The Europeana Network

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

One of the most powerful instruments we have developed together is the network of over 800 members, representing over 2300 institutions who contribute data, knowledge and technology. Together, we have accomplished a number of amazing things:

The diversity of the Content

PD Hispana: A New Chart of Holland with the Entrances to the Scheld, &c [Mapa] 1802

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

We have developed an aggregation infrastructure that allowed over 2300 partners from every member state to contribute over 30 million objects on every topic imaginable in 36 languages from every member state, and beyond.

The Europeana Data Model

Inventor WWW

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

We have been able to develop a shared data model that is future proof (LOD etc.). <Add stuff on the model, pisa meeting, currently 9 million EDM records (?) everything available through SPARQL end node, ...> ‘The coordination and standardisation of a shared data model that is fit for the web of the future’

Data interoperability

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

And all this was supported by huge amounts of work on the data model and standardisation of data

We have been able to agree on a very far-reaching licensing infrastructure that makes the metadata available for everyone to use and re-use. Also mention public domain mark. <Picture Paul, ...?>

Leadership

These are things we have done so well that they have become export products of Europe (DPLA, Korea, Brasil, ...). Mention BBC MoU.

The portal www.europeana.eu is the most visible expression of this united Europe.

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

The most visible aspect of all is of course the portal. If you like, this was the visual inspiration. but it had and has many flaws, not least how can one portal satisfy all the needs of all the different types of users for the material gathered. Will it work for the researcher in the digital humanities, does it provide the educational pathway for the schoolchild, can I find stuff about my town, or the town I am visiting. Even if the portal can do all of this, are we able to service it to comprehend the changing needs of the users, to make it work for each and every person? We thought that was not the Why of Europeana, so we have embarked on the second phase:

Raw Data

Where’s the museum that

has the drawing of

Rembrandt ‘s son?

Need some curriculum ready

stuff for my lesson on 1989

Would like to show in my app all the music

scores that are available for free

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

But  we  dont  think  we  can    do  this  via  a  single  portal  that  works  for  everyone.    We  are  not  a  search  engine,  we  are  trying  to  show  the  breadth  and  depth  of  what  our  cultural  ins;tu;ons  have  but  to  do  this  according  to  the  level  of  knowledge,  depth,  breadth  that  the  user  is  looking  for  requires  us  to  be  experts  in  primary,  secondary  educa;ons,  in  media  driven  art,  in  genealogy,  in  cultural  tourism,  in  specific  hobbies,  in  different  areas  of  research.    The  user  also  has  a  prolifera;on  of  ways  to  get  to  things  -‐  we  think  we  should  be  placing  the  right  data  in  the  right  place.

So how does that boil down for our strategy 2015-2020?

Connecting Europe Facility

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

http://ec.europa.eu/We will become part of infrastructure. This is good, because culture is now seen to underpin the knowledge economy. However, there are a few things we need to do and overcome, not least satisfying user need

Intersection of culture and technology to bring Europe’s vast wealth of cultural heritage to the world

Culture transforms lives

Tuesday, 18 March 2014We believe culture transforms lives <JC/JP>

We’re  here  to  move  things  forward.  We  are  a  one  of  kind  organisa;on.  SiEng  at  the  intersec;on  of  culture  and  technology  we  are  passionate  about  bringing  Europe’s  vast  wealth  of  cultural  heritage  to  the  world.  To  make  it  shareable  –  available  at  the  touch  of  buHon,  unlocked  from  our  museums  and  galleries.  To  make  it  usable  –  to  build  with  and  build  on.  For  change.  For  ideas.  For  progress.  And  to  make  it  reliable.  Easy  to  use  and  always  100%  trustworthy.

We  call  it  Cultural  Innova;on.  We’re  restless  for  it.  Determined  to  drive  it.  Proud  to  use  European  culture  to  improve  the  status  quo  of  society.  And  to  transform  lives  across  the  planet  with  this  extraordinary  giR

3 impacts:1.Makes culture available for everyone, 2.Supports economic growth,3.Connects Europe

3 priorities:

1.Shareable - available at the touch of a button, unlocked

2.Usable - to build with and on, for ideas, change, progress

3.Reliable - Easy to use, 100% trustworthy

Therefore,  we  pull  in  the  digitally  available  material  of  our  cultural  heritage  ins;tu;ons  and  enable  it  to  work  together  so  that  it  can  be  pushed  or  pulled  out  by  communi;es  wan;ng  to  view,  reuse,  research  and  discover  our  cultural  heritage.

Users  can  find  this  material  in  places  they  already  use,  Google,  Wikipedia,  Facebook,  thema;c  sites,  educa;onal  Apps,  tourism  apps,  the  list  can  be  endless  and  it  is  scaleable.

Why  do  we  do  this?    What  impacts  have  we  had?  29  million  objects,  from  2300  providers,  via  373  aggregators,  we  have  a  data  model  that  is  based  on  Linked  Open  Data,  now  beginning  to  work  in  prac;se  as  well  theory    and  we  have  770  applica;ons  for  our  API  with  some  great  examples  of  ‘reuse’  star;ng.    Because  we  have  a  great  network,  interoperable  data,  a  licensing  framework,  some  great  examples  of  user  engagement
