CHALLENGES FROM OUTSIDE Political challenges: when our network was founded the po- litical environment was very fa- vourable. Most colleagues from artists associations, educational institutes and museums were open-minded, as was the public attitude in all parts of Europe. For different reasons most tex- tile professionals were curious and ready to get in contact with their peers in other countries. But this political climate has cooled down in the past 20 year. Most people are now focus- ing more on their region and country. In the North and the West of Europe hedgehog at- titudes are shown and there is less preparedness to invest costs for “foreigners”, be it time or money. I consider it inceasingly difficult to find hosts for our conferences who are committed to assist in organising afford- able places to stay and attractive event & conference locations as was the case ‒ in an exemplary way ‒ at our 20 years celebra- tion in Kaunas/Lithuania. Challenges relating to content: in the whole of europe there currently is a series of exhibi- tions in art museums, focusing on the relation between art and textile, in parts accompanied by detailed literature to the subject. From the part of textile artists we hear sighs of relief: “Finally the contribution by textile artists is being acknowledged”, is what we often here in our circles. Unfortunately this attention from the art scene is a bit tricky. There is reason to believe that we will have to be critical with this development and that we need to have a closer look at the art market and how it is func- tioning. Not everything one sees here is desirable and deserves the glitter of the money spend here! The exhibitions that are currently on view to the theme Art & Textiles are giving the impression to be managed by art curators, not well informed about the different facets of tex- tile art and using a narrow no- tion of what they call “fine art”. This is about new entrances to the art market, unfortunately to a large extend corrupted be- cause driven by the interests of money investment (so-called collectors). THE STRUGGLE OF THE PREROG- ATIVE OF INTERPRETATION On the occasion of recent exhibition visits I have per- ceived this struggle, some- times it was even openly expressed. The multiplicity of voices and opinions, as trans- mitted via the internet is shat- tering the “Grale-Seekers”; art museum directors, art curators and their scientific guardians, explaining art to the impressed audience. Once declared art there is a money value. One seeks to keep the prerogative of interpretation for one's own circle of 'choos- en people'. The high priests of art want to reign over their interpretations of art on the penalty of insignificance for their victims. The reputation is determining the value. In a time of diversity of opinions the self-awareness of these judges is in danger. Textile art, not having to fear any plurality of opinions, is not affected! In my blog I have started to address this controversy and I would be very pleased if I could hear your opinions to this theme. Beatrijs Sterk

ART & TEXTILES IN RECENT EXHIBITIONS

A new period in the existence of the ETN Secretariat has started without the accompanying publication of Textile Forum magazine. This means that a lot more information will have to be published via the ETN Newsletter in order to keep you informed on forthcoming exhibitions, competitions and workshops/meetings. For those of you who were used to read Textile Forum, there is a modest alternative now: I have started a blog on the internet that should be well on its way when you receive this newsletter: www.textile-forum-blog.org.

After stopping TF publica-tion, the editing house Textile-Forum-Service had to be closed officially for reasons of tax regulations. Dietmar Laue took over the TextileForum website www.tfs-etn.com, where my blog will be available under the button „Blog: tf news“ so that I will be able to use the informa-tion from this website e. g. the Calendar, the Data Base and all the available links.

The ETN website www.ETN-net.org will of course further-more exist, the care of keeping it updated with ETN means will be a new challenge that we are sure to master well.

I hope that the ETN Secretar-iat with its newsletter & website and my new blog will be able to keep you up-to-date on all relevant textile events.

CHALLENGES FROM OUTSIDEPolitical challenges: when our network was founded the po-litical environment was very fa-vourable. Most colleagues from artists associations, educational institutes and museums were open-minded, as was the public attitude in all parts of Europe. For different reasons most tex-tile professionals were curious and ready to get in contact with their peers in other countries.

But this political climate has cooled down in the past 20 year. Most people are now focus-ing more on their region and country. In the North and the West of Europe hedgehog at-titudes are shown and there is less preparedness to invest costs for “foreigners”, be it time or money.

I consider it inceasingly difficult to find hosts for our conferences who are committed to assist in organising afford-able places to stay and attractive event & conference locations as was the case ‒ in an exemplary way ‒ at our 20 years celebra-tion in Kaunas/Lithuania.Challenges relating to content:in the whole of europe there currently is a series of exhibi-tions in art museums, focusing on the relation between art and textile, in parts accompanied by detailed literature to the subject. From the part of textile artists we hear sighs of relief: “Finally the contribution by textile artists is being acknowledged”, is what we often here in our circles.

