    Introduction

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) and shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum)

inhabit many rivers of the U.S. Atlantic coast, including many South Carolina Rivers. In 2013,

the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)-Savannah District committed to monitor the

distribution of sturgeon within the Savannah River Estuary as part of the Savannah Harbor

Expansion Project (SHEP). As a result, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources

(SCDNR) was contracted to conduct a telemetry study pre-construction, during construction, and

post-construction to collect movement data for both species of sturgeon and report findings to the

USACE. Detection data collected during this study was used to identify patterns of movement

regarding seasonal distribution and spawning migrations. This was accomplished through the

use of an array of 60 acoustic receivers that were able to detect both species of sturgeon tagged

with transmitters. Results of this multi-year study help indicate how the SHEP is affecting

populations of Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon in the Savannah River Watershed.

    Materials and Methods

    Sturgeon Captures

During study year-5, USACE reporting period (10/01/2017–9/30/2018), Atlantic and shortnose

sturgeon were captured by deploying anchored 92 meter (m) mono-filament sinking gill nets,

mesh sizes ranging from (7.62–35.56 centimeters (cm)) stretch mesh. Netting effort is defined in

“net hours” (net hour=one 92 m set for one hour). Nets were set during slack tides and allowed

to soak (30–60 minutes). Generally, soak times varied based on water temperature and dissolved

oxygen concentration, but all net sets adhered specifically to allowed specifications in the

Endangered Species Act (ESA) Section 10 (a) (1) (A) sampling permit. Water temperature,

  • 4

salinity, and dissolved oxygen were also recorded at each net set using a YSI PRO multi-

parameter handheld meter. In addition, monthly and daily water quality parameters were

collected at several sites by Phinizy Swamp Center for Water Sciences allowing continuous

water quality data to be provided throughout the study. All captured sturgeon were identified to

species, weighed to the nearest gram (g), measured to the nearest fork length (FL) and total

length (TL) in millimeters (mm), tagged with PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tags inserted

into the dorsal musculature and verified with both Avid Power tracker II and VIII readers, and

fin clip samples were collected for genetics analysis. Life history information (length, weight,

etc.) recorded for all captured sturgeon during the study is provided in Appendix 2. At each net

set location, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates (decimal degrees) as well as any

additional comments were recorded. Pictures of all captured fish were taken alongside an

accompanying white board containing all capture and/or tagging data. During work up of

captured fish, dissolved oxygen was monitored in the holding tank. If needed, supplemental

oxygen was provided via battery powered aerators. All transmitters were surgically implanted in

the abdominal cavity of Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon following published guidelines for the

location, size, and closure of the incisions as well as application of betadine ointment (Conte et

al. 1988; Fox et al. 2000; Cooke and Leach 2004; and Collins et al. 2000a).

During the study, annual established project targets for SCDNR were to capture and

insert up to 20 sonic transmitters into sturgeon (10 Atlantic sturgeon and 10 shortnose sturgeon)

in the Savannah River Estuary. The goal was split 50/50 between adult/sub adult and juvenile

Atlantic sturgeon and adult and juvenile shortnose sturgeon. Overall size of captured fish

determined which of two size transmitters or “tags” were used. Vemco V9 (9 mm diameter x 29

mm length) tags were inserted into juveniles (

  • 5

shortnose sturgeon). Vemco V16 (16 mm diameter x 158 mm length) tags were inserted into

adult/sub-adult fish (>800 mm FL Atlantic sturgeon and >600 mm FL shortnose sturgeon). In an

effort to locate fish that potentially emigrated from the Savannah River, all tagged sturgeon were

registered with the Atlantic Coast Telemetry (ACT) network.

    Sturgeon Movement and Tracking

To monitor sturgeon movement, an array of 60 fixed Vemco VR2W receivers remained

deployed from the river mouth through the Front (river kilometer [rkm] 0–331), Middle (rkm 0–

8), and Back (rkm 0–26) Rivers. Receivers were also strategically deployed in close proximity

to the Kings Island Turn Basin and the entrance to the Middle River (Figure 1). This was

previously determined to be important habitat for sturgeon (Collins et al. 2002). Efforts were

made to download receivers every few months, however, some receivers were downloaded less

due to extreme water level fluctuation. The tidal range in the study area is ~2.74 m during

normal conditions, but this can be significantly altered by isolated storms and even king tides. In

order to reduce receiver and/or data loss in this extremely dynamic environment, receiver

maintenance occurred on a routine basis. This involved cleaning and inspecting the condition of

the devices and, in some cases, redeploying associated riggings. Additionally, manual tracking

of tagged fish was performed with a Vemco VR-100 receiver each month from July through

September and at least quarterly for the remainder of the year. This was an effort to better

characterize detected locations for Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon in the Savannah River

Estuary, and to locate fish that might otherwise be inhabiting areas between receiver locations.

Tracking efforts consisted of deploying the hydrophone and listening for tagged animals every

0.3 kilometers which began on the Front River at Mill Stone Landing (rkm 54), and proceeded

  • 6

downriver to rkm 9.6. In an attempt to locate all sturgeon within the study area, manual tracking

also occurred in the Middle and Back Rivers. GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude),

temperature, salinity, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen profile at 1 m depth intervals were

recorded at each location when sturgeon were detected (Appendix 3). Per contract obligations

included in the statement of work, telemetry data (both from receivers and manual tracking) was

shared with the University of Georgia.

    Results

    Sturgeon Captures in Year-5

In study year-5, 90 nets were deployed resulting in 95.70 net hours of effort. Fifty-nine Atlantic

sturgeon were captured, of those 12 (7 sub/adults and 5 juveniles) were surgically implanted with

transmitters. Twenty-six shortnose sturgeon were captured, of those 10 (5 adults and 5 juveniles)

were surgically implanted with transmitters (Table 1). Length distribution histograms for

Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon captured in study year-5, and all years (1–5), are provided in

    Figures 2–4.

