15

2.1 Rigid Pavement SystemA minimum 20 MPa reinforced concrete base is required for all rigidpavement construction as per engineers detail and be level to withina tolerance of 3mm in 3m.

Do not attempt to use these beddingsover granular base.

2.1.1 Euro pavers bedded on mortar• Thoroughly clean and prepare the

concrete base surface by removingany foreign material.

• Dampen concrete base and prepareand apply a slurry bonding mix. The slurry coat must remain moistto assist mortar bond. Broom theslurry onto the concrete surfaceensuring only sufficient slurry isplaced so that it does not dry outprior to it being covered by themortar bedding.

• Expansion joints locations need to be identified prior to laying.Expansion joints need to be providedat intervals of no more than 4m and must mirror all concrete basecontrol joints.

• Mortar comprising freshly mixed 1:3 cement-sand or 1:3 lime-sand in proportions by weight (note: proprietary plasticisers andretarders are available to modify the mortar performance) should beplaced and screeded at nominal 15 to 30 mm thick. If thicknessgreater than 30mm is needed then a levelling screed comprising ofcement and aggregate in the proportions of 1:4 should be used. The aggregate blend should be80/20 blend of 5mm stone andsand. The levelling screed should becured for 24 hours before Europavers are laid. Alternatively MapeiPlanicrete SP admixture can be usedrefer Mapei Data Sheet No. 700.

• Considerations for weather conditionsneed to be taken into account whenscreeding mortar bed, to ensure that mix does not dry out. As soonas possible after screeding mortar, sprinkle dry cement evenly over area where laying is active. Depending on moisture content ofmortar bed, dampening of drycement may be required using awater mist spray.

• Tamper down paver to ensure embedment and full adhesionbetween Euro pavers, mortar bed and concrete base.

• Where pavers are to have groutedjoints, joints should be at least5mm and preferably 10mm in widthand filled using a non shrink cementitious grout. Joints of less than 5mm in width may be filledwith jointing sand.

• The mortar bed must have stiffenedsufficiently prior to filling with anon shrink cementitious grout.Ensure grout completely fills joints.Immediately after grouting pavement wipe pavers clean withclean water and a sponge.

• After pavement completed restrictall access for 24 hours.

2.1.2 Euro pavers bedded onMapei adhesiveContact Mapei for your nearest distributor and technical support tollfree 1800 652 666.

• Thoroughly clean and prepare theconcrete base surface by removingany residual laitance, curing compounds, oils, greases and dirtby either diamond grinding, shotblasting, scabbling, scrubbingand/or washing with high pressurewater. This work should be carriedout in accordance with AS3958-11991’Ceramic Tiles Part 1: Guide tothe Installation of Ceramic Tiles’ andAS3958-2 1992 ‘Ceramic Tiles Part2: Guide to the Selection of aCeramic Tiling System.

• Remove Euro pavers from their pallet and place them upside downand adjacent to the proposed work area. The back face of the Europavers should then be wiped cleanto remove any dust using a flatsponge and clean water and allowedto dry.

• Mix the Mapei ‘Drop and Go’ proprietary adhesive in accordancewith the Mapei Data Sheet No. 107.

• Apply the adhesive to the concretesurface with a curved notched trowel (8 to15 mm notches) using a scraping motion to work the material into good contact with the surface to be covered. Theselection of the correct troweldepends on the evenness of thesubstrate.

Refer to Mapei data sheet No.107 forfurther information on trowel sizes.Do not spread more material than canbe covered with tiles within 15 minutes.

• Lay and lightly twist the Europavers onto the adhesive ensuring100% full bedding, ensuring a truesurface without lipping and providingthe correct joint spacing betweenthe Euro pavers. Should the adhesiveform a skin, remove and re-spreadthe adhesive. Periodically inspect a paver by lifting to ensure correctcoverage.

• Ensure any residue adhesive on thesurface of the Euro paver andbetween joints is removed with a wet sponge without delay, otherwiseit will harden and can only beremoved by mechanical means.

• After completion of the pavement, restrict all access for pedestriantraffic for 4 hours and light vehicletraffic for 24 hours on dry substratedepending on the time of year andweather conditions (eg in winter thecompleted pavement may have to beleft for 5 to 7 days-refer to Mapei data sheet No.107 for further information).

• Mix the proprietary grout in accordancewith the manufacturers instructionsto a fluid consistency.

• Pre wet the area to be grouted withclean water and apply grout with a squeegee to the grout line andallow to firm up. Without delay, wipe excess grout off the surface of the Euro pavers with clean waterand a sponge by moving in diagonalstrokes over the joints. Avoid excessclean up water getting into thejoints, as it will weaken the joint.Joints should be full and free of any voids and pits.

• Provide expansion joints at all locations were the Euro pavers abutrestraining surfaces and directlyover any control joints in the concrete base.

• Interior installations shall haveexpansion joints at a maximum of 6m x 6m and exterior applicationsat 4m x 4m or at centres specifiedby the engineer. Expansion jointsshall be raked or cut through the adhesive bed to the concrete basesurface. All expansion joints shallbe filled with an appropriate flexible material.

2.1.3 Euro paversbedded on sand• Ensure edge restraints are in place

to contain the bedding sand eg mortar edging, mortared down edgepavers, adjacent structures, kerbs, channels. Note: edge restraints mustalso be capable of accepting trafficloads.

• Thoroughly clean and prepare the concrete base surface by removingany foreign material.

• Deliver, stockpile and cover usingtarpaulins or plastic sheets sufficient bedding sand for the complete project. Sand should onlybe drawn from the stockpile whenneeded for use that day.

• Place and spread sufficient sand for the planned amount of pavingthat day and screed to a nominaluncompacted thickness of 30mm(compacted thickness of 25mm).Note, it is bad practice to place and spread excessive amounts ofsand prior to laying because of possible exposure to rain or hotwindy conditions. These conditionscan result in moisture variationswithin the sand causing unevencompaction and poor surface finish. If wet sand results from rain, itshould be removed and replacedwith fresh dry sand.

• Rigid screed rails of aluminium, steel or timber are common forstraight surfaces. Flexible plastic or metal tubing can be used whencurved surfaces are required. Note: when the screed rails areremoved, the resulting groove mustbe filled and screeded ahead of thelaying face.

• Place set out string lines as requiredalong the perimeter of the project. If possible the project should be setout to minimise the amount of edgecutting of the Euro pavers.

• Bring Euro pavers up to the layingface and lay them within the stringlines whilst standing on pavers thathave already been laid. Lay paversso a nominal 2 to 5mm joint isachieved using either a ‘stack bond’or ‘stretcher bond’ pattern. As laying progresses, uneven jointsand non-aligned paving units should be corrected. Cuts can be placed asthe work progresses or separatelyon completion of the layed areaeither way the cuts but should beplaced before the paved surface is compacted.

• Commence initial compaction of thepaving using a high-frequency, lowamplitude plate compactor with aplate area of not less than 0.25m2.To protect the paver surface andprovide cushioning cover the metalbase with 12mm plywood or thick rubber-backed carpet square. Duringcompaction the pavers are vibrated into the bedding sand with somesand forced up into the joints providing initial lock-up betweenadjacent units. Initial compactionusually requires three passes of theplate compactor to be fully effectiveusing a systematic approach toensure all areas are compacted.

• Following initial compaction andprior to any traffic, spread joint filling sand over the pavement andbroom back and forward until alljoints are filled. Note: for ease offilling the joints, the joint filling

sand and pavement surface shouldbe dry. Topping up of the joint filling sand may be necessary at some future time due to self copaction or loss, so the pavementshould be monitored for this condition.

• Sweep the pavement clean removingany debris or accumulation of jointing sand.

• Commence final compaction of thepaving with two passes using a systematic approach to ensure allareas of the pavement are compacted. The process of brushing sand intothe joints and compacting should be repeated as often as necessary to fill the joints completely.

• Clean up of the site can be carriedout once the joints have been totallyfilled and final compaction completed.Any chipped or cracked paversshould be replaced and paversstained during installation cleaned.Only following completion of thiswork should any specified sealantsor protective coatings be applied to the pavers.

2.1.4 Euro pavers supported onproprietary pods• Pods are to be supported by rigid

concrete base. • Concrete base is to be constructed

with sufficient cross fall to preventponding

• Finished profile of concrete basemust reflect finished paver surface

• Pods are to be adjusted to ensurethat required surface levels arewithin acceptable tolerance.

2.2.1 Euro pavers bedded on sand.• Trim, compact (if necessary) and

prepare the subgrade to the desiredset out and levels. If the subgrade is not excavated to the correctdepth, the required base course willbe thinner than required and mayresult in failure of the pavement. If over excavation of the subgradeexists, a suitable filling materialthat achieves the specified CBRmust be placed and compacted tobring the subgrade up to thedesired level.

• Spread the base layer materials (typically crushed rock with a maximum aggregate size of 20mm)evenly over the subgrade to a depththat will result in a final compactedthickness complying with the project specification or engineers’ design. Compaction of roadbase is normally performed using a heavyplate compactor or vibrating roller.

• If a plate compactor is used, a maximum loose thickness placementlayer of 100mm is recommended. If a roller is used the loose layerthickness can be increased to200mm. Oversized or segregatedmaterial should be discarded.

• Deliver, stockpile and cover, usingtarpaulins or plastic sheets with sufficient bedding sand for the complete project. Sand should onlybe drawn from the stockpile whenneeded for use that day.
