Mark Kucharovic Facebook Friend My old Mk1 GTI: the previous owner left the window open so between the smell of damp carpets and seats, the possum that made a home out of it and two dead mice, it made a porta-potty more appealing.

Justin Fivella Words We hid a dead snake inside a friend’s sub box. It smelt so bad a week later he threw up while driving and parked it for six months until the stench was gone because he could never find the source of the smell.

Josh Brown Snapper In NYC Chinatown I saw half a shark sitting on the sidewalk in 100˚ heat; it was pretty rough.

Alex Rogan Words Having been on a few assignments with Josh, I can assure you his ‘travel stomach’ can be hard to take...

Sam Du Features Ed Besides Justin’s cubicle... When I was in school, I was trapped in a Volvo on the way to a basketball game. It smelled like a mix of rotten eggs, wet carpet, dirty gym clothes and dog feces.

Greg Emmerson Editor I was gifted a flying lesson. It was a small plane, hot day and the instructor stunk. An open window blew the smell across me. I started to gag but he thought it was airsickness. I never tried flying again, although I have taken a few ladies to heaven and back!

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever smelt?

Meisha Ciau Web I have a cat that likes to chew wires. I often come home to a combination of burning plastic, scalded fur and cat pee.

FROM DESERT TO OCEAN IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT VW.

Greg Emmerson , Editor

[email protected]

EDITOR’S LETTER

BEHINDTHE WHEEL

It’s been quite a month. We traversed the

continent looking for the perfect VW, and

we’re happy to report we found more than

we could handle.

Our first stop was a dusty desert lakebed

to witness 034Motorsport’s GTI RS come

to life. We’d been talking to the team about

building the car ever since we handed them

the trophy for winning last year’s event.

Since then we’ve offered advice on vehicle

selection, color schemes, etc but the build

quality and level of engineering exceeded our

expectations, especially since the paint was

still drying and the engine had fired for the

first time a few days prior.

Hopefully, 034 won’t mind us divulging

that we had to persuade them to lower the

car and fit wider spacers to get the stance

right. They build racecars, and it won’t look

this way when it hits the track for etGP.

But we wanted everybody to see how good

the GTI could look...

As usual, there’s video footage at

eurotuner.com and youtube.com/eurotuner

You can turn to

our Online Video

listing in this issue

to discover what

else is on the sites.

SEASIDE Working for this

company, I’ve

attended more

import shows

than I’m comfortable to admit. And while

the imports put the emphasis on commerce;

ensuring you get a bang for your buck by

adding girls, DJs, professional judges, laser

shows, dance-offs, rap contests, etc, it makes

me realize the Euro scene has so much more

substance: and all that’s good about our

niche is perhaps best exemplified by H2O.

Although I’ve never competed for a

trophy at a car show, it seems to me the

Euro scene is more about community than

awards. Whether it’s Bimmerfest, Waterfest,

H2Oi or wherever; the events bring

everybody together, from discussing plans

online to caravanning with friends and even

parking together.

Since H2O’s location is relatively remote

and the area fairly small, it feels as if we’ve

taken over the town. Everywhere you look

there are enough GTIs, Rabbits, S4s and

Jettas to sink the island.

With so many VAG products buzzing

around, serenading you as you eat and sleep,

it makes you realize we might be a small

niche, but we’re a large community united

in our love of our cars, willing to help each

other and have fun together.

There were times, when the Mustangs

and imports weren’t buzzing the strip, that all

you could see and hear were European cars

and Euro enthusiasts. If time stood still at

that moment and we could create a utopian

island where imports and domestics weren’t

allowed, it would be alright by me!

RAIN Another star of this issue has to be Sukh

Pui’s Corrado VRT. He’s one of the original

members of the highly influential Westside

crew from West London – a group of Euro

guys who know how to build cars and

support each other.

I’ve known many of them for years and

was delighted to discover that Patrick, Sukh

and some of the other Westside members

followed eurotuner from rainy olde England.

They liked it enough to offer us some of their

cars that haven’t been seen before.

Not only did Sukh let us shoot the car but

Matt Barnes did a great job with the camera.

And it’s his first time writing an article, so

we’re especially honored.

MESH There’s a huge debate at present about the

BBS RS wheel. I had a set of these on an old

E30 BMW 323i back in the day, and still feel

it’s perhaps the best Euro wheel around.

It’s also the wheel that started the trend

for custom fitments, finishes and offsets –

I had gold-centered BBS RS before JDM

had been invented, so let’s not pretend the

Japanese started it…

Whether you like it or not, the RS has

become a hallowed tradition, a mainstay of

the European car scene. It’s also spawned

a million derivatives, with the BBS LM and

CH still being among our favorites.

To celebrate the rich diversity and the

awesome quality of the mesh wheels that

are currently available, Sam gathered a

selection of the best designs for our Mesh

Wheel Guide in this issue.

We shot the wheels at the local beach for

some variety, but were horrified to discover

one had been stolen!

Quite what the retard will do with a single

SSR is beyond us. And the scumbag will

undoubtedly be disappointed to discover it’s

a Euro fitment, since he was almost certainly

an import guy! (Joke… maybe)

PUGHWhile we were at H2O, I had the chance to

catch up with lots of old friends, including

Rich Pugh and John Hazel, formerly of VW

Sport (1552 Design). John is currently at

Electrodyne while Rich, after working his

way through some of the East Coast’s VW

tuner shops, and opening his own skateboard

shop, is now co-owner of Johnny Rad’s in

Fells Point, Baltimore.

Locals may have known it as Kelly’s, but

it’s a pizzeria tavern with a brick-lined oven

serving 45 local and draught beers. With

Rich’s famous love of food, they’ve got a

great menu and we’d encourage any Euro

fans to pay them a visit if you’re in the area.

If nothing else, you’ll be well-fed and can

quiz Rich on ’90s VWs; he’s encyclopedic.

TUNERNEWS THE LATEST NEWS, PRODUCTS AND RUMORS...

1. SUB BOXES Kicker • MSRP: starting at $179.95 Info: kicker.comWith so many options available when shopping for subwoofer setups, it’s hard to know where to start. Kicker makes it easy and affordable with their Comp-Loaded Sub Boxes. Combining a gray-carpeted box with carbon fiber face and single or dual Comp subwoofers, quality plug-n-play bass is wrapped into one simple package. The boxes are available in dual-10 and -12’’, single-12 and slim-mounted 10’’ options.

2. WHEEL SPACERS Black Forest Industries • MSRP: $79 Info: blackforestindustries.comWheel spacers can subtly change the look of your ride by pushing the wheels out to improve the stance – the H&R items we fitted to our Project M3 certainly made a difference. Black Forest Industries now carries 5mm and 10mm spacers for the B8 A4/S4 and A5/S5 platforms. These will also fit other models with a 66.6mm centerbore and 5x112 bolt pattern. Whether you just want to add some offset to your stock rollers, or make those concaves looks that much meaner, check them out at Black Forest Industries.

3. AUDI 2.7T INTAKE 034 Motorsport • MSRP: $369-514 Info: 034motorsport.comTurbo engines work best with clean, dense, cold air. And this is especially true of the Audi 2.7T engine with its twin turbochargers. So 034Motorsport’s X1 intake for the 2.7T ensures you get the best performance out of your engine while adding a sense of style under the hood. Available with either a carbon fiber or fiberglass heatshield, the kit includes an AEM dry-flow filter and all mounting hardware. The kit is claimed to suit applications up to 800hp.

4. PARKING TARGET Innovative Products • MSRP: $9.99 Info: parkingtarget.comDo you have a tennis ball hanging from the garage ceiling to tell you when to stop? Or do you rely on bumping into the wall to know when you’ve gone far enough? And has this method ever backfired, leaving you with a scratched bumper? Innovative Products’ Parking Target means you’re able to park in the perfect spot every time. The simple peel-n-stick parking aid can be stuck to the floor, allowing you to guide your car over it and rest assured you’re in the correct spot. Only one is needed per car, and the Parking Targets come with a variety of bright decals to make them easy to see and even identify different users.

We tried these and they certainly make it easier to park in a tight garage. With our carbon splitters, we didn’t want to be nudging up to the concrete barrier, so the Parking Target means we can stop in the perfect place each time. However, we chose to bump up to the Target rather than drive over it. And you have to ensure your floor is clean and degreased so it sticks properly. But once you start using the simple device it works really well - Greg

2.slowReally? You guys had to put the Mk3/5

Cabby/GTI in your magazine (et 10/10)?

Yuck! I feel bad for people who destroy

Mk3s. Hopefully, he can take the front of the

Mk3 and weld it to the back of a Mk5.

Anyway, thanks for Project 2.slow. After

years of calling my Mk3 Golf a sh*t box, my

husband has finally realized the car has some

potential... but, of course, he had to see it in a

magazine and couldn’t take my word for it.

Thank you for turning my “nagging” into our

new project!

Jan Harris Ashburn, VA

CommunityMy husband Dan and I were at Waterfest this

summer and joined in the Kreuzerfest rally

from VWoA. This meant we got a chance to

do some laps of the Englishtown road course

at the end. Everything went great until the

last lap when our car wouldn’t shift out of

fifth gear. So we pulled off and tried to figure

out what had happened. After a short while,

Greg Emmerson came over and looked at

our car. He wasn’t sure what was going on

but made a few phone calls on our behalf.