  • Sturgeon Movement and Tracking

    Shortnose Sturgeon

As was observed in previous Savannah River studies and SHEP years 1–5, shortnose sturgeon

utilized the Middle, Back, and Front River (near Kings Island Turn Basin) during months with

cooler water temperatures, and more frequently occurred in the upper Front River during months

with warmer water temperatures (Collins et al. 2002; Post et al. 2014). Most shortnose sturgeon

detected in this study did not emigrate the river and were frequently detected within the

Savannah River System in consecutive years.

From November through May, when water temperatures were cooler (5.7°C–25°C),

shortnose sturgeon were most frequently detected in the Middle River mouth, Back River, and

Front River (rkm 27–46) (Figure 5). During summer months, as water temperature began to

increase (20°C–30°C), transmitted shortnose sturgeon were most frequently detected in the Front

River (rkm 35–44) and near Abercorn Creek (rkm 46). Tagged shortnose sturgeon generally

remained in the Front River, (~rkm 46) until temperatures decreased, then returned to the Front

River (rkm 27–36), Back River, and Middle River mouth (Figures 6–10). During winter months,

both juvenile and adult shortnose sturgeon were detected regularly in the Middle and Back

Rivers, with some juveniles detected near the mouth of the Savannah River. In study years 1–5,

during late winter and early spring through March, 13 adult and two previously transmitted

juvenile shortnose sturgeon made presumed spawning runs to potential spawning habitat at ~rkm

    208 (Figure 6, 7).

    Atlantic Sturgeon

As was observed in previous Savannah River studies and SHEP years 1–5, Atlantic sturgeon

utilized the Front (near Kings Island Turn Basin), Middle, and Back Rivers during months with

cooler water temperatures, and more frequently, occurred in the Front River during months with

warmer water temperatures (Collins et al. 2002; Post et al. 2014). However, migration patterns

for adult/sub-adult and juvenile Atlantic sturgeon are far less predictable than those of shortnose

sturgeon. Atlantic sturgeon are much more likely to leave the river system and be detected by

other telemetry arrays located along the Atlantic Coast and within coastal rivers.

During winter and spring months, Atlantic sturgeon were detected in the Front River

(rkm 28–44), Back River, and Middle River mouth areas. Similarly, sub-adult and juvenile

Atlantic sturgeon used the Middle River with three sub-adult and nine juvenile Atlantic sturgeon

using the lower Back River (~rkm 6.4) during the colder months (Figures 11–15). Generally,

most adult fish leave the river system during summer months; however, others remain in the

river from the mouth (rkm 0) to Abercorn Creek (rkm 46). Still others leave the river system in

November and return the following April. Juvenile Atlantic sturgeon were detected during

summer months in Front River (~rkm 28) and Abercorn Creek (rkm 46). Others left the river

system during summer and early fall when temperatures exceeded 20°C. A decrease in

detections for adult and juvenile Atlantic sturgeon during summer months may indicate some

fish exited the system without being detected by the receiver array.

Adult (n=7) and juvenile (n=16) Atlantic sturgeon and adult (n=3) shortnose sturgeon

were detected on telemetry arrays maintained by other researchers located along the Atlantic

Coast and within coastal rivers (Table 2, Figure 16). All transmitted sturgeon were not detected

by the Savannah River receiver array every year, however, it is common for juvenile sturgeon to

be detected in the river year after year (Table 3). Two adult Atlantic sturgeon were observed

making potential spawning runs, one was located upriver during July (rkm 186) and the other

was detected within 15 rkm of New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam (NSBLD) in consecutive

years, July 2017 and October 2018 (Figure 11).

  • Manual Tracking

From October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018, manual tracking occurred in every month of

study year-5. Twelve manual tracking trips were conducted, and 30 Atlantic and 50 shortnose

sturgeon were detected (Appendix 3). Specific location and water quality parameters were

recorded each time a fish was detected. Dissolved oxygen recorded at every meter in depth

ranged from (3.04–10.83 milligram per liter (mg/l)). Manual tracking data were entered in a

project database and this information was also provided to colleagues at the University of

Georgia. Manual tracking efforts are scheduled to continue throughout the study.

    Discussion

During study year-5, 85 sturgeon were captured, of those 22 sturgeon (12 Atlantic sturgeon and

10 shortnose sturgeon) received transmitters. Sixty receivers were deployed within the entire

Savannah River System and downloaded every few months. One receiver was lost due to

possible vandalism or large debris moving downriver and six receivers were removed due to

receiver malfunctions, but were replaced. Additionally, manual tracking was carried out as

specified in the statement of work (monthly or quarterly). Analysis of tagged sturgeon

detections concluded that both Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon use the Front Savannah River

(rkm 27–35), Middle, and Back Rivers during the winter and early spring months. Both species

also use the Front Savannah River (rkm 27–46) in summer and fall months. Future years of

study should provide critical information on ongoing harbor deepening’s potential impacts to

Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon’s nursery habitat within the entire Savannah River System.

Additionally, Savannah River shortnose sturgeon continue to be found in both fresh and

saltwater areas, with some fish residing in Middle River (0.0–6.0 part per thousand (ppt) salinity)

during winter months. Conversely, in the northern portion of this species’ range, from the

Hudson River and Saint John River, shortnose sturgeon apparently utilize freshwater habitats

more extensively, with some segments of the populations remaining in fresh water throughout

the year (Dadswell 1979; Buckley and Kynard 1985).

Juvenile Atlantic sturgeon occurred in similar habitats as shortnose sturgeon, but with a

wider range and utilized more downstream portions of the river (rkm
