THE ETA E-NEWS 7

T he Eta Chapter Family Tree, a special project of the Eta Alumni Association, is

an effort to identify the heritage of our Chapter by charting the intersecting relationships between the Big and Little Brothers of all our alumni. As advertised, the Eta Family Tree was unveiled for the first time on April 21st, at our Open House Event. Taking infor-

mation gathered from Alumni Data Sheets, Alumni Renewal documents, and a special form developed to gather the required information, we carefully arranged (and often re-arranged) the hundreds of boxes and lines

that link our Brothers. The final product measured 96” wide and 48” tall and was output directly to one continuous sheet of paper using large-format inkjet technology. The unveiling of “Version 2.0” will be at Home-coming 2012, so be sure to clip the document at right and send it in with your membership/renewal document inside this issue of “The THIRD DEGREE.”

10 THE ETA E-NEWS

By Wayne H. Bethards, Class of 1959 First Vice President Eta Alumni Association

In 2010 the Eta Alumni Association adopted a leg-acy "Rings & Pins Program" developed and pro-posed by Robert G. "Bob" Pemberton, Class of 1958. Under the program Phi Sigma Kappa frater-nity pins, donated by alumni of the Eta Chapter, are awarded to Chapter members for outstanding per-formance.

The past and present officers of the Eta Colony, now the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, were honored in an emotional surprise ceremony at the Chartering Banquet on March 12, 2011. Joe Criscuoli, President of the Eta Alumni Association, introduced the "Rings & Pins Program" and, in a presentation ceremony that many called the high-light of the evening, presided over the initial awards to: Jay Gobeil, pin donated by Robert P. Haines,

H'49, and presented by Wayne Bethards, H'59. Adam Elbaz, pin donated and presented by

Robert G. Pemberton, H'58. Logan Miller, pin donated and presented by

Joseph B. Creegan, H'56. Gavin Bedell, pin donated by Thomas O.

Nichols, H'57; presented by Lary Acker, H'57. Ryan Kief, pin donated by Grady A. Vickers,

Jr., H'55; presented by Todd Hoffman, H'82. Roshan Shah, pin donated by William B.

Binch, H'62, and presented by Peter Della-Croce, H'99.

Mark Matovich, pin donated and presented by Lowell B. Hinchliffe, H'57.

Dom Cercone, pin donated and presented by James E. Kenkel, H'55.

Zach Gorrell, pin donated by Robert A. Mar-gulies, H'54; presented by John Wright, H'82.

Omer Ad, pin donated by Lucian S. Heflin, Jr., H'61, and presented by Lance Billingsley, H'61.

To assure that the program be sustainable over time as a traditional chapter leadership recognition honor, it was necessary to limit the number of an-

nual pin awards to match the expected pace of pin donations. To this end your Alumni Association made the decision that future awards would go to each incoming Chapter President and that the pearl pin would be outfitted with a pearl guard with the president's gavel dangle. Each donated pearl pin set will be accompanied with a bio-graphical sketch prepared by the alumni donor of the pin.

A president's pin set donated by former Eta Chap-ter president Philip E. Burr, H'60, was presented by Joe Criscuoli to incoming chapter president Chris Flood upon his in-duction as president at the Eta Chapter Ritual Meeting on December 12, 2011.

Our current pin inventory will as-sure the continua-tion of this leader-ship recognition honor for the next few years, but new pin dona-tions are essential and very much appreciated. Feel free to clip the form on the left facing page to donate your pin. We look forward to your contin-ued support of this special program! If you have any questions, please feel free to con-tact me by phone at 410-730-2173 or via email at [email protected]

Alumni Notes “I pledged Eta Chapter in the fall of 1950, and it was my entry into a strong brotherhood that has, for me, endured for 62 years. Many of our alumni never knew, or have now forgotten, the fact that our Chapter closed and we sold our fraternity house down on Cal-vert Road as most of our brothers marched off to World War II. That home for Eta Chapter had come into being through the gen-erosity and effort of Phi Sig alums. With the end of the War, Eta Chapter came back to life with a house on College Avenue - again through the generosity and support of our alumni. As our chapter grew and Fraternity Row was created, Eta Chapter moved into #7 Fraternity Row with new furniture for virtually every room. Once again, it was the alumni who carried the day. Now, Eta Chapter has been resurrected and revitalized on campus in #2 Fra-ternity Row through the persever-ance of our alumni as inspired by our valiant Eta Alumni Associa-tion leaders. I was a beneficiary of the efforts and generosity of those Phi Sigs who preceded me and who provided the leadership and resources to provide those houses on College Avenue and #7 Fraternity Row that I enjoyed so much. I gladly am taking my turn in helping the active chapter of today, knowing that I am honor-ing the support of those Phi Sigs who have preceded me and knowing, as well, that those alums who follow me will ensure the continued health and well-

being of something that has meant so much to so many of us for so long. The legacy of Eta Chapter, Phi Sigma Kappa, is a proud one that deserves to en-dure…and with our support and that of those who follow us, endure it will.