Unfortunately this attention from the art scene is a bit tricky. There is reason to believe that we will have to be critical with this development and that we need to have a closer look at the art market and how it is func-tioning. Not everything one sees here is desirable and deserves the glitter of the money spend here! The exhibitions that are currently on view to the theme Art & Textiles are giving the impression to be managed by art curators, not well informed about the different facets of tex-tile art and using a narrow no-tion of what they call “fine art”. This is about new entrances to the art market, unfortunately to a large extend corrupted be-cause driven by the interests of money investment (so-called collectors).

THE STRUGGLE OF THE PREROG-ATIVE OF INTERPRETATIONOn the occasion of recent exhibition visits I have per-ceived this struggle, some-times it was even openly expressed. The multiplicity of voices and opinions, as trans-mitted via the internet is shat-tering the “Grale-Seekers”; art museum directors, art curators and their scientific guardians, explaining art to the impressed audience. Once declared art there is a money value. One seeks to keep the prerogative of interpretation for one's own circle of 'choos-en people'. ART & TEXTILES Subtitled 'Fabric as Material and Concept in Modern Art from Klimt to the Present', this major exhibi-tion is on view at the Kunstmu-seum Wolfsburg (Hollerplatz 1, D-38440) from 12th Oct. 2013 to 2nd March 2014. Fea turing some 200 pieces by 80 artists as well as work by a fur ther 60 anonymous artists from all over the world.

Attracting 3,000 visitors from all over the world on its open ing day, the "Art & Textiles" exhibi-tion is divided into 11 chapters: 1) Art Nouveau and the interre-lation of art and craftsmanship; 2) Weaving and design before and during the Bauhaus period; 3) The 1950s and the present: The In- formal and the birth of textile art; 4)-6) The 1960s and 1970s: Felt/Fluxus/Anti-Form; Soft Art and Arte Povere, Minimal Art and Postminimalism; 7) Between Cultures: Africa, America, Asia, the Orient and the Occident; 8) Spider Women: Bourgeois/Trockel/Hartoum/Amer; 9) Fab-rics between mind and matter; 10) ArchiTextiles: The clothed wall from the Middle Ages to the present and 11) From mummies’ nets to the World Wide Web.

Researched with great atten-tion to detail and elaborately in-stalled, the Wolfsburg exhibition is presented as a comprehen-sive project providing insights into the influence of textiles on modern art, beginning with Art Nouveau; it could be rec-ommended to a wider public as an introduction to the subject of art and textiles if it were only defined by a fuller apprecia- tion of the textile medium. A catalogue book is published under the same title (ISBN 978-3-7752-3627-5; 392 pages, 400 colour illustrations; German and English editions).

In slightly reduced form, the ex-hibition will be repeated from 21st March to 22nd June 2014 at the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie (Konrad-Adenauer-Str. 30-32, D-70173).

DECORUM – ARTIST CARPETS AND TAPESTRIESSubtitled “Tapis et tapisseries d'artistes”, this major French exhibition is on view at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (11 avenue du Président Wilson, F-75116) from 11th October 2013 to 9th February 2014. It presents exhibits by more than 110 art ists dating from 1880 to 2000. Its artistic director is Marc Camille Chaimowicz, born in France in 1947 and resident in London.

The exhibition is divided into five periods in which the art-ists are categorised. The period from 1880 to 1940 includes early reformers and later Bauhaus art-ists such as William Morris and Anni Albers; from 1940 to 1970, cartoon painters and graphic artists such as Jean Lurçat and Victor Vasarely or sculptors like Alexander Calder; from 1970 to 1980, Magdalena Abakanowicz and the gamut of participants in the Lausanne Biennials; from 1980 to 2000, Rosemarie Trockel and, surprisingly, Vivi enne West-wood; and as of 2000, 32 artists of whom few have featured in the textile scene, such as Pae White, a graduate in painting and sculpture who occasionally has designs of hers executed by an industrial jacquard mill.

The Paris show attempts the break with the traditional hauteur of the current thinking in art history. Like Wolfsburg, it seeks to present ‘new’ angles on the subject and to give prominence to perspectives that transcend specific periods and cultures. A catalogue book of the same title has been published by Skira Flammanion, Paris 2013 (ISBN 978-2-08130-019-4; 224 pages, 115 colour illus., French text).

