Renovate and Celebrate With a heavy heart we mourn the sudden death of Al Sanchez, the business manager of the San Gabriel Mis-sion for the last 17 years. Not Only did Al handle the financial affairs of the church, but he also managed the cemetery and a myriad of other responsibilities too numerous to mention. After the clergy and office staff, he was the go-to person at the Rectory. His presence will be sorely missed. His ministry to the aging priests, especially in their many needs. He was a good listener as well as a kind and caring person. Al was a man of few words. His soft spo-ken wit could make you smile and endeared him to all who knew him well. The Fiesta weekend was an especially busy time for Al. He was exhausted, but left late Sunday night with the satisfaction that everything had gone well. Al touched many lives over the years, including the members of our Committee. We could depend on him to deposit the monthly funds from the second collection into a special account and give an accurate report of the mon-ey donated. Please remember Helen, his loving wife of 25 years, Robin, his eldest daughter and his twins. Elizabeth and Julie, in addition to his brother and extended family, in your prayers. RIP Al. Las weekend, $3,822.46 , was added to the Renovate and Celebrate bank account. We appreciate your continu-ous support.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE THREE

Can forgiveness be counted, weighted, or measured? Peter seems to think so when he asked Jesus how many times he should forgive his broth-er. As to be expected, Jesus’ answer should not be taken literally. Jesus does not mean 70x7 = 490 times. Jesus’ answer is not a number, but an atti-tude of forgiveness that comes from one’s own experience of having been forgiven. Is Jesus also saying that God’s forgiveness is infinite? No! The gospel from last Sunday and the fact that the King in today’s para-ble does not forgive the ungrateful debtor a second time makes this clear. The lesson from the parable is not simply to forgive an infinite number of times. The key to this par-able comes from Jesus’ introduction: “That is why the king-dom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants.” And the key phrase in this introduction is “the kingdom of heaven”. It is the expe-rience of God’s kingdom that makes us willing to nurture a forgiving heart. Fundamental to the Christian life is the before and after experience of Christ. Another expression for this is “conversion experience”. Can you identify in your life the time, events, or situations that mark your before and after experiences of Christ (who you were before Christ and the person you are in Christ)? If a Christian has not had a con-version experience religion can easily be reduced to rules, commandments and traditions. When this happens religion becomes an obligation and a burden. If religion becomes an obligation and a burden then there is no life in it, only duty. The heart of our Christian faith is the conviction that it is God, out of God’s own initiative, who has come to save us from ourselves. It is not enough to know this; there must be also the experience of having been forgiven, healed, loved and accepted (saved) by God as the entrance into the king-dom. When God’s kingdom irrupts into our lives it is then that the adventure with Christ begins. In today’s parable the ungrateful debtor did not appreci-ate what was given to him when his debt was forgiven. He thought he had fooled his master and gotten away with his debt. This is not so different with us. We are willing to take advantage of God’s love, mercy and compassion, but not willing to do with others as God has done with us. God is always willing to forgiveness, but we make void His for-giveness when we refuse to do likewise with others. Only the one who has truly experienced forgiveness and appreci-ates it is willing to grant others what he/she has received. This is called reconciliation. Forgiveness usually goes in one direction, but when forgiveness is mutual reconciliation takes places because both are moved beyond their previous positions. In Christ God is reconciling us to Himself. He becomes our Father/Mother, Savior/Redeemer, God/Shepard, and we become his people/sons and daughters.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Jesús no quiere decir 70X7= 490 veces.

¡No!

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“…For if we live, we live for the Lord” (Romans 14:8) LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES

This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday today, September 17, 2017. The theme is "Living as Mission-ary Disciples." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. This year’s theme begs the questions, “How often do we fail to realize that we are called to be Christ's witnesses to the world? How often do we reach out to our missing brothers and sisters by inviting them to join us at Mass or by asking why they no longer feel welcomed at Church? Did you know that through our baptism, we are called to proclaim the Good News to all people, everywhere and at all times?” Do we realize that our Baptism, Confirmation, and reception of the Eucharist bestow on us the grace we need to be disciples? Christ commands us to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. We are to proclaim his Good News to all people, every-where and at all times. After Christ promises the disciples that the Holy Spirit will come upon them, he ascends into heaven. The disciples, rather than heeding Christ’s command to be his witnesses, stare “intently at the sky.” It takes “two men dressed in white garments” asking, “Men of Galilee, why are you . . . looking at the sky?” for the disciples to begin to realize the meaning of Christ’s command (Acts 1:10-11). Do we, too, need more heavenly guidance to instill in us the courage and confidence to live as missionary disciples? Let us trust that all we need has been given to us for the purpose God has given us. Trust in the Lord and let your life reflect a missionary spirit!

MAY YOU REST IN ETERNAL PEACE MR. ALFRED SANCHEZ

Cub Scout Pack 261 Is looking for your worn and tat-tered US flags. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the very few or-ganizations that have an official

code for flag retirement. Respect for our nation’s symbols is an integral part of being a reverent,

responsible Scout; thus we have specific rules for the appropriate retirement of the United States flag. So please drop off your US flags at the rectory and we shall dispose of them with dignity and respect. God Bless America!!

TO DONATE YOUR OLD FLAGS

Dear Parishioners,

As we celebrate God’s ETERNAL love that comes to us in the person of Jesus Sunday after Sunday, I want to remind you that next weekend Sister Lisa Valentini, MSC has been invited to come to speak with us about the Missions and the work of her community, the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Mission Co-op Appeal gives us a chance to respond to Jesus’ mandate to “Go out to the ends of the earth and spread the Good News.” Sister will share with us some of her own ex-periences in the countries where she has been in mission over the past 34 years – including Perú, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti – and just recently a visit with her Sisters in Southern India. Let us plan to be generous in next week’s second collection so that MSC Sisters throughout the world will be able to live up to their call “to be the heart of God on earth. ” May God reward our generosity with the “hundredfold” He promises.

Queridos Hermanos/as en Cristo,