- Jim Starnes ‘54 “I can remember how I felt when I discovered that Eta Chapter had been removed from campus and had lost “Our” charter. Poten-tially it meant the end of the insti-tution we have all built and con-tributed to at the University were it not for a small group of indi-viduals serving as the ‘Alumni Association’. It is by becoming a member and supporting their ef-forts that we insure our legacy at the University will be perpetu-ated. It is our Brotherhood, the Alumni Association are just the selfless caretakers of it - and it is incumbent on all past, present and future Members to insure it is maintained and can perform the tasks we expect from it. I gradu-ated at the height of the Vietnam War and went on Active Duty shortly thereafter. I lost track of virtually everyone and was un-able to attend homecomings or Founder’s Days. After being dis-charged I joined corporate Amer-ica and started moving around the country and advancing my career. Periodically I would run into some of the Brother’s but never with any regularity. I promised myself that someday I would at-tend a Homecoming where they

would all be there and we could catch up on the lives we lived and share our experiences during our times as Active Brother’s. More importantly I was determined to stay in touch with them in the fu-ture. Joining the association was quick and a no-brainer - and for the price of admission they had email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses of all my era’s Brothers, they had a web site, they had a colony formed and I could see the way to recon-nect with everyone I had lost track of 40 years earlier.”

- Claude Bogley ‘70 “It is important for our alumni to be part of the Alumni Association because the re-birth of the asso-ciation goes hand in hand with the re-emergence of our chapter at Maryland and on Fraternity Row. A healthy alumni associa-tion and a vital chapter are not mutually exclusive. Rather, the two are interwoven and depend-ent on each other. Our now "young" chapter needs the stabil-ity, guidance, and sense of history that a strong alumni association can provide. The alumni need the chapter to sustain and grow our fraternity, and to add to our rich heritage, both at Maryland and nationally.

THE ETA E-NEWS 23

Congratulations on your recent graduation, and on your recent elevation to members of the 3rd Degree. We welcome you to the largest association of Phi Sig Alumni in the nation. We hope that you will remain members of this group for a long time to come, and we hope that you will want to continue the tradition of leadership started by the Founding Fathers of the new Eta Chapter, and consider taking a leading role in the direction of this association. As you know, we passed a very special resolution granting all Eta graduates a year of membership in our association at no cost. The fact that you are reading this is evidence of our commitment to building a strong relationship to the future of our association. Before too long, it will be time for us to communicate details about our Alumni/Actives Cookout and Homecoming. At this point we want to ask that you complete an Alumni Data Sheet to update us on the best ways to reach you in the near future. Taking a moment to send this information to us will ensure that you do not soon turn up on our “Lost” list. Thanks for your service to the Eta Chapter, and please keep in touch. Damn Proud,

The Executive Committee of the

THE ETA E-NEWS 25

I n just a few months we’ll be gathering together once more to celebrate Homecoming. Only this time, for members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, this event will be more than

an event wrapped around a football game. It truly will be a homecoming. It will be an event to be remembered - a homecoming to remember forever. Because of the dedicated efforts of so many people - Brothers, Friends, and Family Members - the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has achieved what very few thought would be possible just ten years ago: back on campus, a recognized chapter of the Maryland Greek System, a growing active member-ship, a team of learned advisors, a thriving alumni association, a capital campaign poised to meet its goals, and occupying a house on Fraternity Row. It seems fitting at this time, with all the effort that has been put forth to-date and with all that has so far been accomplished, to pause and pose to our-selves a quick question: “Well, what’s next?” Questions, by their very nature, seem easy to pose and fairly quick to spring forth. One feels a burning desire to ask, and one does so. Simple. Quick. Over and done. That’s that. Answers, however, seem to take a bit longer. One wants to appear to have studied the question, and formulated options for review and consideration.

One wants to have a quick answer, for this seems to be some form of measure of one’s worth, value, and/or ability to contribute to the task at hand, that of answering the question. But one also wants to provide the very best answer. Seems like a lot of pressure to put on oneself, but it’s a condition of the human species. We don’t have a quick answer. Sue us. During the coming weeks and months we will be looking to you, our members, to help determine the answer to “Well, what’s next?” For certain, the num-ber of members in our association, and our success in meeting the goals of our capital campaign will, in part, provide some of the answers. We think our third year will be just a great as our last two, and we hope you will share with us your vision, desires, and hopes for our association. Thank you for the votes of confidence you have provided to-date, and for your anticipated and, we hope, continuing support. Damn Proud,

The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa

Renewing your membership for “Year 3” by August 31st is very important. Our membership year runs from July 1st to June 30th, so receiving your “dues” donation early in the membership year gives us the ability to budget for the expenditures of our association, plan terrific events, keep our website online, publish a few small newsletters, and keep our association fiscally strong.

We thank you for your support during the last two years - and promise that this coming year will be filled with the kinds of achievements you’ve come to expect from your alumni association. We

hope you’ll be with us for “Year 3” and that we will hear from you very soon.

By these things We stand.

Damn Proud, The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa

You wouldn’t make him wait, would you?

With a generous gift…

...you help to create a legacy of having helped to put the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa back onto Fraternity Row.

...you help to create a “Castle on the Row,” to create a home you’ll be proud to visit, and an asset that will enable the active chapter to compete for the top new recruits at the University of Maryland.

...you help to create a chapter house where actives, alumni, parents and prospective members walk through the “Six Columns” in front of #2 Fraternity Row and experience the legacy of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity.

It’s time to do more than read about our new chapter house...it’s time to become a part of it. Only one question remains:
