If you’ve lost your pet, please give us a call to see if it’s
here. Your pet may be at the shelter waiting for you.
Like many of you, I am looking forward to our annual Bark B-Q, on
Friday, May 13th. Please use the form in this newsletter to order your
tickets or download the form from our website euclidpetpals.net. It’s
always a good time getting together with our loyal supporters and
enjoying good food and fellowship.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend our upcoming events.
We are excited to add an additional fundraiser this year. You and your
favorite pooch can come to the shelter on Sunday, June 12th, to enjoy a
relaxing manicure. Yes, you AND your dog will each get your nails
done by an experienced, licensed professional. Because space is
limited, you must make an appointment in advance. More details and
the reservation form are included in this issue. Thanks to our friends at
Raun’s Hairdresser and Day Spa, in Willoughby, for suggesting and
staffing this event. Cassie, owner of the Doggie Spa, in Wickliffe, will
also be on hand to if you just want to get your dog’s nails trimmed.
Summer will soon be upon us. This is a good time to make plans to
protect your pet from potential perils of the season. Stock up on flea
preventatives. Fleas are not only a nuisance, but can cause serious
illness in your pets. Mosquitoes likewise are dangerous to pets because
they put them at risk for heartworm. Ask your vet about heartworm
prevention. Make sure your pet is not exposed to extreme temperatures
and has plenty of fresh water to drink. A little forethought and planning
can help make summer a fun time for all.
We wish you all a safe and happy summer.
We wish you a safe and happy summer. Remember, we are always
looking for dedicated ADULT volunteers to help care for the animals
we shelter. We’d love to add you to our group. We invite you to come
to the shelter to see how you can help.

The New Year
Just a few years ago, we seldom heard about Lyme disease; and, when we did, it was not really an Ohio problem. Times have changed. In the latest report we received from the Ohio Department of Health, in March, twenty-seven of the eighty-eight counties in Ohio are endemic for Lyme disease. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recorded 1,353 new cases in Ohio. This is a 40% increase over 2014. As alarming as this is, it’s estimated that these numbers really only represent about 30% of the actual activity. The data is alarming. Cuyahoga County – 115 cases Lake County – 63 Ashtabula – 88 Summit – 65 Portage – 30 Geauga – 29
Ticks that carry Lyme disease are widespread. Their migration from Pennsylvania is nearly complete. They have been reported in virtually all parts of Ohio.
Bacteria that cause Lyme disease are carried and spread by the black legged or deer tick and the western black legged tick. This is what happens. After the tick attaches itself to a dog’s skin, it slowly inserts its head into the vascular bed of the skin. It begins to drink blood and deposit saliva. The saliva has an anticoagulant agent and often includes the Bartonella bacteria. The bacteria can use surface proteins to hide itself from the host’s immune cells. Thus, it is very difficult for the dog’s body to halt the bacterial invasion.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LYME DISEASE If the infection goes undetected
for two weeks, it can progress to the lymphatic tissue and synovial fluid in the joints. An infected dog may exhibit swollen joints and pain when walking. Antibiotics can help treat Lyme disease, but do not eliminate the organism. Lyme disease is a recurring condition that can strike repeatedly once a dog contracts it. The sooner you recognize that your dog has a tick and have it properly removed by a vet, the better the outcome for your dog. A course of doxycycline and careful monitoring are essential.
There are many products, often combined with flea preventatives, to deter ticks from attaching to your dog’s skin. Vaccinating dogs against Lyme disease is the best way to protect them. If a tick gets on a vaccinated dog, antibodies created by the vaccine will prevent bacterial migration via three independent mechanisms, protecting the body from Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is debilitating for humans. Those who contract the disease often cannot work anymore and suffer many painful, recurring maladies for the rest of their lives. I urge everyone to read more about Lyme disease and learn how to protect themselves and their pets from a disease that claims more than 30,000 cases annually.
Special Donations
We have two special
funds described below.
If you are interested in
supporting a specific
fund, please note it on
your check.
SOPHIE’S FUND
(for surgeries)
Sophie’s Fund was
created when a dog in our
care, named Sophie,
needed an operation to
repair a broken femur and
dislocated kneecap. A
plea was made to the
community for donations
to fund the surgery. The
response was so
overwhelming that EPP
was able to pay for
Sophie’s operation and
set aside money to be
used expressly for
surgeries.
FRED’S FUND
Money from Fred’s Fund
enables us to pay for
testing cats entering our
shelter for FIV,
heartworm, and leukemia.
Screening incoming cats
helps protect the cats in
our shelter. We also want
to be certain that the cats
we adopt out are healthy
and will not transmit a
disease to other pets in
their new homes. The
fund was created to honor
the memory of Frederick
Schmidt, father of
Sharon Jensen.

Share your love for pets. The Ohio Pet License Plates
are vehicle registration tags that raise funds for
education, spay and neuter of pets for low-income
families, and for dogs and cats adopted from qualifying
agencies. Even if you have already renewed your plates, you can still buy pet
friendly plates for just $25. If it’s not time to renew, your license fees will be pro-
rated. Go to your deputy registrar’s office or call 1-800-589-TAGS. Visit
www.petsohio.com for more information. Pet Pals received a $2,000 grant
from the Ohio Pet Fund in March to help pay for spays and neuters. Thank
you!