TO OPEN EYES – ART AND TEXTILES FROM THE BAUHAUS TILL TODAYExhibition form 17 November 2013 to 16 February 2014 at the Bielefeld Kunsthalle (Arthur-Ladebeck-Str., D-33602)

'To open eyes' refers to Josef Albers. The exhibition makers are aiming at opening visitors eyes for „ a material in the art, loaden with many prejudices...“ „Our exhibition is trying to overcome categories in order to find a Leit-motiv of the avantgarde of the 20th century. Works will be shown to put these categories and a hier-archy of categories into question“. In this case the Bauhaus weaver Benita Koch-Otte was offering the impulse; she was the artistic leader of the weaving workshop in Bethel, close to Bielefeld known as the town of linen.

It is very positive to see so many textiles, e. g. round about 15 Wiener Werkstätte designers, a detailed documentation of the Amsterdam company Metz & Co with many works by Sonia Delaunay but also by Bart van der Lek and others. As German textile art achievements from af-ter World War 2 Sofie Dawo and Marianne Meyer-Weißgerber are shown, the last mentioned only locally known.

More or less a second part of the exhibition is presenting artists who are using fabrics, threads or soft materials without a recognizable textile training, mainly male artists. Among 27 artists there are 8 women: Rosemarie Trockel, Andrea Zittel, Charline von Heyl, Ulla von Brandenburg, Aiko Tezuko, Tracey Emin, Friederike Feld- mann and Frauke Eigen. Among the male artists are the usual suspects: Christo, Palermo, Warhol, Polke, Boethi and lo- cally known artists like Friedrich Teepe. A catalogue book is published under the same name by Kerber Verlag, Bielefeld, 2013 (ISBN 978-3-86678-919-7; 231 pages, 222 colour-and 50 black & white illustrations; German text).

EXHIBITIONS

THREAD POWERThe Dutch exhibition „Draad-kracht (Thread Power)“, held from 15 March till 17 August 2014, at the Museum for Modern Art in Arnhem (Utrechtse Straat 87, NL-6812 AA Arnhem) will show an art exhibition with tex-tiles as a metaphor between art and craft, between personal and social themes. About 26 interna-tional artists from diverse parts of the world, in most cases younger and not yet well-know (except for Lin Tianmiao/China and Christien Meindertsma/NL). The works are very diverse from the video installation ‘Thread Route’ by Kimsooja/Korea, honouring old handcrafted tech-niques to collective artworks like ‘Crossover Collective’ by Flour Nijdeken/NL.

GOBELINThe Danish group of tapestry weavers “Gobelin-vaevere” (http://vaevning.dk) was show-ing works by 20 weavers at Sophienholm in Lyngby near Copenhagen and will show this exhibition again in April 2014 at the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art, Applied Art and Architecture in Kolding (Aeble-haven 23, DK-6000 Kolding). There may be no country in Europe where the art of tapestry weaving, executed by the artists themselves, is so well-organised and showing such a high level of achievements. The Danish Tap-estry Group was formed in 1988 and so far had two major exhibi-tions in 1988 and in 2002. The current exhibition is showing all the well-known Danish weavers. – A catalogue is available at the exhibition at 80 DKK.

FEATHERED WALL-HANINGS FROM ANCIENT PERUExhibition from 16 September 2013 till 2 March 2014 at the Met-ropolitan Museum of Art (MET) Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, New York, NY 10028-0198, USA).

The exhibition is showing 12 impressive feather panels, prob-ably hangings, made by the Wari peoples of southern Peru be-tween about 700 and 1000. They rank among the most luxurious and unusual works created by textile artists in Peru prior to the Spanish conquest in 1532. There is a book published by the MET in 2012 „Peruvian Featherwork“ with these panels together with other feather pieces. INCA – KINGS OF THE ANDESThis major exhibition at the Lin-den-Museum Stuttgart (Hegelpl. 1, D-70174) is taking place from 12 Oct. 2013 to 16 March 2014.

This exhibition is said to be the first in Europe to be held entirely on the Inca, ignoring e. g. the „Inca's capac hucha“ exhibition shown in autumn 2010 at the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam, also presenting the cultures of the Inca Empire.

The exhibition in Stuttgart is showing objects from museum lenders in Peru, London, Madrid, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Basel, Göteborg, Antwerpen as also from its own and other public and private collections. The objects, a. o. textiles, are throwing light on the religion, architecture, economy and po-litical power of the Inka empire (www.lindenmuseum.de).

Afterwards the exhibition will be presented at Lokschuppen-Rosenheim from 11 April until 23 Nov. 2014 (www.lokschuppen.de).