We ended up visiting APR’s booth where a

friendly man fixed the car.

It turns out some chunky piece of the

shift linkage had jumped off. Fortunately, it

took two minutes to fix. That said; we were

1000 miles from home with no idea what

happened to our car. We’d been parked out

of the way and everybody could have easily

left without saying anything, but that wasn’t

the case.

It may not have been a big deal for Greg,

but those phone calls probably saved us a

nice chunk of money, hours of frustration

and a clutch, since that would have burned

out if we’d had to drive anywhere. This is

one of the many reasons we love not only

the VW community but also eurotuner! We

didn’t see him at the show but wanted to

make sure he knew how grateful we were for

what he did. And thanks to APR as well.

Felicia & Dan Gauthier Manitowoc, WI

The Feds I was reading the article about future

legislation as it relates to our tuning hobby

(et 10/10) and it seems like there isn’t

anywhere the Feds aren’t sticking their noses

in and preventing us from doing what we

want to our own cars. It seems like not a

week goes by without one of my friends or I

getting stopped by the police for a loud

exhaust, window tint or some other BS. Why

don’t they just leave us alone? It’s not like

we’re hurting anybody. And because I spend

all my money on my car I don’t have enough

left to be out drinking every night and getting

into fights. My car keeps me on the straight

and narrow but it seems like I get in more

trouble because of it than if I was a stoner

or something.

Dave Price Newark, NJ

We feel your frustration. As the story stated, many

of the laws are there for safety reasons, but many

are also left to the interpretation of individual police

officers, which is often what causes the problem

because there is an inconsistency of enforcement.

If you want to do something about, you could join

something like the SEMA Action Network and have

your voice heard in trying to make these laws practical

and reasonable.

Drag I love your magazine. It’s great to see

Euros in print rather than run-of-the-mill

musclecars and Asian tuners. However, while

the eye-candy is nice, it can be too much. The

air bags and shaved bays all end up being

the same after a while, although that seems

to be the trend… This is especially apparent

in the Readers’ Rides section, where most

of the cars seem to have the same software,

rims and suspension. It would be nice to

see a section that features drag cars, like

the ones from the Waterfest 16 (et 10/10),

whether they are from here or anywhere

else in the world.

Greg Somaio Norwood, MA

Digging I was digging through my parents basement

to find some lost treasure when I came

across a box of all my old car magazines. To

my delight, I found some old Max Power

magazines from way back in the day when I

started getting into Euros.

Max Power was eurotuner before

eurotuner was eurotuner. I started with Max

Power back in 6/00 according to my oldest

issue and I’ve gotta say, you guys have come

a long way. Those old issues are a mix of

color and B&W, and there was even a feature

on a Toyota Solara!

I departed from the Euro scene and

eurotuner for a little while when I had

experienced Initial D many years ago, but

I’m back and couldn’t be happier. I’m really

loving a lot of what you guys are doing,

especially the wacky Scandinavian specials

and your broad coverage of both new and

old Euro models. Great work guys.

Oh, and I’m happy to report that after

scanning the 6/00 issue of Max Power, there

were zero sets of BBS RS rims and no

air-ride in sight. How times have changed!

Logan Tanner Lindon, UT

Tats & Nails We met Lisa Maria Rios from Hampton, VA

(originally The Bronx) at H2Oi. She wanted

to show us her body art that took the form

of VW-themed tattoos and fingernails, so we

snapped a few photos.

The nails were apparently done at a local

salon after she took a copy of eurotuner in

with her. The artist was obviously gifted and

even got the VW roundel to appear 3D.

On Lisa’s wrist you’ll notice a VW Fast

tattoo, while her shoulder has a VW logo

with a ’79 Rabbit running through it, which

must be to commemorate her own car –

I forget… Sorry.

Lisa’s definitely a diehard VW fan and

a member of Dub Kulture car club in VA.

Fox Racer Most people’s first VW is usually a Golf

or Jetta. Not for Joseph Machado from

Florida, though. His first VW is this ’88

Fox Wagon. “I want to keep the car as

original as possible to have a clean look,” he told us.

That doesn’t mean it won’t have power: his goal is 400hp

from a 2.slow ABA 8v with forged crank and rods plus Ross

Racing pistons to lower the compression to 8:1. The motor will

be secured with ARP hardware, then boosted with a Garrett

T3/T4 57-trim turbo on a Kinetic manifold. Fueling will be via

a Walbro fuel pump and 440cc injectors. He’s planning to use a

3'' downpipe and exhaust to

expel spent gases.

As for the pretty bits, he’s

updated the exterior with

shaved lights and antenna,

Mk3 handles, smoked tail

lights and a black repaint.

He’s also built his own

coilovers and sourced old

school 16'' TSW wheels.

Notchback VR6Last month, we introduced a slightly

more unusual Garage Project to you.

Air-cooled enthusiasts may be excited

to see this classic ’65 Notchback being

brought back to life. Aaron Simon from

West Virginia is using modern VW parts

to rebuild a co-worker’s old parts-car. His

original plan was to use a 2.8-liter VR6

with air-cooled running gear, but he ran

into obstacles with the suspension, brakes

and transmission. To remedy the situation,

he’s created a mid-engine design utilizing

the firewall and part of the floor from a

’94 Passat. He then fabricated frame rails

using 2x3'' tubing to tie the front and rear

subframes together. An eight-point rollcage

strengthens the chassis thanks to Rolling

Chassis in NY.

The front brakes use upgraded Passat

parts utilizing 11'' Brembo rotors and OE

calipers. For the rear, Mk4 337 calipers

were fitted on custom mounts. It also has a

Corrado master cylinder and booster, plus

braided lines. Weitec XS struts and springs

were then fitted all round.

With rolling chassis

complete, the body has

taken shape. Aaron

fabricated a 3'' widebody

using Mk2 Golf fenders

up front. The rears are

a combination of three

different fenders to create

the desired effect. The final

finish is satin black paint

from Summit Racing.

Stay tuned for a full

feature soon.

GARAGE PROJECTS

Martin Mk4Justin Martin is going for broke – literally!

His ’01 VW Jetta 1.8T has been in the

making for six years. But it’s nearing

completion as his hard-earned money

turns into parts for the big-turbo project.

“The car will be tuned to 400hp on the

dyno once the clutch is bedded-in. This is

only the beginning, however. I have much

more in mind, such as liquid CO2 cooling, water/meth injection,

plasma ignition and rebuilt turbo experimentation,” he explained.

When all is said and done, Justin is shooting for 600-750hp range.

As of now, the 1.8T is from an ’04 GTI, fitted with Integrated

Engineering rods. For power, a Garrett GT2871R turbo is mated

to an ATP manifold. Finishing the package is a 2.5'' downpipe,

ATP intake, Frozen Boost air-to-water

intercooler, Spec stage 3+ clutch and ECS

Tuning pulleys. Justin is waiting on software,

injectors and stronger axles. Once he has these

we hope to see the initial dyno numbers.

Over the years many seminal cars have been

built that have altered the course of the Euro

scene and influenced what came after it. You

probably have your favorites but I’m thinking

of the firsts: the first Mk1 VR6, first twin-

engined Mk1, first Mk2 VR6, first Mk4 Jetta coupe, etc.

These cars weren’t about bolt-ons and fancy paint. They

took genuine engineering ability and got people thinking

about what was really possible.

In our opinion, we’re witnessing another of those

seminal moments today. With this incredible machine,

034Motorsport is taking it up a notch. Turning it up to

eleven, if you will…

In six short years, 034Motorsport in Fremont, CA has been

transformed from fledging wrench-monkeys to one of the

premier tuning shops in the country; dare we say the world?

And if you’re a regular reader, you’ve witnessed greatness

happening before your eyes because the company’s growth

has been directly linked to eurotuner magazine. How so?

The company was formed in 2004 and entered an Audi

Coupe in the ’05 eurotuner GP event. The following year the

Coupe was joined by an Audi 80. In ’07 they modernized

their GP entry with a B5 Audi A4 fitted with a 12v VR6

turbo. The next year it was converted to 24v and last year

they swept the board, winning the dyno, drag and circuit

disciplines to be the 2009 etGP champions.

What makes 034 remarkable isn’t that they throw a lot

of money at a problem. Rather, they have the intelligence,

ingenuity and persistence to solve problems within their

budget constraints. Each time something failed, they made it

better, and then track tested it to ensure durability. Nothing

was left to chance. They’re undoubtedly the most organized

and dedicated team that’s ever entered our event. And they

don’t take a conservative approach. Last year’s winning dyno

run was 908whp, and the A4 clocked a 10.7sec quarter-mile

time on street tires.

VW GTI

Despite the earlier success, we predict this new car will bring them global attention. Not only have they built a mid-engined GTI with a hyper-powerful Audi S4 2.7, but they’re going to put it to use. This isn’t a show queen that will disappear in a year’s time. It’s going to compete in etGP and will then graduate to time attack events.

“On our way home from the ’09 event we discussed what we should do next year,” explained Javad Shadzi, president of 034, describing a conversation with Christian Miller, the team’s driver and touring car hotshoe.

