President’s MessageSheila Groves, Eta State NC President

Our Delta Kappa Gamma Founders were forward thinking. They understood the importance of women

supporting women if they were to advance in positions of leadership. They created an organization that would champion and advance women in professional and personal endeavors. After 88 years, this vision remains the same. Our Society continues to recruit the best and the brightest women educators and offer opportunities to build leadership skills.

Delta Kappa Gamma provides a unique opportunity for the collaboration of four generations of women. Young members work with and learn from outstanding women who have influenced education for more than 50 years. These women model best practices, share experiences and encourage others to pursue their passion. New members can become actively engaged immediately, sharing their talents and taking part in decision making. DKG provides a safe environment for women to practice new leadership skills, build confidence, and take a risk. The blending of diverse talents and experiences leads to respect and team building. It provides a safety net for articulating multiple points of view. It teaches tolerance and strengthens our willingness to accept change. It brings us together to celebrate accomplishments and strive for more. It challenges us to be ready for leadership roles when opportunity knocks.

North Carolina is growing women leaders, keeping our Society strong and moving forward. DKG events bring women together to encourage, support, and influence leadership in our schools and communities. Our Eta State NC Convention offers many opportunities to share thoughts and explore creative ideas with other women who want to make a difference. The summer Leadership Development Seminar is a weekend learning experience designed to identify individual strengths and provide activities that allow women to explore their leadership potential. The Southeast Regional Conference presents another opportunity to collaborate with women from 11 southeastern states and visitors from across the US.

Women working together are a powerful force. We create the future - women supporting women, encouraging, challenging, and growing together in the nurturing environment of Delta Kappa Gamma.

He does not hold an education degree or a teaching certificate.

Sunday Brunch Guest Speaker

Attendees at the 2017 Eta State NC Convention Sunday

Brunch are in for a treat! They will be entertained by Ann Ipock, an award-winning Southern author, speaker and humorist who speaks about the joys and challenges of Southern women. She grew up in eastern North Carolina and has lived in eastern South Carolina.

Hope Harbor Home is 2017 Convention Project

For more than thirty years, Hope Har-bor Home has operated Brunswick

County’s only program offering around the clock response to victims of domestic violence and their children. The shelter is open and staffed 24 hours a day every day of every year, during which women and children are provided refuge from the imminent threat of further family violence. Hope Harbor provides advocacy services to more than 1,000 victims and prevention/ edu-cation to more than 5,000 annually.• They offer an around the clock, fully staffed safe

shelter and crisis hotline, support groups, victim ad-vocacy, meals, clothing, transportation and personal needs to victims.

• They operate a victim advocacy office in the Bruns-wick County Courthouse with the goal of ensuring that domestic violence survivors understand and have access to all legal protections available to them.

• They employ a full time Community Educator who makes presentations to in Brunswick County schools. They conduct professional training to law enforce-ment officials and others about domestic violence.

• They employ a full time Hispanic Victim Advocate who is fully bilingual and bicultural and who has been on our staff for more than ten years.

• Their Victim Advocacy Team collaborates with pub-lic and private human service providers throughout Brunswick County and the Cape Fear area to connect domestic violence victims and their children with essential services including housing, medical care, education, employment, and counseling.

• They also have a weekly Victims’ Empowerment Support Group during which the women learn about the dynamics of domestic violence, its effect on their children, and how they can rebuild their lives after the trauma they have experienced.

As the demand for Hope Harbor’s help increases, so does their reliance on the generosity of those who care. They operate 3 Hope Chest Thrift/ Outreach stores to raise money for their programs and to provide a source of goods for the victims they help. However, they also rely on government grants and funding which have been drastically reduced. It is through the help of organiza-tions such as ours that Hope Harbor will be able to con-tinue their work in the Cape Fear area. Eta State NC members can support Hope Harbor through donations of gift cards, monetary contributions, and items from their “wish list” posted on the state web-site. Please consider bringing a donation when you come to Wilmington in April. If you are unable to attend the convention, you may send your donations with someone from your chapter. Each gift no matter how small can have a significant impact.

Career Reflection by Mu Chapter Member Published on Education Post

Mu Chapter member Ann Davis is a French Teacher and Chair of the

World Languages Department at Rocky Mount High School. Twenty years ago, she won a prestigious national honor, the Milken Educator Award, the so-

called “Oscar of Teaching” as described by Teacher Magazine. This award recognizes top educators across the country with a $25,000 unrestricted prize and with opportunities for career advancement. The Foundation

describes the award on their website: “Milken Educator Awards target early-to-mid career education professionals for their already impressive achievements and, more significantly, for the promise of what they will accomplish in the future.”

