggests that they have no connection to their victims and are only following orders from a higher chain of command. These are valuable personality traits to have in the jobs they are in as it means they are able to complete the job easily without emotions getting in the way which could
hinder their ability to kill. You can tell by the use of a gun that both of these characters are mature adults who are aware of the dangers their jobs involve. Guns connote death, danger and violence
so through the use of this social group- male killers- the audience is able to tell that these characters will bring
death, danger and violence to the film.
Sarah's costume was a direct juxtaposition to the assassins outfit;
colourful, casual and comfortable. The blouse is a traditional sign of innocence
and the lavender pattern connotes innocence and represents Sarah as sweet and pure. The cardigan emphasises this and shows that she is comfortable in the space. The torn jeans and boots show a rebellious, teenage side of her, shaping
her into a more realistic young girl.
Our character- Sarah is similar to Sarah Hart from the film I Am
Number 4 which was one of our inspirations for the plot of our thriller. They both represent a
young female social group. They are both victims of some sort- our character Sarah is assassinated
and the other character is thrown into dangerous situation in I Am
Number 4 which makes her a victim. They both have the same
name which is a traditional 'innocent' name. Their clothing is similar, a typical girly flowery top
which connotes innocence and purity- reflecting the personality of
the majority of the social group.
However, the Sarah in our thriller wears ripped jeans and combat boots which suggests a rebellious side and hints that she isn't just an ordinary girl. The way she handles the gun with ease gives off
the same impression which sets her apart from Sarah in I Am Number Four as that Sarah is an ordinary human being, whereas
the Sarah in our thriller is not.