“The problem with GP is that the multiple disciplines require a compromised approach. You need weight and displacement for the dyno and drag, yet still have to perform on the track.

“With all the A4’s weight up front, we felt it would be better to have it in the middle, so thought about going rear-wheel drive since it made the most sense for a mid-engined configuration,” Javad continued.

SALVAGE

With a strong following, the Mk4 Golf GTI made the obvious donor car since they were relatively cheap and there was plenty of space in the rear for an engine. To turn the concept into reality, 034 purchased a salvaged ’01 GTI for $1000 back in 1/10. By February the interior, engine and suspension had been stripped. By March they were fabricating the engine cradle.

With the A4 running a VW engine, 034 perversely decided to squeeze an Audi lump into the GTI. “We have a good following for our 2.7T tuning program, where we can easily get 600-700whp but felt it had the potential for 1000whp,” Javad explained. “And with the V6 being relatively short, it was ideal for the GTI installation. As it is, we only have about 1'' between the engine and the roll-bar, so we couldn’t have used anything longer.”

Having settled on an engine, it needed a transmission. They discovered the B5 S4’s 01E six-speed gearbox was also available in 2WD form in a European Audi 100 diesel: perfect for this application.

The engine and trans were bolted together, positioned into the car and the cradle was built around it. Knowing the car would need extensive development, the cradle was engineered so that it’s held with only four bolts, meaning the engine and trans can be removed in about 30min if necessary.

A rollcage was fabricated at the same time. It’s NHRA-approved, so the team won’t encounter problems if the car drops into the 10s on the quarter-mile. It also supports the car, binding the front and rear subframes together for rigidity.

The next obstacle was the rear suspension and axle location. The team initially looked at a Noble sportscar and considered fabricating their own double wishbone arrangement, but after comparing it to a Porsche 911, they simply bought the rear-end of a 996 Turbo.

This included the subframe, suspension arms, links, knuckles, calipers, rotors, wheels etc.

One of the first surprises was that the 996 axles bolted straight to the 01E and were even the correct length for the car. So they got on with mounting the suspension and adding high-end Ohlins coilovers. At present the sway bars are stock but they have the option of fitting any aftermarket Porsche upgrades.

The same is true at the front, where the 911’s MacPherson struts bolted into the Golf’s hubs once the Ohlins bodies had been machined a few thousandths. And with 13'' 996 rear brakes, 993 Turbo calipers were

bolted to the front with Audi RS2 mounting brackets and custom 034 drilled rotors.

The front hubs required H&R adapters to fit the stock 18x8'' 996T Twist wheels. They had intended to leave the front track stock and widen only the rear fenders to accommodate the 18x11'' rear wheels. However, the bodywork didn’t look right when they tried it, and a wider front track would aid stability, so 2'' spacers were added. These were increased to 2.5'' for our photos to ensure the wheels filled the fenders, but don’t expect the stance to be quite so aggressive when it runs in etGP10 (appearing in et 2/11).

MOTOR

To prepare the V6, it was fitted with a 92.8mm

forged crank from the Audi A6 3.0. The

capacity was then stretched to 3013cc with

custom 83mm JE pistons on Pauter rods.

The assembly was balanced to ±1g before the

bearings were coated to reduce friction.

The heads got 034’s stage three porting

that uses 1mm larger valves with Supertech

springs and retainers to maximize the lift from

the 264/250˚ Cat cams without coil-binding.

As before, the team plan a turbo swap for

etGP, so quick changes were engineered into

the custom bracket for the top-mount system.

Using a T04 inlet flange on both turbos means

they don’t need to swap the manifold when

they switch between a Garrett GT45R (as

photographed) for the GP’s dyno and drag

racing, with a Precision GT35R used on the

road course for better acceleration.

The smaller snail has the potential for

650whp, while the big turbo should produce

around 1000whp if all goes to plan…

The exhaust manifold feeds into a 4'' pipe

that splits into two 3'' pipes. And while the

GT35R application will get a muffler, the 45R

doesn’t. And yet the noise was surprisingly

muted, as you can hear on our online videos.

Obviously a front-mounted intercooler

wouldn’t be ideal for the mid-mounted engine,

so the car has an air-to-water chargecooler

system with a massive heat exchanger up

front. With the length of hose and a

four-gallon reservoir, the electric pump

moves about six gallons through the system

VW GTI

to maintain charge temps.

The giant 6'' AEM cone filter in the photos

will be replaced by a K&N in a sealed airbox

for the dyno. It will be fed cold air through

the passenger-side NACA duct on the rear

to minimize power loss through heat

build-up. The second duct is used to circulate

air through the engine compartment.

Acting as a counterweight, the engine

bay houses a 10-gallon fuel cell. That fills a

one-gallon surge tank equipped with twin

fuel pumps to avoid fuel starvation under

cornering. These in turn feed the 850cc

injectors that have been programmed to run

at a higher pressure with the bigger turbo

rather than changing them.

The injection, ignition, boost, cooling

fans and variable cam timing is managed

by an 034EFI Stage IIC computer that also

allows anti-lag and gear-based boost control

to help with the GP’s drag racing. However,

an additional Bosch ME7 ECU controls the

drive-by-wire Audi S8 throttle-body. Not

only does it allow the engineers to control

throttle opening angles and speed, but it also

eradicated the need for extended throttle

cables in the engine compartment.

BODY

With so much power, the 11” wide hollow-

spoke Porsche rear wheels should allow the

GTI RS to find traction, but they had to be

suitably covered. So Rolf By Design was given

the task of fabricating the widebody fenders.

In order to keep the original shape, he cut

off the outer fenders and then cut slits in the

remaining metalwork. The resulting tabs were

bent out, filled and welded together. Finally,

the original outer fender was welded back into

place to keep the OE look.

A pair of R32 bumpers were then extended

with the end pieces from the original GTI

bumpers in order to increase the width and

match the new fenders.

With the NACA ducts grafted into the

sides, the car went to Coelho’s Bodyshop

for the Ford silver metalflake paint. The

wheels were originally painted to match, but

damage inflicted during tire fitting meant they

were repainted with extra black to create a

gunmetalflake mix.

Contrasting red paint was used on the

rollcage to match the Porsche brakes and GT3

RS-style body graphics. The remainder of the

interior was treated to an aluminum and lexan

firewall that still needs to be sealed. There’s

also a pair of R32 seats and steering wheel

up front, along with a 996T shifter and

cable linkage.

Following our photo shoot, the car has an

intensive schedule of dynomometer tuning in

order to optimize the electronics for the two

different turbochargers. It’s then got two track

tests booked at Infineon Raceway as well as

drag racing to check it all works.

Just like the Audi A4 that preceded it, this

034 GTI RS will be fully prepped in the time

remaining. So check out the online videos and

don’t miss the 2/11 issue where you can see

how it fared in the eurotuner GP 2010.

VW CORRADO

W e’re waiting on a cold,

cobbled street corner

in London’s East End;

a stones throw from

the River Thames. Add

some fog and a few cheerful Cockneys and

we could be in a Sherlock Holmes movie.

We’re waiting for Sukh Pui and his

Corrado. Their arrival is announced by a

menacing rumble, punctuated by the whistle

of a turbo as it tiptoes over speed humps.

The Iris blue SLC rounds the corner

and the full impact of Sukh’s project can be

seen, lower than a snake’s ass and bluer than

Adriana Lima’s eyes.

A resident of West London, England and a

founder member of the original Westside VW

crew, Sukh’s an electronics engineer who’s

been soaked in the Veedub scene virtually

since its inception. The list of former rides

is long and distinguished; he came to his

Corrado ten years ago by way of a Mk1 GTI,

Mk1 Scirocco, Mk2 16v, Corrado G60, a few

Audis, Passat, a TT and a brief fling with a

Porsche – he doesn’t want to talk about that!

Sukh’s job frequently takes him to

mainland Europe, and at the turn of the

millennium he decided to go to the source

to find the right car. He discovered his ’92

Corrado on mobile.de; Deutschland’s ‘größter

fahrzeugmarkt’. But surprisingly, this particular

Corrado was originally registered in the good

ol’ US of A. Virginia, to be precise!

“Once I found the car I had a mate call

the owner since I don’t speak German. We

arranged a viewing and flew over. The owner

kept it in a barn, so his cat slept on it. He

bought it to work on but never got round

to it,” Sukh told us. “It was a reddish-brown

color with a 2.8 VR6 rather than the 2.9L

found in Europe. The owner had bought a

set of 16x10'' Edition S1 wheels, but couldn’t

fit them until the fenders were widened. We

couldn’t agree on a price, so I left it. Once

back in London, I called the owner a few

times and we finally made a deal.”

PLAN

Sukh had a plan… “I had good contacts in

the Dutch and German scenes, and back then

the British Pound was strong against the Euro,

so it made sense to get the work done over

there.” So he used his network of friends to

get the car built.

First, it went to Alex Smith in Germany

for bodywork including those incredible,

handcrafted metal fenders, Audi A6 door

handles and a 993 brake-light beautifully

integrated into the tailgate.

“Germany was ahead of us [Britain] back

then; nobody fitted A6 handles on a Corrado.

