eTrack 5-1 Bs&Dr (Key-Em_BPM-140).wav The same backing, but with bass and drums only.

    Original Key

    E Minor/G Major

    Original Tempo

    Quarter note = 140 BPM

    Suggested Scales

E Minor and C Lydian (both scales are the same notes as G Major), E Minor Pentatonic, E Blues

    Pauls Notes

This is a rock track that makes it easy to get used to the Lydian mode if its new to you. Lydian mode is based around the IV chord, and in this eTrack the

first four bars are centered around C Major, the IV chord in the key of G Major. It varies between C Major and D Major, but both chords are played over a

C bass note. I also think of these as the VI and VII chords in the key of E Minor (the second four bars are centered around an E Minor chord).

All that info may sound a little confusing if youre not familiar with music theory and scale degrees, but the bottom line is this: just use the E Minor scale

the whole time and youll be rocking. (The E Minor scale has all the same notes as C Lydian mode in G Major). If you emphasize the F# note over the first

four bars, it will give you more of that C Lydian sound. The E Minor Pentatonic and E Blues scales will work here, too.

I set the tempo at 140 because its not too fast, and I like doing 16th-note sweep-picking and economy-picking licks at this speed. For my lead tone, I

used P035 STACK LEAD, but I edited the sound a bit. I pressed the EFFECTS button on eBands front panel, and then I navigated over to the PATCH EDITpage, where I changed AMP from BOSS DRIVE to HEAVY LEAD. I also added some more delay to the sound. This patch uses ANALOG for the delay type,

and I love it because of its dark, vintage tone.

This eTracks featured lick is based on a lick I borrowed a long time ago from my old friend Russ Parrish, a great guitarist who used to be a GIT instructor

like myself. It uses some economy picking and sliding, and its a real finger twister. It works great as a C Lydian lick or an E Minor lick, and I play it with

16th notes. I just learned that Russ is currently in a band called Steel Panther that parodies 80s rock. Theyre really funnycheck em out!

    Original Key

    D Minor

    Original Tempo

    Quarter note = 76 BPM

    Suggested Scales

    D Minor, D Dorian, D Minor Pentatonic, D Blues

    Pauls Notes

I love big, heavy, slow rock, and I can visualize a massive T-Rex plodding along with this track. The actual tempo is 76 BPM, but I tend to think of it as

double that152 BPMbecause I like playing 16th notes at that tempo. (Those are actually 32nd notes at 76 BPM.) The notes in my lick are all at this

fast rhythmic grouping and use alternate picking. Slow the track down if its too fast for you.

I used P063 R-FIER LEAD here. This patch is extra cool for this particular eTrack because it has a delay thats almost timed to 8th notes at the 76 BPM

    tempo.

For the featured lick, Im just sequencing scale patterns with D Minor and D Blues scales. Im playing a lot of notes without many string crosses; that is,

I play a lot of notes on one string before moving on to the next. These types of sequences really help me play fast, and theyll help you, too. Crossing

from one string to another tends to slow ones picking down.

eTrack Volume 5, Number 2: Featured Lick

    Play this simple repeating phrase

all over the neck, adjusting it to the scale.

This pattern is for practicing playing three notes

per string. (In this example, the key is D Minor.)

This is the same idea as the previous example, with the D Dorian

and D Blues Scales ascending and descending.

eTrack 5-3 Lick.mp3 The backing track with Paul playing the featured lick.

    Original Key

    G Major (A Dorian Mode)

    Original Tempo

    Quarter note = 110 BPM

    Suggested Scales

A Dorian (the same notes as G Major or E Minor), A Minor Pentatonic, A Blues

    Pauls Notes

This eight-bar eTrack has a real A Dorian sound, and the chords are kind of cool. Im using a traditional open-string Am7 chord, and I just slide that two-

finger shape up and down the neck, adjusting it as necessary for major and minor 6ths. The first four bars alternate between the open Am7 and that

same shape up two frets (playing the fourth fret on the D string and third fret on the B string, with all other strings open). This slide-up gives you the IV

and VI chord tones over the A, and the major VI gives you that Dorian sound. Over the second four bars, I keep the A bass pumping, but I play the D and

B strings at the fifth fret, and then I move that same shape up to the seventh fret (with all the other strings still open).

For the rhythms, I used a clean tone with eBands ROTARY effect. You can find this and other cool effects in eBand by pressing the EFFECTS button

and then navigating to the right until you get to the PATCH EDIT page. (See the eBand JS-8 Owners Manualfor more info on using effects and editing

patches). I recorded two rhythm tracks with the ROTARY effect and panned em left and right for a cool stereo sound. For my lead tone, I used P064 CLEANTHEATER, an eBand patch created by my friend (and fellow BOSS specialist) Rob Marcello. This patch is also in the BOSS GT-10 Guitar Effects Processor. I

tweaked the verb and delay, and switched my pickups while playing this clean sound.

I got the phrasing concept for the featured lick from Kei Morioka. I hung out with him at GIT in the 90s, and hes a really good player and an awesome

guy. Keis idea is a really cool way of looking at the neck diagonally in fourths, fifths, and octaves. Add a few slides in and it really sounds great.

    Original Key

    G Major

    Original Tempo

    Quarter note = 81 BPM

    Suggested Scales

G Major and G Minor Pentatonic, G Blues, G Mixolydian and Dorian

    Pauls Notes

I had a lot of fun on this one, a bluesy eight-bar jam in G. Its kind of in the Freddie King style, and it starts on the IV chord (C). I really like switching

between G Major Pentatonic, G Minor Pentatonic, and G Blues scales on a tune like thisits so cool.

I used eBand patch P007 BLUES SESSION for my solo. This patchs sound is based on a CLEAN TWIN amp model. I also used one of my guitars thats been

sitting in its case in my garage for awhile. The neck has straightened a bit and the low strings buzz, but I actually like that buzzy sound.

I tabbed out the fast licks for you; they have lots of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and blues notes. Have fun!

eTrack Volume 5, Number 4: Featured Lick

These are fast triplet licks using the G Dorian and G Blues scales.

In the first example, the beginning note is a pickup and the second note is on the first beat.
