Se necesita una gran cantidad de dinero para hacer algunos de los pro-yectos más grandes necesarios para mejorar la apariencia de nuestros edificios históricos. Gracias por su generosi-dad y paciencia. Su apoyo continuo hará que nuestra vi-sión sea una realidad que refleje el orgullo colectivo que tenemos por nuestras casas de adoración.

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE THREE Today we have another parable about the rejection of God’s kingdom. This para-ble is very similar to the one from last week about the two sons. The vineyard is a sym-bol of the Kingdom. The owner planted a vineyard and leased it. At harvest time the owner sent his servants to collect his share of the harvest. The owner’s servants are bitten and some were killed. The action against the servants makes reference to what Israel had done with the prophets God had sent throughout history. Finally, the owner sent his son, thinking that the son would be respect-ed. The son too – making reference to what will happen to Jesus- was killed. Here again Jesus asked the chief priests and elders what the owner of the vineyard would do. Jesus affirms their answer: “Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." The demands that God placed on Judaism in producing fruit for the Kingdom are also placed on us that claim Jesus as our Lord and Redeemer. Entrance into God’s kingdom is accessible to all who are willing to adopt the vision of the Kingdom. Once in the Kingdom, God demands the fruits of Kingdom: lives that witness to the values and principles of the Kingdom. The same demands that God placed on Juda-ism are also placed on us today, otherwise, the Kingdom will also be taken from us. What does the parable reveal to us about the God of Kingdom? The parables about the King-dom reveal the generosity, compassion and justice of God. Yet, the parables also reveal that God is demanding. God demands fruitfulness from what God has generously given. So, the question is also asked of us: What kind of fruit are we producing as church, as families, as individuals? Are we producing sweet or sour grapes in the vineyard of the Lord? How do we see the call that we have received as Chris-tians, Disciples of Christ? Do we see it as a blessing and a grace or do we see it as a demand and a burden? When there is no experience of the encounter with God, or perhaps no awareness that we have been touched by God, religion can easily become demanding, oppressive and burdensome. We cannot merely rely on the experiences and witness of others; we cannot rely merely on the good actions of the past. We have to continue to take the risk to trust, to love, to be compassionate today. To be a citizen of God’s King-dom implies living in the present, the past is already in God’s hands. It is the experience of love, mercy and com-passion that makes the differences as to whether religion becomes oppressive and burdensome or a blessed call to freedom. Take the risk, then, to love and to be compassion-ate today; take the risk today to be a citizen of God’s King-dom.

Hoy tenemos otra parábola sobre el rechazo del Reino de Dios. Esta parábola es similar a la parábola de los dos hermanos que escuchamos la semana pasada. La viña es un símbolo del Reino. El dueño plantó una viña y la rentó. Al