The trouble was, after he’d done it I had to

connect them up. It took me two weeks and

some seriously scraped knuckles to finally

sort out the linkages. I needed to make the

handles open the doors without putting too

much pressure on the micro-switches, because

they controlled the SLC’s electric seatbelts,”

Sukh explained.

The Corrado then went to Holland for

paint at NAZ Bodyworks in Zutphen.

“It had to be Porsche Iris blue,” he told us.

“I’ve always loved that color.”

After this, Sukh fitted the H&R coilovers

that gave him the 120mm (4.7'') drop he

wanted, while the new fenders enabled the

car to accommodate the extra-wide Edition

S1 wheels.

conversion, the car was shown to acclaim

in 2003: “It was the first Corrrado with 10''

wide wheels in the UK,” Sukh claimed, but

he already had plans for ’04…

This time he wanted the interior mods, so

loaded his van with the Corrado’s dash and a

pair of R32 seats before making the 600-mile

trip to Uwe Trim House in Germany.

Sukh had decided on Porsche Sahara

brown leather for the seats, door cards,

dashboard and console, with the headliner

and roof pillars in matching alcantara. Not

afraid to admit a mistake, he later swapped

back to the original Recaros: “they were just

better seats!” he told us.

Satisfied with the appearance, extra grunt

was now needed. So the owner prepared to fit

a supercharger but sold it at the last minute in

favor of turbo power – and a couple of friends

in Europe helped him out; Markus Heerdegen

and Micheal Schomaker.

“It was the best thing I ever did!” Sukh

announced. “Markus sourced an HGP turbo

kit in Germany while Michael and I did the

conversion in Holland. We then took it to JD

Engineering in Lochem for an ECU re-map

Dash, doors, Recaros and console trimmed in Porsche Sahara brown leather

Rear seat deleted, replaced by rear cage, Precision amp and Kicker sub Matching alcantara headliner

but found the timing was out. I wanted to

keep it on the OBD1 Bosch ECU and the

Dutch are brilliant at that. So once they sorted

out the problems it ran fine.”

On the dyno it produced 380bhp at

4600rpm and 340 lb-ft of torque at 1-bar

(15psi) of boost. “I’ve tried running it 1.4 and

1.7 bar, but it just became undrivable,” he

laughed. “It’s quicker with less boost and far

more controllable.”

The main ingredients of the HGP turbo

kit consisted of a Garrett GT32 turbo, front-

mount intercooler, Mocal oil-cooler and

short-runner intake manifold.

After its installation, the engine bay didn’t

escape the beautician either. The motor

and transmission were sprayed black, while

anything else was chromed or polished to a

high shine. It was at this point he added a

carbon fiber rain tray cover and slam panel.

He also decided to do more bodywork,

drilling the front bumper to aid airflow to

the FMIC, and fitting a debadged grille with

built-in eyebrow spoiler above it. Other mods

included deleting the side moldings, rear

wiper, antenna and side markers.

AUTOBAHN

The owner is a hard man to get hold of,

regularly flying to Europe for work. With all

that travel, you might expect him to spend

weekends at home, but instead Sukh’s

summer is spent visiting European shows in

the SLC. “I started going to shows back in

the ’90s, such as the original VW Mania in

Belgium and the VW Treffen in Baarlo in my

old Mk1; the Dutch were way ahead of us

back then. My favorite shows now are MIVW,

Edition 38, Players and, of course, Wörthesee.

“The 1100-mile trip back from Wörthesee

last year was the furthest I’ve driven in one

day. A lot of it was on unrestricted Autobahns,

and that’s what my Corrado was built for – it

went past 160mph on the GPS and I was told

to slow down at a toll station in France when

they calculated my time between stations!”

he laughed.

On those long trips, you need an exhaust

with a great note on acceleration, but

without the brain-numbing drone we’ve all

experienced. After a stainless steel Bastuck

system was installed, it solved all his sound

problems except one; ICE. To prevent cabin

fever on long-haul trips, Sukh armed the

Corrado with an Alpine head unit. He then

deleted the rear seat and fitted a Precision

Power amp under the polished rear rollcage.

It runs a 10'' Kicker sub in the middle of the

trunk, while Infinity 6.5'' components deal

with the mid and high frequencies.

Having done so much work over 10 years,

Sukh decided to swap the wheels. He sold the

S1s and after an agonizing decision went for

a set of 17'' Porsche Turbo Twist wheels from

Andre Kain’s famous “UPS” Corrado.

Shod with narrow Bridgestone SO2 tires,

they fit over the 993 GT2 four-piston front

calipers that clamp 325mm (12.8'') grooved

rotors. The rear brakes were converted to

larger 288mm (11.3'') rotors with the stock

Corrado calipers.

So what has ten years of Sukh-refinement

produced? An utterly reliable ride that runs

like a rocket, with a magic-carpet ride that

sounds like the devil and looks like a

wet-dream. Next time you’re working on

your car, don’t be in such a hurry to get it

done. Take your time to come up with an

enduring machine.

And what does the future hold for Sukh’s

SLC? “This is as far as the Corrado will go,”

he told us. “It’s up for sale and needs the right

home, but it will fund my new TT project,

which I’ve already kicked off with some major

wheels.” Watch this space!

InterA LOOK BACK AT ANOTHER AWESOME H2Oi WEEKEND.

WORDS, PHOTOS, VIDEO GREG EMMERSON, SAM DU, JOSH BROWN

34 eurotuner december

Earlier this year, it appeared

H2O International 2010 was in

jeopardy. A date hadn’t been set

and construction work at the

Ocean Downs Racetrack venue in

Ocean City, MD meant trouble was afoot.

Fortunately, Jay Shoup and his merry

band of helpers saved the day. They

announced business as usual, with only a

small area of asphalt lost to the bulldozers.

As a result, most of the vendors were

relocated along the access road, with VW

and APR sharing the asphalt apron with the

Top Dawg contestants.

The hardworking marshals got everybody

parked in the correct areas and H2Oi ’10

went off without a hitch. A couple of brief

rain showers during Sunday contrasted

the heat and humidity of Saturday but did

nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of visitors.

As usual, Saturday featured live bands

and a chill atmosphere in preparation for the

car show judging on Sunday. The “best of

the best” were again invited to participate in

Top Dawg – an invite-only event where the

top cars at H2Oi are corralled for separate

judging. The winner receives $1000 for their

efforts and bragging rights for a lifetime, since

this is probably the ultimate prize in the

North American VW scene.

Saturday night saw the third annual Air

Affair – a gathering of air-ride fetishists in a

small shopping-plaza parking lot. The event

has grown each year and the lot was soon

emptied by a fire marshal who felt we were a

danger to ourselves. It certainly indicates the

strength of the movement and perhaps the

need for a dedicated air-ride show…

We’ll have a report from Air Affair in next

month’s issue, along with features on some of

our favorite rides from H2Oi ’10, including a

good portion of the Top Dawg competitors.

In fact, we were delighted to discover we had

featured or photographed 70% of the top

competitors – not bad for our little rag!

The deserving winner of Top Dawg was

our own Derek Baker with his stunning Mk2

Jetta VR6 featuring a cream-colored shaved

bay and matching RS wheels.

We first featured the car in et 1/08 but

its due a return visit since he’s done a lot

of work since.

It amazes me that people complain that “a shaved bay and RS wheels” is formulaic. As if when you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Do you know how hard it is to build a car of this quality? Do you remember the US VW scene ten years ago when a rear wing on a Jetta was considered show-worthy?

People, we’ve got to stop hating. If you don’t like the trends, create something new. Don’t attack the people who are out there having a go.

The same goes for air-ride. We admit we were air-skeptics at first, but the scene has great momentum and it’s being used intelligently to create awesome machines. Of course it’s not the best way to build a track car, and yes it’s cheating a bit, but it brings diversity and new energy to the scene. Let’s embrace it and see where it goes.

Sermon over. In second Top Dawg position, taking

home $300, was Joe Adams with his Mk4 GTI VR6 from et 10/10. Angel Vargus received $150 for third with his 20AE that will appear next month.

In addition to this show report, which will eventually appear at eurotuner.com , we’ll also have a gallery of more than 100 cars online. So if you were at the show, or want to see more of the Dub goodness, check out the site. You’ll also find our H2Oi video there as well as at youtube.com/eurtuner

The one element of H2Oi we didn’t capture fully was the incredible sense of community the event engenders. Groups of enthusiasts pop up all over the city, lining the main strip to watch the continuous procession of finely-tuned rides.

If you weren’t a VR6 fan, you’ll leave H2Oi wanting one after listening to the six-cylinder chorus all night. I don’t care who you are; eating dinner outdoors on a warm evening with friends, serenaded by the sound of VR6 drivebys and blow-off valves, is as good as it gets.

And as far as VW/Audi shows go, H2Oi is as good as it gets.

With visitors from across the US and Canada, and people flying in from overseas, what’s you’re excuse for not being there in 2011?

There’s no mystery. When it comes

to wheels and Euros, mesh (or

cross-spoke) designs are favored

around the world. Talk to most

wheel manufacturers and mesh

wheels account for more than half their

sales. There’s something about the classic

design with its motorsport appeal that draws

us to them, whether we’re building street,

race or show cars.