The exhibition is accompa-nied by a catalogue in German language (ISBN 978-3-8053-4657-3; 346 pages, many colour and black & white illustrations, text in German).

TEXPOARTThe 3rd edition of this inter-national textile art exhibition, organized by the Romanian Fine Artists Union and the George Enescu University of Arts, Faculty of Visual Arts and Design in Iaşi, Romania, will take place from 1 to 30 April 2014. Project organiser is lecturer PhD Miruna Mihaela Haşegan, e-mail: [email protected]

SKIN TO SKINThe exhibition “Skin to Skin über Haut und Häute (Skin to Skin – on Skin and leather)” is taking place from 1 Decem-ber 2013 to 9 June 2014 at the Gewerbemuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland (Kirchplatz 14, CH-8400). This new exhibition is completing the “Tattoo” exhibi-tion that was installed in Autumn 2013 and is focusing on the theme of Skin in the art, in de-sign and science. A further pres-entation is showing “Material ar-chive: Leather and other animal skins”. The museum is offering an additional programme with lectures, workshops and films.

THE EXHIBITION 'MADE IN OCEANIA'From 12 Oct. 2013 to 27 April 2014 the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne (Cäcilienstr. 29-30, D-50667) is presenting the special exhibition 'Made in Oceania: Tapa – Art and Social Land-scapes' with 250 unique master-pieces from the museum's own collection in combination with loans from major institutions such as the Museum of New Zealand in Wellington or the Australian Museum in Sydney. Many of them will be shown in Europe for the first time. The selection ranges from the oldest objects dating back to the 18th century – the Cook Collection – to contem-porary artworks from renowned Polynesian or Melanesian artists. A catalogue is available (www.made-in-oceania.com).

INDIAN TEXTILE ARTThe exhibition “Himmelzelte für die Göttin. Indische Textilkunst (canopies for Godesses - Indian Textile Art)” is taking place from 13 December 2013 till 13 April 2014 at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich (Gablerstr. 15, CH-8002). On show are large-format textiles with painted or printed images, used in Gujarat to mark holy places of the Goddesses like a tent. These textiles are part of the collection of Dr. Eberhard Fischer, former Director of the Rietberg, who donated his col-lections to the museum.

9th INTL. FIBER BIENNIALOn view from March 7 to April 26, 2014 at Snyderman-works Gal- leries in Philadelphia (303 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PH 19106, USA). Still in 2012 this event was part of the Fiber Philadelphia organization that has stopped after its 2012 event (“The bottom line is funding and our volunteer infrastructure. It is not sustain-able. Everyone of us is busy with their own work and livehoods”) So we are left with the event at Snyderman: On show will be 42 artists, mainly American, and 24 of them already on show at the 2012 Biennial. This makes the impression a gallery pro-moting its artists more than a real international fiber art bien-nial! It will still be worthwhile visiting due to the ‘great names’ among the participants: Lia Cook, Virginia Davis, Michael James, Jon Eric Riis, Cynthia Schira and others. The only European name that I recog-nized as such: Grethe Wittrock from Denmark. B. Sterk

MUMMIES – LIFE BEYOND DEATHExhibition from 3 Febr. till 31 Aug. 2014 at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands (Brink 1, NL-9401 HS Assen). On show will be all sort of information about mummies and mummifica-tion together with present scien-tific research about mummies.

TRADEMARK PROTECTION BY INVISIBLE MARKINGSIn a newly developed process; transparent marking inks are printed across large areas of safety markings on textile substrates us-ing the ink-jet process: The secu-rity can be detected by means of an infrared sensor and converted into a visible security code. The new security inks can be com-bined with decorative inkjet-tex-tile colours, thus design and secu-rity, both for apparel and techni-cal textiles, can be produced in a single print process. This is a joint project by the ‘Institut für Textilchemie und Chemiefasern (ITCF)’ in Denkendorf/D and the ‘Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automa-tisierung (IPP)’ in Stuttgart. – Press text, 2 December 2013

LA DAME A LA LICORNEThis famous tapestry series of six tapestries has undergone a conservation in order to take away dust, to diminish the weight of the tapestries on display and to reduce the amount of light. Since 19 December they can be seen again at the Musée de Cluny in Paris, (Musée National du Moyen-Age, 6 place Paul Painlevé, F-75005 Paris). The six mille-fleūrs tapestries are – as historians think – referring to the 5 senses, the sixth tapestry showing a sixth sense close to the soul. The unicorn was a symbol of purity. The tapestries are most probably woven in Flanders be-tween 1484 and 1500.