tiempo apropiado el dueño de la viña mandó a sus siervos para recibir la parte que le correspondía de la cosecha. A unos de los siervos los golpearon y a otros los mataron. La acción en contra de los siervos nos recuerda a lo que Israel hizo en contra de los profetas que Dios le mandó. Final-mente, el dueño manda a su hijo, pensando que lo respeta-ran. El hijo –haciendo referencia a lo que Jesús sufrirá- lo sacaron de la viña y lo mataron. Aquí otra vez Jesús les pregunta a los sumos sacerdotes y ancianos lo que el dueño hará. Jesús afirma su respuesta y les dice: “Por esta razón les digo que les será quitado a ustedes el Reino de Dios y se le dará a un pueblo que produzca sus frutos''. Las exigencias de producir frutos para el Reino que Dios puso en los judíos, también recaen sobre nosotros que tomamos a Jesús como nuestro Señor y Redentor. La entra-da al Reino es accesible a todos que están dispuestos a adoptar la visión del Reino. Como ciudadanos del Reino, Dios exige frutos : vidas que den testimonio de los valores fundamentales del Reino. Las mismas exigencias que Dios puso en los judíos recaen sobro nosotros hoy en día, a lo contrario, el reino también será quitado de nosotros. ¿Qué nos revela la parábola acerca del Reino de Dios? Las pará-bolas del Reino nos revelan la generosidad, compasión y justicia de Dios. También, las parábolas nos revelan que Dios es exigente. Dios exige frutos de lo que Él nos ha da-do generosamente. Entonces, la pregunta también se nos hace a nosotros hoy: ¿Qué tipo de frutos estamos produ-ciendo como iglesia, familias e individuos? ¿Producimos frutos dulces o agrios en la viña del Señor? ¿Cómo entendemos el llamado a la vida cristiana, al discipulado de Cristo? ¿Lo vemos como una bendición y gracia o solo como una obligación y carga? Cuando no he-mos tenido una experiencia del encuentro con Dios, o qui-zás, cuando no hemos hecho conciencia de cómo Dios vie-ne a nosotros, la religión fácilmente se convierte en una obligación y carga opresiva. No podemos confiarnos sola-mente en las experiencias y testimonios de otros; no pode-mos simplemente confiarnos en las acciones buenas del pasado. Tenemos que seguir tomando riesgos de confianza, de amor y compasión cada día. Ser ciudadano del Reino implica vivir en el presente, el pasado ya está en manos de Dios. Es la experiencia de amor, compasión y misericordia lo que hace la diferencia: si la religión es una obligación y carga opresiva o una bendita llamada a la libertad. Toma el riesgo, entonces, de amar y ser compasivo hoy; toma el riesgo hoy de ser un ciudadano del Reino de Dios.

“I will give you rest.” -Jesus

THE REST WE NEED

When Jesus came on the scene, people were stressed-out and worn-out trying to please God. They were so busy try-ing to do good in order to be good that they couldn’t see how good life was or how good God really was. They couldn’t enjoy God because they felt they never measured up, at least in regards to the religious laws. They felt they always needed a little more holiness and a few more good deeds before God could accept them. They saw God as a legislator, judge, jury, a law-enforcer, a cosmic policeman who was obsessed with keeping people in line. That was one reason why people reacted so strongly to Jesus’ apparent indifference to sin and the sinner. Jesus claimed to be God, yet Jesus didn’t slap the cuffs on anyone. He didn’t hand out tickets or death sentences. He just loved people and He offered them full and free access to God. When Jesus said, “I will give you rest,” people gasped. It was a blast of fresh-air in a law-stifled atmosphere. “Rest? Really? What does he mean? I thought serving God was hard work.” Jesus said that he came to make life easier. That was the opposite of what the people had experienced. For them, the law was a heavy burden and religion was about doing more and more and more in order to be and be seen as good. Good people were people who knew how to work harder. Sounds a lot like our culture today. Religious and non-religious alike are ob-sessed with being better people. We buy self-help books and DVDs, we go to seminars, get counseling, make New Year’s resolutions. This is not to say that any of this is bad by itself, but it really epitomizes our conviction that if we try hard enough we can perfect ourselves. Only God is perfect. We are often worn out and desperately in need of rest. Not physical rest, but spiritual rest. We need time with God, we need peace with God and with ourselves.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 3517 INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES FUNDRAISER

San Gabriel Mission Knights of Columbus will hold their annual Intellectual Disabilities Fund Raiser beginning October 15th after all masses. Knights will be handing out free Tootsie Roll candy and any/or all donations are welcomed. SGMHS Students Tour College Universities on the Pacific Northwest Trip

San Gabriel Mission High School students were given the opportunity to tour college universities in Oregon and Washington states. This allowed the students to learn about the oppor-tunities available to them in higher ed-ucation in the Pacific Northwest. On the trip students visited Gon-zaga University, University of Wash-ington, Seattle University, Washing-ton State University, Willamette Uni-versity, Lewis & Clarke College, Uni-versity of Oregon and Oregon State University.

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Exploring the Scientific Method

Our middle school students started a 4-week science experiment, in which they attempt to figure out which soil type will be the best for plant growth. Learning about our environment and how to work with our natural resources is a vital teaching piece about responsibility to our world and the generations to follow. Through these experiments students also learn about the scientific method and different variable types in an experiment.