The wheel manufacturer that made

mesh popular is none other than BBS. The

company was founded 40 years ago in 1970.

Two years later, BBS manufactured its first

three-piece mesh race wheel to help race

teams looking for custom sizes. The design

became widely adopted in the motorsport

scene, finding its way into everything from

Formula One to DTM.

After its racing success, the road wheels

were born – most notably the BBS RS in

’83. The wheel became a global hit and

derivatives of the famous design have

continued to be built for OEs and the Euro

community such as the LM, RX and RC.

There’s even talk of BBS building the classic

RS again, such is the demand.

While BBS became a household name,

many other companies have put their own

twist on the mesh wheel, creating a plethora

of options for enthusiasts to choose from.

There are literally hundreds of designs, as

well as options such as construction, lip

depth, face color, bolt color, etc.

To help with your next wheel purchase,

we took some of today’s best mesh wheels

to the beach. Listed are the available sizes,

bolt patterns and finishes for each wheel

along with its construction and starting price

per wheel. To discover more about individual

wheel fitments and options, please check the

individual websites.

If looks could kill, our pick for the Castrol

Syntec Top Car Challenge would be the

last car standing. For this year’s event,

we chose the intimidating ’03 BMW M3

owned by Oscar Trevizo. Making his living

as a gourmet chef, Oscar has a passion for

European cars that prompted him to build

this race-ready coupe.

We featured the car in et 4/09 where

we saw the E46’s sexy Asuka Designs

widebody, stage 1.5 HorsepowerFreaks turbo

conversion and low-fat interior. After Oscar

submitted his car on the Top Car website, we

felt it had a fighting chance against our sister

magazines – 5.0 Mustang, Honda Tuning,

Import Tuner, Modified and Super Street .

But like last year, we won’t know the official

standings at the time of writing this article.

However, the results are located in the center

of this issue, so flip the page to see how our

Euro representative fared.

DAY ONE In a three-day competition, the first day

consisted of the emissions, horsepower and

endurance tests. Because the challenge was

intended for street-legal vehicles, each car

was put through an emissions test. Using a

five-gas emissions analyzer, our car scored

a healthy 14.00 points, giving us a slight

advantage in the standings.

Next came the dyno, where we hoped

to see big numbers from the M3. But

because Oscar had re-installed the cat for

the emissions test, the dyno result was far

from expected. “We thought we were going

to do good, because we know the car had

previously done 633whp,” he told us. “But we

didn’t realize our software wasn’t reading the

cat properly since this is the first Horsepow-

erFreaks car on the dyno with a cat.”

Oscar had three chances to make his best

run, but the M3 only made one complete

run while the other two were stopped short

because the fueling was lean. This left Oscar

with only 490whp recorded.

With low morale, Oscar had one test left

for the day, which was the drive from K&N’s

Riverside facility to Buttonwillow Racetrack.

The 180-mile drive was a pass/fail test and

Oscar happily finished with no problems.

DAY TWO The second day at Buttonwillow consisted

of quarter-mile time and trap speed, 0-60mph

acceleration and 80-0mph braking. The first

three tests were recorded simultaneously,

and each team had three passes on the

straightaway.

Oscar’s car was already handicapped by

less power, plus the Michelin tires weren’t

the Hoosier slicks he was used to. So with

Page 49: Eurotuner 2010-12

eurotuner december 49

only three runs to make the best of it, he

recorded a best quarter mile time of

12.828sec at 118.92mph.

The M3’s 0-60mph acceleration time

was an impressive 4.9sec but unfortunately

nobody was pleased with the results. “The

car should’ve easily been in the 11s. I’ve

seen stage 1 HPF cars that are in the high-

10s, and they aren’t as lightweight as us,”

Oscar commented.

On the second run, pins fastening the

Asuka Designs carbon hood weren’t secured.

The hood hit the windshield but suffered

minimal damage. Yet a quarter-mile pass

was missed…

The brake test was one of the more

successful activities, with the M3 stopping

from 80mph in 172ft.

DAY THREEThe last day was on the road course. “Two

weeks earlier we ran a 1:55sec with Hoosier

tires, no cat and 200 lb lighter with the

interior stripped. We figured we would lose

2sec, so our goal was 1:57,” he explained. But

the outcome again wasn’t as hoped; the best

run was 1:59.575sec with Oscar’s regular

driver Ivo Mitkov behind the wheel.

When all was said and done, Oscar

scored a commendable 868.82 points. This

would have been good enough for second

place last year, but the game moved on in

2010. But flip open to the Castrol Syntec

gatefold in this issue to see how we did.

“We thought we had this one in the bag,”

Oscar concluded. “But you honestly never

know what’s going to happen. We were

pretty much handicapped the whole event

because the power wasn’t there.”

Through thick and thin, Oscar would

like to thank Chris Bergemann from

HorsepowerFreaks for the helping hand.

When the car ran into as a cooling fan

problems and the coolant tank bursting, Chris

donated parts from his own M3 to help repair

the problems. Oscar also couldn’t have

Ithink it’s fair to say we’re all big fans of the E9X M3. Germany’s finest musclecar combines the perfect combination of high-tech, high-revving power with subtle yet menacing looks that are

unrivaled in the automotive sphere. With prices starting at $55k for the E90

four-door, those who can have embraced the latest M3 with open arms. One such owner is Charles Ng from Arcadia, CA.

The 18 year-old listed a couple of Toyotas and a Mercedes CLK500 as former rides, explaining that he chose the ’09 M3 because of its V8 powerplant and legendary balance.

Like all teenagers, he can’t leave anything alone, so worked with AutoTeknic in Arcadia to source a host of additions. These included the company’s carbon fiber CSL-style trunk spoiler, mirror covers and steering wheel trim. He also bought their matte-black front and side grille pieces and trunk emblem, LED signals and painted reflectors.

The parts were delivered to Renn Spec in La Puente, CA for installation, with the exception of a Vorsteiner front lip fitted by Long Tran.

The E92 Coupe was then lowered on H&R springs, before 20x9.5'' front and 20x10.5'' rear DPE LS5 wheels were mounted with Michelin PS2 rubber. With an Active Autowerk filter and Eisenmann Race exhaust ensuring the V8 could breathe, Charles contacted John Zhang about photographing his pride and joy.

The snapper suggested a trip to the Los Angeles River, the scene of countless movies and music videos, but also somewhere that’s difficult to access without prior knowledge. Having caught these wonderful images before the river dried up in mid-summer, John contacted us to see if we’d publish them.

And so here we are, looking at Charlie’s Coupe wading through water you probably wouldn’t want to drink, captured for eternity as a great tribute to the incredible BMW M3.

EVENT

Every year we look forward to the big SoCal

Euro GTG. It’s undoubtedly one of the largest

events in California, attracting the entire

spectrum of European cars from VW and

Audi, to BMW, Volvo and even exotics.

There’s no formal show or awards to worry about; you

simply show up, park and enjoy the day with your fellow

Euro brethren.

Through the years, organizer Lon Mok has taken

the event to new levels, moving the GTG from Santa

Barbara to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego two years

ago. In ’09, an autocross added more excitement. But

this year, the event went Hollywood, with the new

W Hotel as the backdrop.

More than 600 cars showed up early on a Saturday

morning to celebrate the event’s new venue and recent

partnership with the Targa Trophy Triple Crown Series.

If you’re unfamiliar with Targa Trophy, it’s a lifestyle

rally that resembles the Gumball. The entry fee isn’t

cheap, which was certainly highlighted by the roster of

competitors ranging from Italian supercars to Porsche

and Mercedes AMG. In an effort to increase the number

of spectators, the start of the rally coincided with SoCal

Euros giving attendees a chance to admire their

favorite supercars.

While the Targa cars were impressive, the Cali Euro

community didn’t disappoint either. Every trendsetting

Euro was present with countless OEM+ and slammed

air-ride examples. Even West Side Mexico made the

journey from south of the border to display their Dubs.

Year after year, we never know what to expect at

SoCal Euro, but it continues to draw the hottest cars on

the West Coast. For extended coverage from the event,

for different shops, eventually earning his mechanic’s license. After a short stint at a VW dealership, he opened the doors to Das Auto Haus four years ago, where he makes a living specializing in European car maintenance and repair. It also became a haven for project cars like these TTs.

KEY LIME Ironically, Chris wasn’t a TT fan until he saw one with an Audi A8 grille. “The first thing I did was buy some cheap wheels and a body kit. But I quickly learned the error of my

“W e were up 48 hours straight before we started the drive to Las Vegas. Tape was

holding the windshield before we headed out,” remembered Chris Meyers, owner of the green ‘01 Audi TT. His father Biff owns the yellow one, and they shared an amazing journey to Wüste2010 ( et 9/10).

“TTs are basically a Mk4 VW but a little gayer,” explained Chris. “You have to work really hard not to make them a chick car. So every night for six to eight hours, we worked on the cars in a little 18x25ft garage for about four months before the show.”

His coupe has gone through three complete transformations, while his father’s ‘02 convertible has seen two. And since they live in Alberta, Canada, there aren’t many established Euro shows, so they look forward to the annual 2700-mile excursion to Wüste in Las Vegas.

