It formulates its priorities as four strategic success positions (SEP): Computational Science, Life Science and Medical Engineering, Information Science and Entrepreneurial Science. The directions evolved from interdisciplinary research themes defined by the departments. With this first set of themes, ETH Zrich intends to provide contributions in research and teaching for the information society that are as significant as those it delivered for the industrial society. An important precondition for the success of the directions is a new infostructure - the combination of physical and information infrastructure - for the entire ETH community. The project to realize this direction is named ETH World. Slide 4 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20004 ETH Zrich - the facts 330 professors, 6000 staff and 12000 students (2200 of those Ph.D. students) 680000 m2 of space in 170 buildings on two main campuses: ETH Zentrum in the city center of Zrich and ETH Hnggerberg ETH Zrich invested 260000000 Swiss Francs in its physical infrastructure in 1999, more than 25% of its global budget ETH Zrichs web site is the most visited academic site in Switzerland ETH World is the life long provider for alumni, faculty and staff Slide 5 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20005 Departments and Scientific areas of ETH Zrich: Students in the year 2000 Slide 6 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20006 Disciplines: Students and total funding (incl. third party) in the year 2000 Slide 7 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20007 Development of ETH Zrich since 1855: Students Slide 8 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20008 Strategic Priorities in addition to existing priorities: Computational Science Life Sciences and Medical Engineering Information Science Entrepreneurial Science Slide 9 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 20009 SEPs and Projects Computational Science Information Science Life Science and Medical Engineering Entrepreneurial Science Slide 10 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200010 SEPs and Projects Computational Science Information Science Life Science and Medical Engineering Entrepreneurial Science Universitt St. Gallen Universit de la Svizzera Italiana EPF Lausanne Deutsche Universitten Universitt Zrich sterreichische Universitten Amerikanische Universitten Slide 11 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200011 Strategic Planning at ETH Strategic planning at ETH Zrich is a cyclical process every four years. Participants are the ETH departments, the university leadership and the board of the ETH system, the ETH-Rat. Each partner of this process receives input from the others. The final product is the Strategic Plan of the ETH-Rat and the Mehrjahresplan (four year plan) of the ETH for the same period. The Mehrjahresplan is binding, as all participants have agreed on its content. Both the Strategic plan and the Mehrjahresplan form the framework for the yearly "Leistungsvereinbarungen" between the ETH-Rat and the ETH and a four year "Leistungsauftrag" from the government to the ETH-Rat. The goal is to renovate and improve the buildings for high-tech teaching and learning and at the same time to allow the public access to the collections of general interest located in those buildings. From the outside, the university mile will appear as a unit of higher education and its beneficial results to the city in terms of communication and collaboration Slide 15 Bereich Planung GS MS Innenhof CHN Eingangshof CAB Eingangshof HGExample: Lichthof UniZ ETHZ Zentrum Slide 16 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200016 ETH Campus ETH Campus describes the completion of a high-tech environment in a recreational area outside Zrich. After the completion of a new 81'000 m 2 chemistry and material science building in 2005, half of ETHs 12'000 students will be working on the new campus. It is a leading facility in chemistry, material sciences, biotechnology, high energy physics and building sciences. Collaboration with ETH Zentrum is crucial. It benefits from and builds on the existence of (augments) the two physical campuses. It supports distance research, distance teaching and distance learning, but its goal is not to turn ETH Zrich into a Fernuniversitt. It provides the framework for the creation of a new university model. In its defined context, it will enable internal and ETH external students and researchers to participate in all relevant activities at ETH Zrich. Slide 20 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200020 ETH World Rationale The rationale behind ETH World is to strengthen the position of ETH and the ETH community in the competitive global research and education area. The most prominent features of ETH World are: An infostructure allowing the integration of research, learning and teaching, and services. A third and virtual Campus in the sense that virtual elements complement and augment the physical infrastructure of ETH A necessary environment to strengthen the existing disciplines A necessary environment to make ETH Zrich an attractive campus in the information age and to encourage interconnection rather than isolation through project based learning and research A precondition for the successful development of the strategic directions of Computational Sciences, Life Sciences and Medical Engineering, Information Sciences and Entrepreneurial Sciences Slide 21 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200021 Bereich Planung GS MS Available 24 hours, 365 days International Cooperation (Credits) Newest generation education: structured and open learning ETHZ World Teaching Distance Learning Slide 22 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200022 Bereich Planung GS MS World wide participation in ETH practica World wide participation in ETH research Highest Performance Simulation at ETH Zrich Global availability of results to those who have access rights ETH World Research Distance Investigation Slide 23 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200023 Bereich Planung GS MS Planning, design and implementation of new teaching and research methods Development of new teaching and research areas Development of new working environments ETH World Design Leadership in Planning Slide 24 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200024 Bereich Planung GS MS Planning of infrastructure is no longer restricted to physical structures Augmentation of physical teaching and research environments with virtual environments Less use of physical space, but highest quality in architecture, technology and ergonomics Information technology as bridge between the physical and the virtual world ETH World Space Physical and virtual working environments Slide 25 ETH Zrich Planung und Logistik Innovation and Sustainability, Karlsruhe, October 18-19, 200025 ETH World - Definition ETH World is an infostructure project to strengthen research, teaching, learning, and services through improved access and collaboration. It is an augmentation to the established disciplines, activities and physical buildings that ETH Zrich is known for. It is part of ETH Zrich and therefore integrated into its academic planning, infrastructure, and financing processes. It is open to contributions from the outside and integrated in its national and international context. It is an infrastructure project that will also help to reduce long-term facility costs through reduced traffic between the physical locations of ETH and will lead to a vastly improved use of existing facilities. The funding does and will therefore primarily originate from the infrastructure budget of the university. The project is evaluated each year and the funding allocated accordingly. After 3 years, there will be a major review. After 6 years, the project will either end or become an integral part of ETH's organization.
