Forest Whitaker stars as the butler with Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson. Cast: Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard, Alan Rickman, Jane Fonda ~ Rovi

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS: 2013 April 8, 2014 @ Noon ~

WAMC Community Room (Up Stairs) or

April 9, 2014 @ 1:00 PM HBH Lower Level Classroom

Rated PG-13; Sustained intense sequences of menace, some violence with bloody images, and for substance use: 133 min.: Writer/Director Paul Greengrass: Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. Cast: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Catherine Keener, Michael Chernus, Corey Johnson ~ Rovi

From Orange County Ronald McDonald House…It is with a sincere and big Thank You that we extend to you and all your wonderful members that collected the pop top tabs. Your participation in our simple yet extremely important fund raiser is greatly appreciated. This is a big benefit for the many families with seriously ill children that we serve here at the Ronald McDonald House. Be sure and know that all house huge jars of the pop tabs are put to good use at the “House that Love Built.” Sincerely, (Volunteer) Lee

National Volunteer Week - April 6-13, 2014 President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. President since Nixon has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. Mayors and Governors). Since then, the original emphasis on celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Every April, charities, hospitals, and communities recognize volunteers and foster a culture of service. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. OC Circle of Friends is a volunteer driven organization whose very existence depends on our volunteers whom we recognize during this entire month of April. Take time to thank the volunteers in your lives.

Not a member of Orange County Circle of Friends (OCCOF)? Why not join today & make new Friends! There are many opportunities for 50+ seniors in Orange County let OCCOF be one of your choices. We are a social senior organization supported by Prime Healthcare Services. Educational and group programs are held at Huntington Beach Hospital and West Anaheim Medical Center as well as various sites around the county. Add to that our wonderful travel program catering to the 50+ traveler. We invite you to read this newsletter and see why being a member of OCCOF is another wonderful senior opportunity. Members you are the best reason for someone to join Orange County Circle of Friends let your family, friends and neighbors know how great we are!!!

When they get there, St. Peter says, “Welcome Ladies, we have only one rule here in heaven, “Never step on the ducks!” So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It’s almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidently steps on one. Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, “Your punishment for stepping on that duck is to spend eternity chained to this man!” The next day, the second woman accidentally steps on a duck and along comes St. Peter, who doesn’t miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. They’re chained together with the same admonishment the first woman got. The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on…tall, long eyelashes, muscular, great body. Without saying a word St. Peter chains them together. The happy woman says, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all eternity?” The guy says, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck!! Come and experience the unforgettable story of RAMONA, celebrating its 91st season, with all the excitement and harsh realities of a bygone California. Located on 160 acres in the southern hills of Hemet, California, the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre is home to RAMONA, the nation's longest running outdoor drama and California's Official Outdoor Play. The story of Ramona began in the late 1800's when Helen Hunt Jackson wrote the book "Century of Dishonor". The Federal Government commissioned her to do a report on the condition of the Indians and she focused on the Southern California tribes, so she wrote RAMONA in 1884. Her book has never gone out of print and she died in 1885 without knowing the enormous impact her book would have. In 1922 the communities of Hemet and San Jacinto commissioned Garnet Holme to write the play based on Mrs. Jackson's book. He selected this property as the perfect location for its natural acoustics and beautiful mountain views. The first play was held in 1923 and since then millions of people have been entertained and educated by the hundreds of cast members and volunteers who are dedicated to bringing this beautiful and poignant love story to life. Enjoy a lunch of BBQ Trip-Tip, ranch style beans, coleslaw, dinner roll, dessert & beverage. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the pre-show entertainment of Fiesta music, colorful dancers and interesting exhibits as you stroll through the courtyard and sample the artisan’s wares. Experience a taste of 1800’s including woodcarving, panning for gold, wool spinning, gunslingers and Mrs. Jackson’s Mercantile for a wide variety of unique gifts and commemorative items. Spring is a lovely time to visit this area when the month of April is characterized by rising daily high temperatures from 67°F to 72°F over the course of the month with some occasional highs and lows. Our reserved, VIP box seats are located at the top in the shaded box seats. (see below) While this area requires climbing 30 steps, there is a railing, and a landing every 9th step for you to rest.