With this kind of dedication, it wasn’t surprising that Chris had been infatuated with VW and Audi since he was 14 years old. “I started tearing apart my sister’s Mk1 Cabriolet,” he told us. “I tore it into so many pieces I couldn’t get it back together!”

Working on cars got better as time passed. Chris went on to build two GTIs and three A4s. His passion led him to turn wrenches

ways,” he explained. So the TT underwent two makeovers as his taste evolved.

Then adversity struck. Earlier this year, the car was broken into and stripped. “I almost took it to a scrapyard. It was disheartening and I was done,” the owner admitted. The thieves stole the wheels, interior and stereo, beating the body pretty good.

Luckily, the salvaged engine kept the project alive. The 1.8T had been rebuilt with Integrated Engineering H-Beam rods, an 034 Motorsport intake spacer, ported AEB head and R32 throttle body.

Giving the car its mind-blowing power

was a Garrett GT35 turbo with a 60-trim

hot side – he used to have an 80-trim but

the turbo didn’t spool until 5000rpm. Now

it spools at 4000rpm, giving him more

usable power.

Because the TT was a quattro, a custom

3'' downpipe was fabricated, mated to a

custom center section which meant cutting

out the spare wheel well.

With Snow Performance meth injection

and 870cc injectors, the car was tuned on

Unitronic software to give 600whp at 31psi,

according to the owner.

After the theft incident, Chris decided

to shave the bay, removing most bolts and

brackets, tucking the wires, relocating the

power steering reservoir under a headlight

and removing the battery as well as the fuse

and relay boxes.

Giving the bay some bling, the intercooler

piping, valve cover and intake manifold were

polished; while the sides of the valve cover

and intake manifold were painted purple

along with the alternator bracket.

This purple fetish followed to the control

arms, subframe, cross brace and oil pan, all

of which were powdercoated.

H&R coilovers and Powerflex bushings

gave the TT stellar handling. Stopping was

made easier thanks to a combination of RPI

and ECS Tuning big-brakes.

This left two projects remaining – the

exterior and interior. “My painter made me go

green. I wanted Aviator grey, but he pushed

me to a prettier color,” he laughed.

The pearl hue is from a ’09 Dodge Viper,

applied after the body and Rieger kit were

repaired. The front bumper had its gills

shaved, while the skirts and rear valance were

molded to the body. Then the rear spoiler,

markers, washer nozzles and antenna were

shaved for good measure.

Finishing the exterior were 19x8.5'' OZ

Opera 2 wheels with color-matched bolts

and lettering.

With only a few days until Wüste2010,

Chris went wild on the interior. From the

dash, seats and door trim to the headliner,

everything received grey and black alcantara

with lime stitching.

The audio system followed, with the trunk

housing four JL Audio subs in a fiberglass box.

The rear seat was deleted to accommodate

three batteries and two Steg amps, while Focal

components replaced the interior speakers,

with another pair were into the dash.

LEMON MERINGUE

While Chris went beyond the norm with his

TT, it’s not a daily-driver like his father Biff’s

drop-top.

Biff wasn’t always into the Euro scene.

He had a small collection of muscle cars and

never considered anything European until

Chris started his business. From there, the

second TT project was born. “We wanted to

make similar cars, yet different,” Chris told us.

“My dad wanted a convertible so we did the

same body kit with the big nose.” Biff also

had a larger budget, so the project was able

to come together faster.

Right off the bat, a big-turbo conversion

was put together using a Garrett GT3076

turbo, Integrated rods and 630cc injectors.

Tuned by Unitronic, the car put down 450

all-wheel drive horsepower, which was

plenty for the streets of Alberta.

Chassis tuning wasn’t as extreme, with

H&R Race springs and staggered Schmidt

VN-Lines mounted to Nitto Invo tires.

Biff did all his own bodywork, shaving

the Rieger front bumper and rear valance

before molding the sides and rear to the

body. He also removed the third brake light,

markers and antenna.

Once complete, a bright color was needed

and metallic Indy yellow pearl was selected

from the Honda swatch.

The interior had the roll bar removed,

while a hidden sub box held a JL 8'' sub. The

hardest part of the interior was the R32 seats.

“The TT floor is higher than the R32, and the

roof line is way lower,” Chris explained. “So I

had to cut the bottom of the R32 frames and

weld them into one position.”

The father and son duo safely made it to

Wüste2010, where they were honored in the

King of the Desert competition. Chris took

home first place, making the long journey

that much sweeter.

Don’t let this rag-top fool you; it has 450whp thanks to a GT3076R turbo and Unitronic software

iPHONE TUNING

WORDS ALEX ROGAN

PHOTOS JOSH BROWN

WE CHECK OUT THE NEW SPEEDPORT SOFTWARE AND iPHONE APP FROM AUTOSPEED PERFORMANCE.

SpeedData software suite, AutoSpeed can log up to 1500 simultaneous data points per second which, without getting too technical, allowed them to develop the smoothest performance tune for each application. More than just modified maps, these are completely re-written for improved performance.

To sample this new product, we needed a suitable car. So you may recognize our Mk5 GTI project. It’s been a while since the car was in the magazine but it’s been running strong over the past few years. The eagle-eyed among you may notice the addition of Hartmann G5 wheels, but like all projects this one has never really been ‘finished.’

SPEEDPORT APP With the car owned by et photographer and certified Apple junky, Josh Brown, the promise of an iPhone app to access the car’s computer was a powerful draw.

The SpeedPort upgrades are performed

Remember when you used to speak to people on the phone? Now with texting, emails and messengers, we don’t have to talk to anybody. And the

battery’s probably dead from playing games, using the nav software and taking photos anyway.

So while the iPhone revolutionized personal communication, it will also transform how we interact with our modified VWs, Audis and Porsches if AutoSpeed has anything to say about it.

Mark Slazak, owner and president of AutoSpeed in Voorhees, NJ, with his team of programmers and engineers, are the people behind the entire concept. They designed, wrote and wholly created the SpeedPort iPhone app in-house. The aim is to compliment its line of SpeedPort performance software available for most late-model VAG turbo engines, as well as the Golf R32 and Audi S4 V8.

Utilizing their own proprietary

via the OBD port, so there’s no need to open the ECU or physically tamper with the circuitry. The Mk5 GTI is one of many popular VW/Audi applications available, with a number of different programs included in each upgrade.

Pricing depends on the exact model, but the software for our Mk5 2.0T was priced at $599. This included a stock mode, 91-, 93-, and 104-octane performance tunes, a reduced performance valet mode as well as an anti-theft security setting.

Where the Speedport differs from other performance software is that all these options are selected through the SpeedPort iPhone app. The exact number of programs and options can vary, so check with AutoSpeed for your specific application.

Customers without an iPhone caneasily change the programs with the SpeedSwitch option for laptop computers provided you have a suitable data cable.

Page 63: Eurotuner 2010-12

eurotuner december 63

However, you won’t be able to access the DataDash or fault code scanner.

The SpeedPort app is more than just a new switch for programs. If you visit the SpeedPort website and check out the video, you’ll see that it also includes DataDash. This gizmo allows you to monitor (and record) engine parameters in real time. For example, boost pressure, fuel trim, engine speed, vehicle speed, air intake temp, throttle position, engine load and more can all be accessed; though not all at once – limitations on the amount of data available from the OBD port mean you can monitor up to five sources. You can also check and clear engine fault codes, although it’s not intended to replace a full diagnostic scan.

Using the app is simple. It’s easy to jump in and discover the applications. The primary menu with three options: Profiles (for the performance mode), Scan Code and DataDash (for monitoring engine parameters). You just select the option you desire, and are ready to roll.

The app itself costs $29.99 from the website or Apple’s App Store. While the PLX cable (which connects the OBD port wirelessly to your iPhone) is $149.99 from AutoSpeed, their dealers or PLX Devices.

Even if you don’t have AutoSpeed software on your VW/Audi, you can still use the iPhone app. You won’t be able to change programs, but the DataDash and Scan Code functions work on most 1996-on OBD2 vehicles.

DYNO

Of course, all of this would be worthless if the software didn’t perform, but there is nothing to worry about; it’s been impressive thus far…

The AutoSpeed software is designed to work within the limitations of the factory engine, but provide a transformed driving experience. When you step on the gas, you know it isn’t stock programming.

Since Project GTI previously had APR software, we had it flashed back to 100% OEM code. In the stock mode it laid down a reasonable 189hp and 204 lb-ft on AutoSpeed’s Mustang dyno. This was with all the previous parts in place, including an APR 3'' turbo-back exhaust, Forge Twintercooler FMIC and diverter valve plus a VF intake.

With no other changes, apart from the ASP stage 2 software, the power and torque increased across the board. The dyno showed 223hp and 254 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. And while an extra 50 lb-ft is very impressive, it’s important not to get caught up in the ‘peak’ numbers game, as gains under the curve are substantially higher than that, especially from 3500-5500rpm (see chart).

During the dyno test we discovered a small boost leak, which resulted in a 2psi loss of boost pressure across the rev range. Fortunately, AutoSpeed has an on-site machine shop for custom fabrication, so were able to manufacture a boost tap to connect our GTI to the

dyno’s sensitive boost gauge for the most accurate monitoring.

