This steering wheel must be paralleled with the notions developed on the virtuous scale : journey to ROI … we showed previously that analytics was driving us to insights and actions … Analytics is a motor where data is collected, measured on different levels, business to business on operational centers, or business to customer through applications customer oriented. The first use of data is producing insights such as visual decision tools and dashboard. This is the reason why these two notions are making the steering wheel. This steering wheel conduces us toward ROI with an action and outcomes step… First we will see what data we need to collect and where is data available through an Accenture research study on open data available today Then we will make focus on actions driven by assets analytics, an customer centric analytics

Deriving insight from data requires first to study the typologies of Open data

operators, process description

To derive insights from data, Public transport players can rely on internal competencies, thanks to their own production of data or on external competencies through a better leverage of open data. Accenture research made a study on data available on open access: what are the sources of data, what kind of data is available ? Any one can collect data from public transport authorities web site and open data governments web site and it’s what we did, comparing quality and quantity of information available in cities around the world as Paris, NYC, London, Singapore Toronto and Madrid. We sorted data available into four categories, the ones linked to network product , which mean descriptive data : fare, timetable, name of the product, rules of use …. Second category is geographical data such as map, bus stop geocode, streets … Third category we have statistical data : monthly, yearly, day count for passengers, distance travelled … Eventually last category is Real time information instantly delivered every seconds, or minutes sometimes: it can be images from highway traffic camera, real time arrivals, real time traffic incidents or works… Of course all these data are not delivered all modes, so we identified which mode have what kind of data available. For example do we have maps available for bus, bike, subway network everywhere ? Do we have instant stats on bus arrivals, availability of bikes in a station, live traffic images … Some PTA have a specific policy on that subject : Some deliver a lot of statistic information and no Real time date : Paris … Some deliver all kinds of statistics but dedicated to one or two modes: Singapore deliver many statistical data on traffic

TR = 13% of total number ; API = programing interface (generaly refered to as API for Application Programming Interface) is a standard set of classes, methods or functions that serves as interface to provide software services to other software. It is offered by a software library or web service, usually accompanied by a description that specifies how consumer programs can use the features coming from the program provider. 2 API for Paris ! Velib & Transilien

Singapore and London remain the most active, yet we observed a strengthening of the access controls by authentication

Some complementary lessons…

A variable accessibility of the data: portal versus a constellation of web sites.

Access to data

Xls and Pdf are frequently used for statistical data

Wide variety of formats, yet predominance of Shape, XML et CSV

GFTS has a strong presence in NYC and Toronto. It is choice for only some datasets in Madrid and Paris

Format

API 18% of the data are available through an API

60% of real time data are available through an API

Lessons learned to best leverage open data

Create a community Guide developers on how to use the data Make sure Open data is part of the standard practice

Encourage customer applications (eg: journey planners) but also think

about the potential for network management

Dedicate resources to this project
