Remember from yesterday that the following are the characteristics of Medieval Romances:

1. Chivalry the code of conduct that knights had to follow; emphasized honor, truth, protection for the weak, and fair fighting

2. Hero-Knight – Courageous but not invulnerable knight who does noble deeds.

3. Knight’s love for his lady – Often called “Courtly Love,” secret, between members of nobility, not between husband and wife

4. Imaginary Setting – faraway land or vague place

5. Supernatural Elements – monsters, giants, dwarfs, banshees, ghosts, etc.

6. Disguises – concealed or lied about identities

Tobin/McGeady7. Repetition of The Number Three

I’m going to show you to how to find examples of these characteristics in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, then annotate them in your book. Bonus if you make other types of annotations as well.

This selection begins at the start of a New Years feast at King Arthur’s court in Camelot. Before anyone ahs started eating, the festivities are interrupted by an immense green-glowing knight who suddenly appears at the hall door. The knight rides a green horse and is armed with a gigantic axe.

This horseman hurtles in, and the hall enters;Riding to the high platform, recked he no danger; Not a greeting he gave as the guests he o’erlooked,Nor wasted his words, but “Where is,” he said,“The captain of this crowd? Keenly I wishTo see that sire with sight, and to himself say my say.”

He swaggered all aboutTo scan the host so gayHe halted, as if in doubtWho in that hall held sway.

There were stares on all sides as the stranger spoke .For much they did marvel at what it might meanThat a horseman and a horse should have such a hue,Grow green as the grass, and greener it seemed,Than green fused on gold more glorious by far.All the onlookers eyed him and edged nearerAnd awaited in wonder what he would do…

Then Arthur before the high platform that entrance beholdsAnd hailed him, as behooved, for he had no fear. And said, “Fellow, in faith, you have found fair welcome…”

We DoNow with your partner as you read aloud, find examples of the 7 characteristics of MR in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, then annotate them in your book WITH STICKIES. Bonus if you make other types of annotations (CH, FL, TH, SYM, Q, R) as well. Read from p. 163 line 30 – 165 line 115.

You Do/HomeworkOn your own, find examples of the 5 out of 7 characteristics of MR in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and annotate them in your book. Bonus if you make at least 3 other types of annotations (CH, FL, TH, SYM, Q, R) as well. Read from p. 165 line 115 – p. 170 line 308.