Once hooked up we were seeing 18psi at peak, rather than the requested 20psi. This remained constant even as boost dropped up to redline. Mark estimated the lost boost could be worth an additional 10whp, so we hope to check next time we visit Autospeed’s NJ HQ for a re-run once the problem is resolved.

Even with our boost leak, Project GTI has no problem ripping through the gears with a sense of urgency. The part-throttle response is excellent, with great off-idle transitions, and the power band never feels ‘soft’ even when you’re taking it easy. Boost builds quickly and the engine is ready to go whenever you are. At full throttle, the revs climb instantly and never fail to leave a smile on our face.

In general, the feel and quality of the new software feels very similar to the previous APR stage 2+, but if anything it responds a fraction quicker. Both are very good upgrades without annoying hiccups, stuttering or flatspots.

While there are many software options available for your VW, Audi or Porsche, SpeedPort offers an excellent performance upgrade and a unique bundle of options accessed through their iPhone app, making it worthy of closer inspection. It’s undoubtedly a very cool gadget for anybody looking for a control interface that also offers real-time feedback at a reasonable price.

The SpeedPort app (center) offers a menu page for Profiles, Scan Codes and DataDash. The profiles (in yellow) allow you to choose loaded software, valet mode, etc. The DataDash (far right) allows you to monitor up to five parameters, such as speed, intake temp, fuel pressure, engine load and boost, as seen here. Scan Codes (far left) allows you to scan for engine fault codes and clear them

EVENT

T he Leavenworth Drive continues

to make history in the Euro scene.

Last year, we thought 680 would

be impossible to beat, but the ’10

event attracted 750+ Euros from

around the Pacific Northwest.

The annual gathering was founded in ’01

by renowned tuner Evolution Sports. And

ever since the shop closed its doors in ’06,

Northwest European has taken over the reins

to continue the tradition. Now it’s one of the

largest GTGs on the West Coast.

The Leavenworth Drive is also one of the

scene’s biggest charitable events. Last year,

every driver made a contribution to raise more

than $6000 for the local children’s hospital.

This year, they raised over $8000!

If you’ve never attended the drive, you

might want to plan for next year. The day

starts with an informal meeting at a college

parking lot in Bellevue, WA. From there,

the drivers head out on a 110-mile journey

to Leavenworth, WA with a short pitstop

at Steven’s Pass. Located in the heart of the

Cascade Mountains, drivers regroup at the

peak then finish the last leg of the caravan

to Leavenworth.

Incidentally, Leavenworth isn’t your

typical American town. It’s actually modeled

on an old German village, so all the shops,

restaurants, hotels and even fast food joints

share Bavarian décor and fashion. As for the

brats and beer… it’s delicious, making it a

perfect destination for Euro enthusiasts.

This year the weather wasn’t as good as

previously but rest assured, the Leavenworth

Drive will return with the same great

atmosphere and group of Northwest Euro

fans. For information and dates for ’11, visit

Back in et 10/10, when we

started work on our 2011

BMW M3 Competition

Package, we began by installing

several cosmetic pieces

from BMW Performance and Turner

Motorsport. These included carbon dash

trim, mirror shells, hood and fender

vents, kidney grilles and some TMS wheel

spacers. We had intended to complete

the installation with the pieces fitted

here in et 11/10, but a six-piston Brembo

installation got in the way!

Well now we’re back on schedule,

and this month we’ll be installing more

new parts recently released by BMW

Performance. Obviously we’re using the

BMW parts because the fit and finish is

the same exquisite OE quality, and they’re

covered by the BMW warranty.

As before, you can see the parts and

read the installation instructions here,

while there’s also a basic installation

video online at eurotuner.com and

youtube.com/eurotuner

Most of the parts fitted here are

straightforward and require no special

tools. They should apply to E90, E92

and E91 M3 models, as well as regular

3-Series. However, we discovered there

were some surprising differences

between the models, so check online

before ordering.

Always take care when fitting new

parts. Protect your paint, ensure bolts

are torqued to the correct spec. If you’re

unsure about any step, consult an expert

or have it fitted by a specialist or your

BMW dealer.

All BMW Performance (BMWP) parts

are available from your local dealer or via

the web address on the next page.

If you’re looking to save the pennies,

you can special order the M3 without

a rear spoiler, meaning the carbon

replacement is the only one you’ll need.

You can also order all the BMWP parts

on a new car. They’re fitted at the port

of entry before the car reaches the

dealership, so you know the installation

will be top notch. But since we’re

cheapskates, we chose to install everything

ourselves.

Also note, since the M3 is a loaner

from BMW and has to be returned

to stock, we’re not gluing the spoilers

permanently in place as recommended.

We’ve come up with secure but reversible

techniques that you can use, or simply

bond them to the car as advised.

Page 71: Eurotuner 2010-12

2

For the front doors, start by the hinges using a suitable tool to insert behind the stock plastic trim and pry it away from the door card

The trim is secured by prongs in plastic clips, with a securing tab at the rear of the door, so work back from the hinge. Some clips may come away with the trim, so insert them back into the door

3

4

To fit the BMW piece, locate the tab in the end of the door, then push the carbon trim into place. It’s thicker than stock, so needs a firm push but fits perfectly

The underside of the stock M3 bumper has two 8mm fixing screws on each side, while the carbon splitter has three holes

CARBON DOOR TRIMS

Because our car was ordered with the Competition Package

(see et 9/10), the specification was reduced in other areas to

lower the overall cost. Therefore, it has basic cloth seats and

black plastic interior trim.

Fortunately, BMW Performance has interior parts for the

car, especially if you drive the E92 Coupe version. Sadly,

there’s less choice for our four-door E90, but we previously

fitted the two-piece carbon fiber dashboard trim kit, which

made a significant difference. This time, we’re fitting the BMWP carbon door trims.

As before, the carbon fiber quality is exceptional, with the weave visually flawless.

And since fitting is identical to the OE parts, we again enlisted the help of experienced

BMW Technician, Derek Vieira, who installed the parts on our previous BMW 135i

project ( et 3/10). He works at a local BMW dealership, wrenching on the cars daily,

so has an expert knowledge of them.

The door trims only take a few minutes to install: you simply pry off the stock

parts, making sure to start at the correct end, as shown here. Then firmly press the

new BMWP carbon fiber replacements into place, and you’re finished.

The rear doors are exactly the same, except the locating tab is by the hinge, so start prying off from the opposite end, as shown. Then push the carbon BMWP trim into place

CARBON SPLITTERS

To emphasize the M3’s distinctive front

spoiler, BMW Performance has produced

a two-piece carbon fiber splitter set that

fits over the stock bumper. The quality of

carbon weave added more overt sportiness

to the front-end, and nicely matches the

Turner Motorsport carbon kidney grille

we previously fitted.

For some reason, BMW recommend

different fitting procedures for the E90

and E92, even though both bumpers are

apparently identical. With the Coupe, the

splitters are bonded to the bumper with

the supplied adhesive. However, the sedan

uses a combination of adhesive and a

single bolt.

Since our car has to return to stock,

we ignored the glue and used double-sided

automotive tape in combination with an

additional fixing bolt, as described below.

The solution appears to be solid and

remains in place today. The task took

about an hour to complete.

We removed the outer screw and tapped a new hole into the bumper for the middle hole in the splitter. We would use a speed clip on the other side to secure the new screw

Stick the tape to the bumper and tighten the two screws. Repeat on the other side to finish

Apply double-sided automotive tape around the edge of the carbon splitter

CARBON SPOILER

We fitted a similar BMW Performance

rear spoiler to our Project 135i and it

looked very good, so we were confident

the M3 would benefit just the same. And

since we’d again have to remove it at

the end of the project, we weren’t going

to glue it, as recommended. Instead,

we copied the technique used by the

bodyshop to attach the 135i spoiler.

This involved removing the stock

spoiler with a spatula, the thinner the

better. Then we removed the excess glue

with a rubber wheel. When the bodyshop

did this it took seconds and was a perfect

job. We were less practiced but it still

worked well.

Finally, we used more double-sided

automotive tape to fix it to the trunk,

marking the original position to ensure it

was correctly aligned. Once again, it took

little time to complete the job.

NEXT MONTH

In part four of our M3 makeover, we’ll

lower the ride height with a set of H&R

Sport springs from Turner Motorsport

(as promised for the last two months)

and we’ll also have our new Forgestar

wheels and Continental tire package.

1

3 2

Protect your paintwork around the stock spoiler and use a thin metal spatula (we used a less effective thicker plastic one) and slide it under the spoiler, slicing through the adhesive

After cleaning the surface, apply double-sided automotive tape to the underside of the spoiler

We bought this 3M eraser wheel online for $10. It’s used for removing vinyl graphics and quickly removed the adhesive residue for us

4

Having marked where the stock spoiler sat, we aligned the BMWP wing and pressed down to stick. It’s a good idea not to drive for a day while the tape bonds

PROJECT SILVERSTONE

ENGINE OVERHAUL

❯ ❯ SEE THE VIDEOS AT EUROTUNER.COM AND YOUTUBE.COM/EUROTUNER

WORDS & PHOTOS SAM DU

WE PREPARE OUR VW GTI 1.8T FOR MORE POWER AND BOOST.

