Definition The word "euthanasia" was first used in a medical context by Francis Bacon in the 17th century, to refer to an easy, painless, happy death, during which it was a "physician's responsibility to alleviate the 'physical sufferings' of the body."
![Page 5: Euthanasia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070314/554da4cfb4c905047b8b48f2/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Indian law Passive euthanasia is legal in India. On 7 March 2011 the Supreme Court of India legalised passive euthanasia by means of the withdrawal of life support to patients in a permanent vegetative state.
Drugs usedTypically, three drugs are used in succession to perform euthanasia: Sodium thiopental is used to induce unconsciousness; Pancuronium bromide (Pavulon) to cause muscle paralysis and respiratory arrest; and Potassium chloride to stop the heart.

General Christian view
Christians are mostly against euthanasia. They believe that:Life is a gift from God:• All life is God-given• Birth and death are part of the life
processes which God has created, so we should respect them
• Therefore no human being has the authority to take the life of any innocent person, even if that person wants to die
![Page 15: Euthanasia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070314/554da4cfb4c905047b8b48f2/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The Roman Catholic view
• Euthanasia is a grave violation of the law of God, since it is the deliberate and morally unacceptable killing of a
human person. Pope John Paul II, Evangelium
Vitae, 1995
![Page 16: Euthanasia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070314/554da4cfb4c905047b8b48f2/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• The church has said that:
Nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent
human being, whether a foetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old
person, or one suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is
dying.
