Program NoteIt is my task as a composer not to presume from the start that I know what the music is supposed to be; my job is to listen, and to follow the impulse that comes through me as faithfully as I can. What came out in this case are four deeply meditative
songs. A!er some re"ection I can say that this music is about the need to stop and simply to be; to stop thinking, stop plan-ning, stop worrying, stop presuming to know how we are sup-posed to act in the world. Life as we are doing it on this planet has begun to look suicidal. #ere has to be a di$erent path.
I was given images of widespread su$ering and destruction. #is music is about the transformation of su$ering. I have no illusion that a single piece of mine will end world su$ering, but it opens the possibility of real peace in me as an individual. #ere is not path to world peace; peace is the path, and it begins inside each person.

Program ListingEternal Garden: Four Songs David Maslanka (b. 1943)
for Clarinet and Piano (2003) I. Lamentation II. On Chestnut Hill * III. Elegy: August 6, 1945 IV. Eternal Garden
* On Chestnut Hill was originally composed in 1989 for cho-rus, clarinet, and vibraphone as part of a set of six songs on poems by Richard Beale, under the title A Litany for Courage and the Seasons.
On Chestnut Hill I lean against the wind.I walk among the grass and the Solomons SealAnd watch the yellow moon begin its rise.I lie where the deer have lain, and ask the skiesImpossible questions: is this phantom realWho made both night and day?Is it wise to wish the night away?
August 6, 1945: the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