PART 1

The VW/Audi Group’s most

popular engine is arguably the

1.8T. In the VW Golf, GTI,

Jetta, New Beetle, Passat, Audi

A4 and TT, the turbocharged

1.8-liter 20-valve was adopted around the

world from ’96-05.

The inline-four didn’t get the best start,

with early models limited to a humble

150hp at the flywheel, but output was

increased to 180hp with a modified K03

turbo, then 225hp with a K04 in the

Audi TT.

Everyone who’s owned a K03-equipped

1.8T knows it reaches a ceiling. No matter

what combination of bolt-on parts you

install, there’s no simple way to make

significant horsepower gains.

Take Project Silverstone, for example.

Our ’03 GTI’s best run on a Dynojet was

195whp and 233 lb-ft of torque. This

was after we installed a high-flow Kinetic

exhaust manifold in collaboration with

GIAC software, Techtonics turbo-back Integrated connecting rods with 83mm Mahle pistons are key to strength and torque from our 1.8T

TECH

exhaust, Evolution Racewerks front-

mount intercooler, Forge diverter valve,

Unorthodox pulleys and BMC intake.

With all these upgrades, the next big

step was a big-turbo conversion. There are

countless examples out there, including

our own Combat Correspondent Brady

Cloward’s Project Jetta which made

353whp after its turbo upgrade ( et 2/07).

With so many turnkey turbo kits available,

from inexpensive K04 upgrades to larger

GT-series conversions, we decided to first

ensure we have a good foundation for

Project Silverstone…

Most tuners will tell you 300-350whp

is the most you can safely squeeze from

the stock engine block. What they don’t

tell you is that this power isn’t typically

available until 5000rpm.

So instead of worrying about the turbo

for now, we first sought advice from

Integrated Engineering (IE) to make our

four-cylinder stronger in preparation for

more power.

The weakest components in the

1.8T are the connecting rods – the link

between the pistons and crankshaft. Stock

VW rods are made of powdered steel

alloy. The design is tapered at the top and

narrow across the bushing. This is sturdy

enough for a mildly tuned motor, but

when you want big power, the rods aren’t

able to handle the stress.

You can do a drop-in rod solution,

which improves the situation but can

mask the weakness of the stock pistons.

For high-power daily-driven applications,

excessive strain on the piston wristpin

bushing can increase wear rates. Another

drawback is simply the small engine of the

1.8-liter; the small displacement means a

bigger turbo won’t effectively make torque

until at least 4000rpm.

The ideal solution is Integrated

Engineering’s 2.0L stroker kit. It increases

the displacement of the engine by

increasing the travel of the piston. In our

case, the 1.8-liter is bumped up to two

liters using larger pistons, H-Beam rods

and a new 2.0T crankshaft.

We specified our kit with 83mm forged

Mahle pistons over JE or Wiseco parts on

Integrated’s recommendation for daily use.

They replace the factory 81mm pistons,

giving us a capacity of 2008cc from the

stock 1781cc.

The larger piston diameter reduces

cylinder pressures and thus stress on the

engine. The pistons are supplied with

the appropriate oil-pump drive-gear and

are clearanced for the oil squirters. The

compression ratio is lowered from 9.25:1

to 9:1 ratio. The slight drop is ideal for

street applications and doesn’t sacrifice

too much gas mileage or drivability. These

are all key factors to increase the life of

the motor that a simple drop-in rod set

can’t do.

The larger pistons also generate more

power from a given amount of fuel.

According to Integrated’s figures, it’s

around 8-11% in this case. So the benefits

are adding up.

As for the rods, IE manufacturers

some of the strongest on the market.

They’re constructed from vacuum-drawn

4340 forged chrome moly steel alloy and

secured with larger alloy steel bolts from

ARP (9.525mm versus 8mm stock).

The standard-length 144mm IE rods

feature a robust H-beam design with

wider beams for the ultimate strength

and 20mm carbon-steel wristpins. They

have a machined finish with multi-stage

heat treatment and are shot-peened for

strength. Overall, the rods are claimed to

be twice as strong as the stock parts, able

to withstand more than 550 lb-ft.

The final stroker kit component is the

new crankshaft. It’s based on the VW

factory 2.0T FSI crank that IE modifies

to drop into the 1.8T block. In order to

do this, they’ve changed the oil-pump

drive-gear on the front of the crankshaft

to work with the 1.8T’s oil pump and

chain. The crank journals are the same

diameter but the stroke is increased from

the 1.8T’s 86.4mm to 92.88mm for

the FSI.

The FSI crank is a forged steel part

compared to the 1.8T’s cast iron. In

addition, the 2.0-liter crank was designed

more meticulously by VW, allowing it

to be stronger without increasing the

weight, so the rotational mass isn’t

significantly higher.

With the 2.0 stroker kit in our

possession and Raven Motorsport in

Long Beach, CA in possession of Project

Silverstone, they pulled the motor from

the engine bay. Obviously, this isn’t the

easiest task for the Average Joe but the

experienced mechanics at Raven freed the

1.8T in less than three hours, where it

would take most people half-a-day

or more.

Stay tuned next month as we show the

engine disassembly and rebuild using IE’s

stroker components.

Removing the engine is a complex process, which starts with removing parts of the front bumper, headlights, etc

Opting to pull the motor from the front of the car, we disconnected the core support. The motor can also drop from under the car if preferred

One of the most difficult tasks is disconnecting the engine harness

BUDGET SUSPENSION UPGRADE, PART 2CONTINUING TO IMPROVE OUR Mk4 GTI, WE ADD A NEUSPEED REAR SWAY BAR.

running wide (pushing the front) in a

turn, simply lifting off the throttle pedal

will cause the rear to come around

(oversteer). When the rear starts to come

around, the driver can pickup the gas,

rotating the car and tightening the line

through the corner.

We have to warn you that this point,

lift and shoot cornering method can

be tricky for novice drivers and, while

popular, it isn’t recommended for the

street. You definitely need space to

practice. But on the track or autocross,

you can gain serious speed and control.

In our case, setting the Neuspeed bar in

the softest position (the furthest hole from

the bar ends) gave the owner the most

forgiving setup to learn the technique.

But remember, if you don’t know what

you’re doing, and something causes you

to swerve in a turn, you could end up

spinning into a nasty accident.

This mod is a more advanced driving

upgrade and we’d probably recommend

that you fit front and rear sway bars in

unison for a more balanced, safer setup.

You have been warned!

The bar installation took little more

than one hour, with nothing more than

simple hand tools and jackstands. The

hardest part was slipping the securing

Welcome back to the

second and final

installment of the

budget suspension

upgrades on our

’03 GTI 1.8T. Last month, we ditched

the blown-out stock suspension in favor

of Neuspeed’s new Koni Cup kit to prove

you could improve handling and looks

without resorting to expensive coilovers.

This month, we’re back to reduce body

roll with a 28mm Neuspeed adjustable

rear sway bar. This quality piece is made

from aerospace-quality 6150 steel and

comes with everything needed to corner

flatter, including polyurethane bushings.

The bar is also three-way adjustable,

ranging from 428 inch-lb/degree in the

softest setting, to 560 inch-lb/degree in the

stiffest, allowing you to tailor the handling

to your requirements.

VW did a good job with the Mk4’s

trailing-beam rear suspension, but it’s

designed to understeer (push the front

tires) at the limit. And while this is the

safest characteristic, it’s not the fastest.

Instead, we’ll gain a little oversteer

(tail out), with a good rear bar to give

us more flickability at speed.

In essence, if a front-wheel drive car

is equipped with a rear sway bar and is

clamps over the trailing beam, but

otherwise it’s a breeze.

TESTINGAfter the install we returned to our

“top-secret proving grounds” abandoned

road to taste the fruits of our labor on

the same half-worn Zexius ZE-326 tires.

Previously our best trip through the

700ft slalom with the Neuspeed Koni

Cup Kit was 69.4mph (up from the

stock 65.2mph).

With the bar fitted, the GTI galloped

through the cones at 70.5mph. It gave us

an increase of 1.1mph, while lateral grip

went from 0.88g to 0.90g (0.82g stock).

These numbers represent an increase

of 5.3mph in the slalom and 0.08g over

the stock car.

But more than just better numbers,

the car now corners flat, and the turn-in

is nicely predictable. The car now rotates

like a proper sportscar, with the aid of

some right-foot steering, once you get the

hang of it.

In the end, we took our GTI from

simple stocker to a back-road rocker for

just a few bucks. While coilovers and

big-ticket suspension items would have

been nice, we’ve proved big performance

can come at a small price.

FIXXFEST NOVEMBER 20

Florida enthusiasts are

preparing for one of the

biggest VW/Audi events of the

year. The seventh Fixxfest hits

Bradenton Motorsports Park

and, if it’s anything like the ’09 event, greatness is in store.

Last year they attracted more than 1200 cars.

Fixxfest takes place on the weekend before Thanksgiving when the

weather is comfortable in Florida. Between the $10 all-day quarter-mile races, a full car show, pumpkin-pie

eating contest and big wheel races (adults on kids’ big wheels), there’s something for everybody.

2011Organizing a meet, show or

race in 2011? To get on our

calendar, e-mail the details

to [email protected]

Your event will appear both

in the mag and online at