2017 will mark the 30th anniversary of these awards, and the Milken Family Foundation has been preparing to celebrate this milestone. They decided to highlight MEA recipients from the earliest years in order to celebrate the positive impact of the awards and discovered that Ann still remarkably expressed a passion for being in the classroom with students. As a result, Ann’s thoughts about her teaching journey were shared by MFF with Education Post, an online forum for discussions about the profession. In a three-part blog series published online, Ann reflects on the three phases of her career and the influences that encouraged her to pursue teaching and inspire excellence among even her most vulnerable students.

Ann taught at the elementary and middle school levels before moving to Rocky Mount High. She holds NC licenses in Grades K-6, AIG K-12, French K-12, and English 9-12. She was Nash-Rocky Mount Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 1996, was honored by the NC Association of Compensatory Educators Teacher of the Year for her outstanding “commitment to excel-lence, dedication and leadership to the staff, students and parents of Baskerville Elementary” in 1997, and earned National Board Certification in 1998. Alpha Iota Officer Receives Grants to Complete Doctoral Degree

Rebecca Ensley, recording secretary for Alpha Iota

Chapter, and principal at Jack-son County Early College is in her second year as a doctoral candidate in the Educational Leadership Doctorate program at Western Carolina University. In the fall, Rebecca represented her school in Durham as they were recognized for their 100% graduation rate for 2015-16 school year.

Here are some of the grants she has recently received to assist with her studies. Morrill Family Fund for Research in Education ($4000.00 grant) promotes desirable research relating to the improvement of teach-ing at any educational level. Rebecca also received the Dixie and Miles McGinty Scholarship for 2016-17. This

This year’s Annual Christmas Auction was an excellent reason for celebration! Thank you to all

of our amazing Alpha Iota members for the generous donations and purchases while providing quite an entertaining fun-filled morning. Suzi Cabe reports that since she has been keeping a record of our auction proceeds, this year was our most successful to date toward our grant-in-aid scholarships. Our final total is $3,236!

scholarship was established in 2009 by Dixie’s parents in memory of Dixie and Miles. It is awarded to an outstand-ing doctoral student to support research. Dr. McGinty was a professor of Rebecca’s when she was pursuing her MSA at WCU. Being the recipient of this scholarship has a special meaning to Rebecca as she was a student of Dr. McGinty’s the semester she passed away from her battle with cancer. Rebecca is also the recipient of an Intentional Learning Travel Grant to support her atten-dance and presentation at the 2017 Carnegie Summit on Improvement of Education in San Francisco. The focus of the presentation is derived from a chapter Rebecca co-authored with Dr. Robert Crow, Assistant Professor of Educational Research at WCU, on how she utilized Im-provement Science methods and frameworks to empower teachers to lead improvement at Jackson County Early College. This national conference is a three-day event that draws more than one-thousand of the best minds on the vanguard of improving education by applying in-novative approaches to research and development. Alpha Iota is very proud of Rebecca’s research and her dedica-tion to improving education. We wish her an amazing experience as she shares her research at the conference in San Francisco.

Alpha Lambda Provides Funds and Volunteers

In June, North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation awarded The Children & Family Resource Center a

$25,000 Ribbon of Hope grant to expand the Once Upon A Time Volunteer Literacy Program. This program pairs trained volunteers with local preschool classrooms to build early literacy skills in children while modeling new and interactive ways for teachers to read to children. Volunteers will read aloud to small groups of children in full preschool programs in Henderson County once a week. In addition to the modeling by volunteers, books will be given to participating classrooms.

In August, Crystal Williams, The Once Upon a Time Coordinator, presented this volunteer opportunity to members of Alpha Lambda Chapter. Five Alpha Lambda members are now volunteering with The Once Upon a Time Literacy Program.

The efficacy of the program prompted Alpha Lambda to make a monetary donation in addition to providing volunteers. Crystal Williams, the program coordinator, accepted the check at the November meeting of Alpha Lambda.

Alpha Lambda Charter Member Celebrates 99th Birthday

Elizabeth Rogers, initiated on April 1, 1957, into Gamma

Chapter was one of nineteen charter members of Alpha Lambda when it was organized on March 1, 1958. She later served as the fourth president in 1964-66. Elizabeth lives in her own townhouse and was driving until just a few years ago. She delighted the group with her wit and retelling of past days. Some advice to Alpha Lambda members present was to express humor and commonsense in daily living. The upcoming Eta State Convention reminded me of Elizabeth’s traveling with a group of us the last time the Convention was in Wilmington. Elizabeth and I walked to a nearby shopping area while others of the group were at special meetings. She has been an inspiration to all of us while continuing to support Alpha Lambda’s projects.

Elizabeth Rogers - Alpha Lambda charter member celebrates 99th birthday with her encour-agement group – “The Honeycrisps” – at local O’Charley’s Restaurant.
