- Searched for a route to the East Indies
- Sailed Northwest looking for the Northwest passage around Canada
- Claimed land in North America for England
- Never returned from his second voyage in 1498 (same year Vasco da Gama sailed to India)
Giovanni da Verrazano
- Sailed for France
- Searched for a Northwest passage to the Indies
- Sailed along the coast of North America and Canada
- Made land claims for the French… but was killed by native tribes
Henry Hudson
- Sailed for both the Dutch and eventually English
- Made land claims for both countries - in New York state
- Looked for the Northwest passage -- trying to get to the East Indies
- Crew had a mutiny -- rebellion on his ship --and left him in the icy waters with his son and a few crew members

- Unlike the Spanish in the south, northern explorers found no gold or other treasures
- As a result countries who explored Northern America had to find other ways to generate wealth!

● Europeans traded for whale oil, beaver and fox FURS

● Colonies provided new land, resources, and trade

● England allowed sailors such as Sir Francis Drake to raid Spanish ships which carried gold or silver back to Europe
● These sailors were nicknamed “sea dogs”

● England raids on Spanish ships led to war between England and Spain
● England was able to defeat the Spanish Armada (a huge fleet of ships) in 1588.
