F F i i r r s s t t P P r r e e s s s s But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 February 2019 The Newsletter of First Presbyterian Church, Morrilton, Arkansas LETTER FROM THE PASTOR After so many weeks of waiting it’s hard to believe I am finally here. The past two weeks I have been constantly amazed by how welcoming and helpful everyone has been. I want to say thank you again to everyone who helped me move in, and furnish my house, and make the transition from Michigan to Arkansas as smooth as possible. The gift of hospitality and welcome is well represented among the members of this congregation! I greatly enjoyed meeting so many of you on Sunday. After so many weeks of waiting and praying, it was a blessing to finally be able to worship with you. I look forward to getting to know everyone better over the next few months. Feel free to stop by the office to say hello. For the time being my office hours will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9am-12pm. You can also call and make an appointment if those times don’t fit your schedule. This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the church’s mission statement “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.” Micah 6:8 is a verse I know well, and it’s hard to find one that more succinctly sums up the call of the Church. After all, are these not the things that Jesus taught us to do through his ministry? Didn’t he teach us to stand up for justi ce for the poor and marginalized of our community when he turned over tables in the temple in protest of unjust practices (Mark 11:15-17)? Didn’t he show us how to embody loving kindness when he said “let he who is without sin cast the first stone (John 8:1-11)? Didn’t he teach us to walk humbly with God when he taught us to pray “Our Father who art in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-13)? In times of transition I find it is good to reflect on the past while also looking towards the future. As we begin this new season in the life of the church, I invite you to reflect with me upon our mission statement. In what ways are we already living into the words of the prophet Micah? And in what ways can we more fully live into these words? How are we working for justice, and in what areas of our community do we see a need for more justice? How do we show kindness to our neighbors, and which of our neighbors could use a little more kindness in their lives? How do we walk humbly with God, and how might we walk even closer with God? No matter where we are in our faith journeys, God is always calling us deeper into relationship with Him. May we discern together where that calling may lead us as a congregation. Blessings, Pastor Ainsley

LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

After so many weeks of waiting it’s hard to believe I am finally here.

Didn’t he teach us to stand up for justice for the poor and marginalized of our community when he turned over tables in the temple in protest of unjust practices (Mark 11:15-17)?

Pastor Ainsley
