    EURODESK SUMMARY - 2014-02

United Nations World Youth Report 2013 - Youth & Migration

Published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the report offers a broad

understanding of the situation of young migrants from the perspective of young migrants themselves.

It highlights some of the concerns, challenges and successes experienced by young migrants based

on their own lives and told in their own voices. The report focuses largely on the phenomena of

international migration which increasingly has a significant impact on the origin, transit and destination

countries and communities. The consequences are complex, context-specific and subject to change

    over time.

The report has been drafted in an interactive manner, allowing readers to navigate chapters

    individually.

First-ever official hearing for a European citizens' initiative at the European Parliament

Access to good quality water was the topic of the first-ever official hearing held for a European

citizens' initiative at the European Parliament on 17 February.

Organisers of the Right2Water campaign urged the EU Commission to guarantee access to water

and sanitation as a human right, and give a legal undertaking that water services will not be liberalised

    in the EU.

MEPs shared the view that access to water is a basic human right, but some pointed out that rules on

providing drinkable water remain the remit of EU member states.

The hearing was attended by the Right2Water organisers, MEPs as well as Commission Vice-

President Maro!"ef#ovi#, who will draft the official response to the initiative by 20 March.Find out more: http://tinyurl.com/nnbltt4

Working with young people: The value of youth work in the EU

This new EU-wide study published today, provides information about the value of youth work, and how

it results in a range of positive outcomes for young people, enabling them to:

    - develop skills and competences,

    - strengthen their network and social capital, and

    - change particular behaviours.

According to the study, beyond the individual level outcomes, youth work is an important component of

our social fabric, offering a space for contact, exchange, and engagement between young people, as

    well as between generations.

The study analyses the specific situation of the 28 EU Member States, highlighting the situation of

youth work and its contribution to the well-being and development of young people.

Various actors and organisations are delivering youth work in Europe, such as youth clubs, youth

centres and youth associations. In addition to street workers' activities, youth workers are providing

support within schools, libraries or hospitals. Despite this diversity, youth work has common core

features; it focuses on young people, their personal development, and voluntary participation.

European Vacancy Monitor (EVM) reveals North-South divide in EU labour market

The latest issue of the European Vacancy Monitor (EVM) reveals a shortage of labour supply incountries such as Austria, Denmark Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, while competition for jobs is

increasing in countries such as Greece, Slovakia and Spain. The report also highlights the strengths

and weaknesses in the recruitment markets of four Southern countries, and warns that more

measures are needed to help young people find skilled jobs and, therefore, boost labour productivity.

The Monitor confirms stagnation in labour demand in the EU in the second quarter of 2013, except for

a small increase in the number of job vacancies in the public sector. Overall, recruitment fell by 4%, a

larger decline than in the previous quarter. Hiring increased in less than half the countries over the

    period.

Addressing youth absenteeism in European elections

A new report, jointly published today by the League of Young Voters and International IDEA, reveals

the reasons behind the very high rates of young people not voting in European elections and lays bare

the mutual distrust between political parties and young people. According to the report, absenteeism is

related to socio-economic factors, a strong disconnect between political parties and young voters, and

political parties not taking into account new ways to communicate with younger audiences.

Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) Infographics about youth unemployment

    in Europe

The infografics from the Institute of International and European Affairs visually describes the youth

    unemployment crisis in Europe.

For instance, "Mind the gap" describes that in 2007, before the economic crisis began, youth

unemployment across the EU was at a comparatively low level with the rate at 12% or under in 11

    Member States.

As the infographic shows, youth unemployment rates are now soaring across Europe and Greece,

Spain and Croatia are experiencing particularly high levels. Of potentially greater concern is the high

NEET (not in education, employment or training) rate level. These combined trends present the

possibility of a lost generation in Europe with many young citizens struggling to develop necessary

    skills and experience.
